The rue Sainte-Catherine, a 1.2 km long pedestrian street, is the main shopping street in Bordeaux, France. This street is one of two main lines running through the historic part of the city. The street has been almost entirely pedestrianized since 1984. It divides the city in two along a north-south axis from Place de la Comédie, where the Grand Théâtre is, to Place de la Victoire where the Theimer Column is.
The northern part of rue Sainte-Catherine is devoted to major French chains and the southern part to shops, restaurants, etc. that are more popular with students. We are proud of the fact that this is the longest shopping street in Europe. It is busy every day, but especially crowded on Saturday. The busiest time is undoubtedly during the clearance sales that take place twice a year, in February and July. Merchants and itinerant traders set up stands all along the street at these times, and people come in droves looking for a bargain.
The entrance to the Galerie Bordelaise is located on the northern side of the street, near the Grand Théâtre. This 18th century gallery will shortly be renovated. There are cafés and small restaurants all up and down the rue Sainte Catherine, so there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy a pleasant break. Buying on-line has its limits, and it's well worth braving the crowd to find exactly what you want. So, my girlfriends and I are putting on our walking shoes on and heading down to rue Sainte Catherine

The rue Sainte-Catherine, a 1.2 km long pedestrian street, is the main shopping street in Bordeaux, France. This street is one of two main lines running through the historic part of the city. It cuts the center following a North-South axis linking the place de la Comédie where the Grand Theatre stands to the Place de la Victoire.
The rue Sainte-Catherine and neighborhoods located to the West are very commercial areas. It became a pedestrian street for most of its length between 1976 and 1977 and then in full in 1984. It is often billed as the longest pedestrian street in Europe. It was completely refurbished between 2000 and 2003 in a project by Jean-Michel Wilmotte.
At the center of the rue Sainte-Catherine you find place Saint-Project (Auvergnat bishop died in 674). The cross intersection was restored in 1977, it was at the centre of a cemetery since 1392. The church was located to the south and its bell tower still remains. The fountain was made around 1715.
At the top of the street is one of the entrances to the Galerie Bordelaise, a shopping mall which opened in 1834. At the junction of the street and the cours Alsace-Lorraine, a bas-relief indicates the presence of two underground rivers that are flowing into the Garonne: the Peugue and Devèze.
The rue Sainte-Catherine is served by Line A of the Tramway de Bordeaux, station Sainte-Catherine, and Line B, stations Grand Théâtre and Victoire.

[4K] Bordeaux (2019) France What to See in 1 Day walking Tour
If you're wondering what to See in 1 Day, join us for this 4k virtual tour of Bordeaux on the Garonne River in southwest France. Experience local life on as if you were there. Do let us know your thoughts and tips below, we always welcome them.
Filmed in April, we start our slow tv walking tour in front of the iconic La Grosse Cloche (Great Bell) on Rue Saint-James just off Cours Victor Hugo.
Rue Saint-James is just one of many streets we'll wander where you'll find great coffee shops, restaurants and independent boutiques.
We enter Place Fernand Lafargue, a popular area for nightlife before turning right onto Rue Sainte-Colombe with it's shaded outdoor bars. Turning up Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges, and then Rue du Palais de l'Ombrière, we discover Place du Palais, site of Porte Cailhau - the historic gate with it's incredible facade.
This impressive arch leads us out onto the Quai Richelieu - and the banks of the Garonne River. Here we see the Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) that connects the East and West sides of the City.
We follow the river, though not as far as the Place de la Bourse and
Le Miroir D'Eau - instead our walk takes us back across the road by the Charles Dickens Pub and along Rue de la Cour des Aides to the
site of Église Saint-Pierre. This church is surrounded by great places to eat, drink and be entertained.
We follow Rue Parlement Saint-Pierre to Place du Parlement with it's much photographed fountain before heading to Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux's mots famous shopping street and often said to be the longest pedestrian street in Europe.
We finish our walk by visiting Place de la Comedie, seeing the Opéra National de Bordeaux on our right, the Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel on our left (Bordeaux's most famous hotel) and seeing Carrousel Palace 1900, the city's colourful merry-go-round attraction on Allées de Tourny.
A slow walk through the city's sights and history has to be first on the list of the free top 10 things to do in Bordeaux France.
