It was Built during the reign of the renowned Ahom king, Rudra Singha, there is a set of three temples, located on the northern bank of the Joysagar tank, about five km from the township of Sibsagar. The most famous among these temples is the Joy Dol, also known as the Kesavanarayan Vishnudole. As the name suggests, the temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and His many incarnations. The temple was constructed in the year 1734 and has an octagonal shaped Garbhagriha, which is the most sacred shrine located within the temple.
The Garbhagriha of Joy Dol is decorated by honey-comb designs and lotus medallions and stands adorned by a dome like structure. Just bordering the sanctum is a small brick-like structure, which was originally meant to be the kitchen house or the Bhog-Ghar. The walls of the main temple are beautifully carved with the figures of various Brahmanical divinities and the various forms of Lord Vishnu Himself. The western side of the temple has a square shaped mandapa. This connects to the sanctum, through an antara or vestibule.

The exquisite architectural designs and patterns of the temple are indeed like a feast to the eyes of the beholder and people come from far and wide to appreciate these ancient creations of the Ahom Dynasty. The month of Bhada (as per the Hindu calendar) is very special for this temple. Naam-kirtans and prayers are held throughout the month, to honor Lord Vishnu. This is, in fact, the best month to visit the place.
Interesting History:
Joymoti, or Joymoti Konwari was the wife of Ahom Prince Gadapani and mother of Rudra Singha. During reign of Sulikphaa or Ratnadhwaj Singha, generally mentioned in history as a boy king and couldn't control atrocities in his rule, The most notorious act which occurred during his reign was the mutilation of other Ahom princes. While most of the Ahom princes suffered mutilation, Prince Gadapani, the future king Gadadhar Singha escaped, due to the efforts of his illustrious wife, Joymati Konwari. Failing to trace Prince Gadapani, Sulikphaa’s soldiers brought his wife Joymoti to get information from her. Despite brutal and inhuman torture, the princess never revealed the whereabouts of her husband. After continuous physical torture over 14 days, Joymoti breathed her last on 27 March, AD 1680.Her sacrifice didn’t went in vain,Prince Gadapani became King. Her sacrifice is still remembered through local folklore, people remember her with honour Sati.
Joymoti and Gadapani’s eldest son Rudra Singha had built Joydol at the spot where she was tortured. In honour of the memory of his mother Joymoti, Rudra Singha built the Joysagar Tank in 1697 at Sibsagar. It is believed to be the biggest man-made lake in India. Soti Joymoti Divas, commemoration day of Soti Joymoti, is held annually in Assam on 27 March

Hi friends..
I am Arunjyoti Saikia and today in this video I am going to show you a full video on Sivasagar Tank,Sivasagar Pukhuri,Borpukhuri from Sivasagar,Assam.
Sivasagar, formerly known as Rangpur, was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788. The Ahoms ruled Assam for six centuries, until their kingdom fell to the Burmese in 1819 and their ruling class was all but wiped out.
Sivasagar Tank, also known as Borpukhuri is a large tank in Sivasagar dug by the Ahoms in the 18th century. It is located in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam, India. The tank is located near the Sivasagar Sivadol, a major landmark of the town. The tank is built on an area of 130 acres (52.6 hectares) and is 64 feet (19.5 metres) deep. This large tank was built by Queen Ambika , consort of Shiva Singha, in the year 1734. The water level of the tank never changes which highlights the advanced hydrology of the Ahom period. According to historian Mills, the tank was built in one night.
The tank is an architectural masterpiece made hundred of years ago. One cannot visually understand that it was made in the absence of any technological support. The tank is also one of the oldest structures in Assam.

Sivasagar Sivadol (Assamese: শিৱদৌল - meaning the temple of the Lord Shiva) is a group of structures comprising three Hindu temples of Sivadol, Vishnudol (Assamese: বিষ্ণুদৌল - meaning temple of the Lord Vishnu) and Devidol (Assamese: দেৱীদৌল - meaning temple of the Goddess Durga) shrines, and a museum. These are located on the banks of the Sivasagar (the ocean of the god Shiva) tank, also known as the Borpukhuri tank, in the heart of Sivasagar, in the Indian state of Assam. The tank was constructed between 1731 and 1738 and the temples were built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha (1714–1744). The height of the Sivadol (dol দৌল - means temple in Assamese) is 104 feet (32 m) and the perimeter is 195 feet (59 m) at the base. It is crowned with an 8-foot (2.4 m) high golden-dome.
Sivsagar, present day Sivasagar, was the capital of Ahom kingdom. The Ahoms had migrated from South China in 1228 and established their first capital at Charaideo 28 kilometres (17 mi) from present day Sivsagar in 1253. Initially they were Buddhists, though Hinduism came to prevail It was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom till the British Raj was established in India. The tank was constructed between 1731 and 1738 and the temples were built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha.
The Sivadol or Shiva temple, built in the Shikhara architecture (more specifically Ahom temple architecture), has a central tower which is said to be the tallest Shiva temple tower in India at a height of 104 feet (32 m). The base of the temple measures 195 ft (59 m) in circumference. The temple is built with stone and bricks. Inside the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorium), the Shiva Linga (aniconic symbol of Shiva) is deified, which is in a reverse setting. The Shikhara or Vimana (temple tower), which rises above the sanctum sanctorium, has a four-tiered, 8 feet (2.4 m) mastaka and is crowned by a kalasha made of gold. The tower itself is built with parallel ridges and furrows. The lower part of the tower is flanked by four smaller identical towers, which are known as the angashikaras. The garbagriha, where the main deity is deified in the form of a reversed Shiva linga, is interconnected with an antarala, a small antechamber, which has a roof known as do-chala, which is akin to a typical hut built in Assam. The antarala is also connected to one of the mandapas (outdoor halls). The exterior walls of the temple are embellished with sculptures and floral designs set in Bas-relief.
Some of the unique sculptures set on the outer walls of the temple are of the goddess Durga, which are seen carved with 2 arms, 4 arms, 6 arms, 10 arms and 16 arms. The sixteen armed Durga holding various weapons is a pan-Himalayan theme adopted in plastic arts of Ahom temple architecture. Durga is depicted decimating Mahishasura, the demon king with a buffalo head, by thrusting a spear. She is riding a lion, her mount, which supports her in the fight with the demon. This feature represents the harmonious blend of brahminical Hindu culture with the Shaktismcult which the royalty of Ahom dynasty had adopted as their religious practice throughout their kingdom.
