The Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar - Kwa Bahal) explores the unique and historical vihar (Buddhist monastery) which is situated north of Patan Durabar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Hiranya Barna Mahavihar is one of the 18 main Bahals of Patan. The Sanskrit name of the Bahal is given as “Bhaskerdev Samskarit Hiranyabarna Mahavihar”. The name of the Bahal was given according to the saying that there was a mouse named Hiranyak with eyes sparkling like diamond. This Bahal is located in Kwalkhu Tole, north-west of Mangalbazaar. Built outside the boundary of the palace of Kirat King Patuk this was called Kwathalakhu Bihar. Later it was called Kwatha Bihar then Kwa Bahal. Nowadays the Bahal is popular by the name of the Golden Temple. The Bihar is said to have been constructed by Bhaskerdev of Medieval Era. This Bahal is famous for the Golden Temple inside the Bahal and has been identified as one of the religious centers of the valley. This Bihar is very well known from the name of “The Golden Temple” all over the world and many tourists come to visit this Bihar. There is always a huge gathering of devotees in the month of Shrawan for various Pujass. People come here to fast as well as request for the reading of the Pragyaparmita.
Pragyaparmita of the Golden Temple: Hiranyabarna Mahavihar is not only a religious area but this is the place where religious book (Granthas) of Buddhism is recited. This Bihar is famous for one of the main nine Granthas “Pragyaparmita”. This Grantha was written by a monk named Ananda in B.S. 1282 during the reign of King Abhaya Malla. This Astasahashrika Pragyaparmita is written in golden letters. People believe that this Grantha was kept in this Bihar to protect from evil nature of people. People from various regions come to read this book. From B.S. 1995 this Grantha was kept safe in a box. A separate Guthi has been established for the reading of this religious book. The local people believe that if they ask to carry out the reading of this book once, their every desire will be fulfilled. Nowadays people have to register their names months before for the reading of this book.

Rudra Varna Mahavhiara, or as it is commonly known, Oku Bahal, is one of the historic Buddhist monastery in Patan. It houses some very important historic documents and some beautiful sculptures.

Ruravarna Mahavihar is a 1500 year old Buddhist monastery full of Nepalese art, architecture and archeological fantasies. This is the one of the 15 major monasteries in Lalitpur. The monastry has its own communal family, those who take Buddhism by performing Chudakarma ceremony by the auspicious hands of Dusmahasthabirs(high priests) become the family member.
The monastery is decorated with the wooden, metal, and stone arts. Numerous Deities, religious animals, Chaityas, Dharma Dhatus, tornas and other various crafts are installed inside the Vihar ever since the Vihar was established. Specially the wooden torans of SALABANGIKA YAKSHYANIS are the most remarkable examples of the art of the 13th century and are the point of attraction for the art lovers.
A beautiful Stupa located in the localited just behind the Rudravarna Mahavihar built under the supervision of the great grandson of pundit AVAYA RAJ SHAKYA, pundit JAYAMUNI SHAKYA . The DHARMA DHATU in front of the Chaitya adds beauty and holiness to the spot. A pit with BASUKI NAAG in the north of the Chaitya is worshipped for rainfall.
HISTORY
The monastery was established by Lichhavi king, SIVADEVA in the 6th century at the southeast face of the patan city. Four hundred years later the king of same dynasty, king RUDRADEVA renovated the Vihar. Thus the name of the monastery is kept SIVA DEVA SANSKARIT OMKULI RUDRAVARNA MAHAVIHAR.

Durbar (Central) Square in Patan (Lalitpur), Nepal
Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of the city of Lalitpur in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attraction is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.
The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newar architecture. The square floor is tiled with red bricks. There are many temples and idols in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square built by the Newa People.
The square was heavily damaged by the earthquake in April 2015.
Patan, the oldest of all the three cities of Kathmandu valley. It is the best known for its artistic heritage. It is probably one of the oldest Buddhist City in the world. The city is situated on a plateau across Bagmati River. Another name of Patan, is Lalitpur. The city is surrounded by 4Stupas as 4 corners of Patan, one at each corner of its cardinal points. These stupas are said to have been built by the famous Emperor Ashoka. This is one of the most elegant architectural treasures of which Patan is very proud. About the beauty of Patan, a western lady writer has to say this - Patan means eternity itself and Patan Durbar Square is the spectacular sight of Asia indeed. Really it is full of Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments with bronze gateways, guardian deities and wonderful carvings and many visitors come here to see the these monuments. Patan Durbar square is the famous visiting place. The square is full of ancient places, temples, and shrines noted for their exquisite carvings.
The former royal palace complex is the center of Patan's religious and social life and houses a museum containing an array of bronze statues and religious objects. There are three main courtyards or chowks, so named central Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk in the square. The Sundari Chowk holds in its center a masterpiece of stone architecture, the Royal bath called Tushahity.

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar
Located inside kwabadehul, this three- story golden pagoda of Lokeshwar (lord Buddha) was built in the twelfth century by king Bhaskar Verma. It is famous as the golden temple. Inside the upper story of the pagoda, are the golden images of lord Buddha and a large prayer wheel.

This was specially built for King Siddhi Narasingha malla. His devotion to Lord Krishna as well as the Buddhist God of compassion Karunamaya Lokeshwar is a famous episode in Nepalese history of religion.

This temple of Buddha built interestingly in the Hindu Shikara style- has five golden pinnacles. They are all in a stupa shape very symbolic of five basic elements.

Krishna Temple
The Famous Temple Which was built in the 17th century, the temple of Lord Krishna holds a commanding position in the palace complex of Patan. It is the only temple in Nepal to have 21 shrines and is completely made of stone. Most of the important scenes from the ancient Hindu epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, have been engraved on its friezes.
