A Walk Up The Famed Market Street of Rue Cler, Paris
The 7th arrondissement is home to rue Cler, one of the best market streets in Paris. Find a wonderful selection of specialty food stores, pastry shops, butchers, delicatessens, cheese specialists, fishmongers, greengrocers, chocolate shops and cafés. Most of the street is a pedestrian area and still has its original cobblestones. This authentic market street is where the locals go to buy their favorite foods or sit on one of the many café terraces with friends and family and watch the world go by.
Rue Cler in Paris
A visit to the rue Cler in Paris, a pedestrian market street in the Seventh district of Paris that is famous mainly because of Rick Steves, an American travel writer who sings its praises in his travel guides.
There are many market streets in Paris, including streets far more interesting than this one, but this one gets the most press, so I've made a short video about it.

The Perfect Market Street to Call Home in Paris
Heading to Paris? Rue Cler is the perfect, traffic-free market street to call home for a few days. I do almost every year — and it just gets better and better.
Our guidebook ( features lots of hotels and restaurants on Rue Cler, and I’m putting together a guided walk down the street for my free Rick Steves Audio Europe app (ricksteves.com/audioeurope).
I shot this nine-minute blitz as a tool to help write the walk accurately when I get back to the office. While it’s pretty long, I figure some of you might enjoy a quick, ad lib tour down a small lane in a great city. This clip is your chance to take a walk down Rue Cler with me and decide if you want to call this slice of Paris home for a few days.
(This is Day 56 of my 100 Days in Europe series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences across Europe. Still to come: Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at

Rue Cler in Paris (public domain)
This is a public-domain, two-minute visit to the rue Cler. I have a longer, better video of the rue Cler, so this one is obsolete, even though the upload date for this is more recent. However, I've released this one to the public domain, whereas the other one isn't in the public domain.
The longer and more recent video is here:
The Ballet of the Professional Waiters at Cafe Central, Rue Cler, Paris
I filmed this on Christmas Eve. Very few restaurants/cafes/bistros were open in Paris. Those that were open had a long list of reservations. I went to my old stand by on Rue Cler and was delighted to find it open. I was so tired, that I was just going to plant by bottom there all night. Food was good, but it was the waiting staff that blew me away. Being one of the few Cafes open, the place got jammed. I then became hypnotized by the dance of the professional wait staff. The speed, rhythm, coordination of these few fellows kept the evening humming along with such professionalism. I was very impressed...I had to film it. This is not something I normally film.

A Visit to the Rue Montorgueil
This is the rue Montorgueil in Paris, France, a commerce street that has been popular with Parisians for five centuries. Unlike the sleepy rue Cler, so heavily recommended by a certain travel author whom I won't name, the rue Montorgueil is buzzing with activity day and night, and the people there are Parisians, not American tourists.
Some of the businesses on this street have been there for three hundred years. Today the street remains popular and exceedingly trendy. I hope this video will convey some of the charm of the rue Montorgueil.

Rue Cler - Where Parisians Go To Shop
Rue Cler is a largely pedestrian street in Paris' 7th Arrondissement about a half-mile from the Eiffel Tower. If you want to get a feel for how Parisians live and shop this is a great place to visit. Rue Cler is lined with restaurants and filled with shops selling flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, wine and just about anything you'd need. It's a supermarket in the form of a quaint cobble-stoned people and dog friendly street in the heart of Paris.

French women don't get fat. Shopping on Rue Cler, best market street in Paris.
Rue Cler is one of the most authentic market streets in Paris. Situated in the 7th arrondissement, it has the charm of a little village, thanks to its specialty shops. Super cute pedestrian area! The street is lined with cafés, restaurants, boulangeries, possonneries and a variety of different specialty shops. This is where left bank Parisians do their daily shopping, mainly to buy items they need for the day or the next two days. The French pride themselves on their healthy and balanced diet. Despite the invasion of American fast food chains such as Mc Donalds, Kentucky Fired Chicken, Burger King, Starbucks etc. and a youth culture that is more open to Anglo influences, the traditional French eating habits still live on. French love to take their time to eat. Instead of eating over a computer at work, everyone goes out and typically eats a dish with protein and lots of vegetables. This could be in the form of a chicken sandwich loaded with veggies, or fish, salad. Meat and fish are important in the French diet. Unprocessed animal and plant foods contain the vitamins and minerals you need for optimal health. Complete sources of protein and good sources of healthy fats. Nutritionally, meats and fish pack a lot of nutrition for their size and provide vital nutrients like iron, fat-soluble vitamins, omega-3s and more. The French have always stuck to three meals a day and generally don’t do food outside these set meals. Children usually have a small snack or goûter after school in the form of a piece of fruit or a cake, but this is limited to a specific time, and adults generally don’t snack. For the French it's OK to be hungry between these three meal times and it doesn't mean raiding the fridge. Portion size is also significantly smaller. Parisian cafe and restaurants give you smaller portions, but you’ll probably also notice that it fills you uo anyways. Thank you so much for watching. Enjoy!!!

Renting an apartment near rue Cler is one of the great pleasures of living in Paris. Everyday, you can fill your shopping baskets with fresh produce and other goodies for intimate meals in the privacy of your very own home base, or take them for a picnic in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in the nearby Champs de Mars garden. Everything you need and more can be found on rue Cler - it's the perfect area for experiencing the Parisian way of life
Rue Cler is especially convenient for the neighborhood because it is open on Sunday mornings, displaying the finest foods for the French families' Sunday lunch. Many families attend mass at St. Pierre du Gros Caillou on rue de Grenelle, then head to rue Cler for their baguettes, bottle of wine, cuts of meat, cheese and desserts for their traditional Sunday lunch, even selecting their Camembert and St. Felicien to the correct ripeness. You'll hear customers telling the merchants when they plan to eat the cheese, so they are carefully selected: L'Epoisse pour demain s'il vous plait...le chevre c'est pour ce soir (We'll eat the Epoisse tomorrow and the goat's cheese tonight). Get there early on Sundays to beat the crowds
Start at the top of the street, near the Ecole Militaire Metro stop, on the corner of La Motte Piquet and rue Cler. There is a large post office with yellow signs on the corner. But before you start, don't miss the famous gourmet food shop, Lenôtre, just outside the metro on Ave de la Motte Piquet! (described near the bottom of this page). Now start down the left side of Rue Cler, after the Post Office.

Rue Cler: Deux Pour Douze
In our guidebook work, we love to identify a travel challenge and find a fix. For example, there are two problems with hotel breakfasts in Paris: They are overpriced, and they stop you from enjoying a very Parisian experience…breakfast at the corner café. Knowing we had travelers in the Rue Cler area staying at our many recommended neighborhood hotels, we talked a café (Brasserie Aux PTT) on Rue Cler into offering a “deux pour douze” breakfast special to our guidebook readers: two classic Parisian breakfasts for €12. Part of our research chore is checking in to see if special deals like these really work for our readers. And, as you’ll see in this clip, “deux pour douze” is still a winner on Rue Cler.

Paris, France: Window Licking in Paris
Paris is a leader in the fashion world, famous for its high end design. Here, window shopping (known to the French as window licking) in the bountiful boutiques can be a cultural experience. Department stores were invented in Paris, and they are often beautiful monuments to fine living. The Galeries Lafayette, with its belle époque dome, is a classic example.
