Rue Mouffetard is a street in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, France. Situated in the fifth (cinquième) arrondissement of Paris, Rue Mouffetard is one of Paris's oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods. These days the area has many restaurants, shops, and cafés, and a regular open market. It is centered on the Place de la Contrescarpe, at the junction of the rue Mouffetard and the rue de Lacepede. Its southern terminus is at the Square Saint-Médard where there is a permanent open-air market. At its northern terminus, it becomes the rue Descartes at the crossing of the rue Thouin. It is closed to normal motor traffic much of the week, and is predominantly a pedestrian avenue.
The rue Mouffetard runs along a flank of the mont Sainte-Geneviève hill that was called mont Cétarius or mont Cetardus from Roman times; many historians consider Mouffetard to be a derivation of this early name. Over the centuries the rue Mouffetard has appeared as rue Montfétard, Maufetard, Mofetard, Moufetard, Mouflard, Moufetard, Moftard, Mostard, and also rue Saint-Marcel, rue du Faubourg Saint-Marceau (street of the suburb Saint-Marceau) and rue de la Vieille Ville Saint-Marcel (old town Saint-Marcel street).
The origins of this thoroughfare are ancient, dating back to Neolithic times. As with today's rue Galande, rue Lagrange, rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève and rue Descartes, it was a Roman road running from the Roman Rive Gauche city south to Italy. From the Middle Ages a church along this section of roadway became centre of a bourg Saint-Médard (Saint-Médard village), and from 1724 was integrated into Paris as the main artery of the Faubourg Saint Médard.
The Diderot family moved at #6 rue Mouffetard in April 1746, where lived also François-Jacques Guillotte, a police officer who wrote an article (Pont militaire) for the Encyclopédie by Diderot. The area remained relatively unchanged because of its location on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, which protected it from Baron Haussmann's redevelopment during the reign of Napoleon III.

La Rue Mouffetard, village feel within Paris. Eat, drink, shop, repeat.
Reminiscent of the Middle Ages, Rue Mouffetard which provided inspiration to Victor Hugo while he wrote Les Misérables is a charming market street. Rue Mouffetard or La Mouffe, as locals call it, is one of the oldest streets in Paris. The Romans opened it some 2000 years ago. It was a section of the south road that connected Lutetia to Italy. Today it is an ancient chapter of Paris history for the 21st century to marvel and we have to thank Baron Haussmann for keeping the remnant of an old Roman road intact, not including it in the renovation of Paris in the mid 19th century. Rue Mouffetard is full of specialty food shops, all offering top quality products. You can do all of your shopping here. Bread and pastries from the bakers, meat and charcuterie from the butchers, cheese from the fromagerie, fresh fruit and vegetables, chocolate, etc. The street is closed to traffic, adding to the overall pleasure of strolling and stopping at one of its many cafés. You will see countless shops and restaurants as you you walk downhill. When you are at end of the street with the fruit market with a beautiful display of unbelievably delicious looking fresh produce 6:45, hopefully it is lunchtime. La Bourgogne is right across the street...a great authentic Parisian restaurant for a nice Parisian lunch. Enjoy!

A Walk Around Rue Mouffetard & Place de la Contrescarpe, Paris
Place de la Contrescarpe is a road located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.
The Place de la Contrescarpe is located on Rue Mouffetard, at the outlet of Lacépède and Cardinal-Lemoine streets; it is a focal point of the 5th arrondissement, as it is at the centre of the four administrative districts that are Saint-Victor, Jardin-des-Plantes, Val-de-Grâce and Sorbonne.
The square is about forty yards in diameter and has in its centre a median occupied in part by a public fountain.
Now a tourist destination, it has many cafes, most of them recent. Some facades, however, retain the memory of an earlier period.
The old café shop Au Nègre Joyeux was located on the west side of the square — only the sign remains, which is destined to disappear.
It owes its name to the vicinity of the old Rue de la Contrescarpe-Saint-Marcel, currently divided between Blainville Street and Cardinal Lemoine Street, and refers to the counterscarp, the outer slope of the ditch in front of Philippe Auguste's compound.
Opened in 1852, it was formed by the removal of an island of dwellings between the streets of Cardinal-Lemoine, Lacepède and Mouffetard. This islet would be located today, adjacent to the café Les Arts, that is to say at the level of the eastern part of the square.

Shopping for breakfast at Rue Mouffetard in Paris, autumn 2017
The food market on Rue Mouffetard in Paris was a mouthwatering experience for us. We went there every morning to by our breakfast – piece by piece: Bread from the baker, cheese from the cheese shop, sausage from the butcher etc. Afterwards, we sat at a small fountain and watched the daily life go by. The market is quintessential Paris.

Best Crepe in the World - Au P'tit Grec - Rue Mouffetard Paris
Il y a toujours la queue devant ce petit restaurant si sympathique. Évidemment, les crêpes sont excellentes. Bien garnies. La savoyarde m'a beaucoup plu. Très bonne adresse dans une rue si typique.
