We srarted off our journey from Cabana Coral Reef Resort at around 6:15 in the morning. From Mandapam to access Rameswaram, one must cross the famous Pamban Riad Bridge or Pamban Rail Bridge. Pamban Bridge is the first sea bridge of India. We crossed the Pamban Bridge and entered the Rameswaram Municipality. We had to pay an entry fee of Rs. 100 for our car. We crossed the town and drove towards Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is the southeastern tip of India. A couple of decades back Dhanushkodi was an ordinary fishing village. But a devastating cyclone destroyed the entire village and took several lives.Today it is an abandoned village in Tamil Nadu.
We continued to the end of the road and explored Dhanushkodi Rama Sethu Point which is also known as Rameswaram Rama Sethu Point. We looked far to the horizon to the southeast. We were trying to see Sri Lanka, but we could not. After an hour of exploration we returned. On our way back we stopped at the lost village of Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi. We saw the ruins of Dhanushkodi church and many other buildings including a school.
After the Ghost Village of Rameswaram, we drove back towards Rameswaram and stopped at Kothanda Ramar Temple near Dhanushkodi. Then we also visited Rameswaram Main Temple and many other smaller temples around. In one of the temples they were displaying floating stones. The truth of floating stones in Rameswaram is that they are not stones. What they show as stones are actually corals.
We then went to Dr. Abdul Kalam Memorial and returned via Pamban Bridge to our resort in Mandapam.
My selection of places to visit in Rameswaram are:
1. Dhanushkodi Rama sethu point
2. Dhanushkodi - lost village
3. Kothanda Ramar Temple
4. Rameswaram Temple
5. Rameswaram Agni Theertham
6. Pamban bridge
7. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial
8. Mandapam Fishing Village
9. Mandapam Beach
10. Beaches on the way to Dhanushkodi

Dhanuskodi Ghost Town Road Trip Rameshwaram India *HD*
Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram, TamilNadu, India: Road trip of 8kms towards the tip of India in the Gulf of Mannar, Dhanushkodi. This place has confluence of two seas- Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. A full fledged town was destroyed in 1964 cyclone, since then its been declared as Ghost Town. A very serene, mystic, religious, pristine and beautiful place. A must visit.
1964 Cyclone: On that night (December 22) at 23.55 hours while entering Dhanushkodi railway station, the train No.653, Pamban-Dhanushkodi Passenger, a daily regular service which left Pamban with 110 passengers and 5 railway staff, was only few hundred yards before Dhanushkodi Railway station when it was hit by a massive tidal wave. The whole train was washed away killing all 115 on board. All together over 1800 people died in the cyclonic storm. All dwelling houses and other structures in Dhanushkodi were marooned in the storm . The high tidal waves moved deep onto this island and ruined the entire town. In terms of wind velocity which touched 150 knots (277km per hour) at Vavunia in Northern Sri Lanka on the evening of 22 Dec 1964[5] , the Rameshwaram cyclone is regarded as one of Asia's fiercest cyclone of 20th century.
Dhanushkodi or Danushkodi (Tamil: தனுஷ்கோடி) is a town/village at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India.
Dhanushkodi is situated in the South-East of Pamban. Danushkodi is about 18 miles (29 km) West of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The Dhanushkodi railway line running from Pamban Station was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea.
Hindu scriptures says that at the request of Vibeeshana, brother of Ravan and ally of Ram, Rama broke the Sethu with one end of his bow and hence the name Dhanushkodi, Dhanush meaning Bow and Kodi meaning end. It is also said that Rama marked this spot for Setu with one end of his famous bow. Bath in holy Sethu at the junction of the two seas normally precedes the pilgrimage to Rameswaram. A series of rocks and islets found in a line are shown as remnants of the ancient Setu also called as Rama's Bridge.
It is said that Pilgrimage to Kashi will be completed only after the worship at Rameswaram besides a holy bath in Dhanushkodi at the Confluence of Mahodadhi (Bay of Bengal) and Ratnakara (Indian Ocean).

The Dhanushkodi railway line running from Pamban Station was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea.A cyclonic storm with high velocity winds and high tidal waves hit Dhanushkodi town from 22 December 1964 midnight to 25 December 1964 evening causing heavy damages and destroying the entire town of Dhanushkodi.
Dhanushkodi Life (Ramswaram)
தனுஸ்கோடியில் குடிநீருக்காக மக்கள் படும் அவதி.
HAUNTING YET appealing, deserted but still full of life, eerie but fascinating — Dhanushkodi is full of contradictions. Bow's End (as translated from Tamil) is a sure delight if you have a penchant for impossibly blue seas, pristine white sands and ruins by the shore. Bordered by the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, this semi-ghost town is probably one of the most spectacular stretches in Tamil Nadu.
Breathtaking beauty, a population of less than 500, the nearest telephone about 20 km away, out of reach of mobile signals and the feeling of being in a place which was once alive, now reduced to rubble, makes it a place truly less travelled. And standing at the tip of India is a pretty heady feeling!
The road that leads to the land's end is lined with casuarina and the sea on either side. A ride down this 18 km-long, impeccably straight road leading to the ruins of a township is an exciting experience by itself. Dhanushkodi was a major point of entry to India until 1964, when a cyclone devastated the entire town, washing away the railway track, a steam engine and its carriages, and the entire village.
Our auto driver, who also doubled as our guide for the day, narrates the events that followed the violent cyclone. He points out the rail track that lies half buried in the soil and goes into graphic descriptions of how it had once ferried passengers between Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram. Becoming increasingly mournful, he travels back four decades when a group of students were the lone travellers on the doomed train. The buried railway track is our first glimpse of the land that once flourished. Eerie but fascinating, adding an extra thrill to this road less travelled.
All forms of transport to Dhanushkodi stop at Moonram Chathiram. From here, we hire a vehicle more suited to the sandy terrain (read a smelly van that carries fish) to traverse the mud tracks leading up to the ruins. A 7-km bumpy ride takes us to the actual ruins.
The buildings that braved the fateful day still exist partly buried in the sand and partly weathered by the sea adding a mysterious beauty to the place. A rusted four-pillared structure, possibly a water tank, welcomes us to this lost land. Even though the town was wiped away by the 1964 cyclone, small numbers of temporary settlers live in thatched huts during the fishing season. Our smelly and unsmiling van driver informs us that this is one of the richest fishing belts in India.
Bordering these huts is another roofless shattered building resembling a church. Inside, a pedestal, which could have been the altar, stands intact. You can almost imagine the pews packed with a choral-singing congregation and hear the booming voice of the pastor. We then visit the village post office — now a grand red arch, the rest of it buried in sand. A ruined railway station and a temple lie among the debris. But the shells of the structures sit peacefully in dunes of white sand against a deceivingly calm and sparkling blue sea. Covered with weeds, sunk in sand, corroded by the sea, Dhanushkodi seems to be a living example of the impermanence of life — it's suspended in decay, seeming to thumb its nose at life.
How to get there:
Rail: There are direct trains from Chennai to Rameswaram — Sethu Express and Rameswaram Express. From Rameswaram several buses ply to Dhanushkodi.
Road: There are no straight buses from Chennai. However, there are buses from Madurai to Rameswaram.
Air: Madurai is the nearest airport.
Where to stay: Most hotels offer affordable accommodation, but if you are looking for a package — food, guide, cab, etc. — TTDC is recommended.

In Rameswaram we stayed in Mandapam at Cabana Coral Reef. Cabana Coral Reef offered us a wonderful stay close to the tranquil waters of Bay of Bengal. Cabana Coral reef changed our perception about Rameswaram as a pilgrim spot. The spectacular beach view and the container cottages of the resort that stayed on the sands of Bay of Bengal gave me a thrilling experience.
We started off from the resort on the next day early in the morning. crossing Pamban Bridge we moved on to the southeastern tip of India - Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is popular as the Ghost Town of Rameswaram. The entire story of Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi can be read from our blog foodntravel.in. However, in this video we are sharing our experience at Dhanushkodi, Ram Sethu Point, The Ruins of a Church at the Ghost Village, Rameswaram Temple, Floating Stone Temple - actually they were keeping corals as floating stones, Pamban Bridge, Mandapam Fishing Village, and APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial. Kothandaramar temple was another attraction that we visited on our way back from Dhanushkodi to Rameswaram. While we were driving from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi, we had plans to stop at several other interesting spots but during our return the sun was baking and we didn't wish to fall sick under the scorching sun.

Hello everyone, Welcome to my channel.
In this video we will see Dhanushkodi which is the closest point to Sri Lanka. Only 29 kms away is the Sri Lankan Border. Of course, in between there is Ocean.
On the way first we will visit Kothandaramar Temple and on the way back we will see the ruins of the old church which got washed away in the 1964 cyclone.
Kothandaramar Temple is around 500 to 1000 years old. Main deity here is God Shree Ram. After winning the war with Rawan Shree Ram declared Vibhishan as successor king of Lanka and performed his Rajyabhishek at this place. Except this temple, everything else in this village got washed away in the 1964 cyclone. You get a very beautiful view from the temple terrace.
Road going to Dhanushkodi is extremely beautiful. Sea on both the sides. The sea on the right side is Indian Ocean. Relatively calm and quiet. Bay of Bengal is on the left side. A bit turbulent. Sparkling bubbly waves crashing against the shore. Wind also makes its presence felt with the gusty sound. The Ram Setu built by Vanar army of god Shree Ram probably started here.
There is Ashok Pillar at the car parking area.
On the way back there is an Old Church that got washed away in the 1964 cyclone and now gone to ruins. One can’t control the urge to go to the sea behind the church. Awesome place.
Make sure to visit these places when you go to Rameshwaram.

Dhanushkodi- one of India's southern tip, after which Ram Setu (The bridge built by Vanara Sena and Rama during the historical era of Ramayana) starts all the way to the Sri Lankan Island of Talaimannar
Dhanushkodi to Sri Lanka. Is it possible to go? The answer is there is no Dhanushkodi sea road to Talaimannar. There used to be a steamer service till 1964, after which the cyclone submerged the town
This series takes you to one of India’s southernmost tips very close to Sri Lanka in Tamil Nadu. A land of serene beauty, but also a victim of nature’s untold fury, where a cyclone in 1964 submerged this whole town of Dhanushkodi. But much before the cyclone, the town’s prominence came from the Indian historical epic Ramayana. This series in Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi is about exploring all this and more with Nandu and I observing history and culture.
Rameswaram is considered a very holy place, and is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Lord Rama, post vanquishing Ravana, wanted to absolve himself of any sins from the war. He along with Lakshmana and Sita, decided to build a siva linga at the very spot which today is the tall and imposing Ramanathaswamy Temple. While Rama sent Hanuman to fetch a siva linga from Kailas and Hanuman got delayed, he used Sita’s lingam built from the sands from the shore, which is believed to be the inner sanctum of the temple, while Hanuman’s shiva linga is the entrance to the inner sanctum.

Less known Dhanushkodi Beach. If visit Rameswaram, don't miss this beach.
This beach is a narrow strip of land with Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian Ocean on the other side .Two vast oceans very different from each other in colour and behaviour, one ocean is calm and the other very rough. This is the last and the nearest piece of India to Sri Lanka.
The drive to the beach is absolutely stunning and scenic. En route, one will find the ghost town of Dhanushkodi which was destroyed in the Tsunami cyclone. The ruins of the church, station along with the other ruins makes one wonder that nature is still the strongest. The road with the seas on both side - Bay of Bengal to the left and Indian Ocean on the right offers a mesmerizing view. One sea is rough and green while the other is calm an blue. The beaches are clean. The feeling of jumping from the Bay of Bengal beach to the Indian Ocean bea is heavenly.
This place has great significance in Hinduism and the world. It was viewed from space to show a land bridge was present eons ago. And a story of this is present I the Holy text of Hinduism. It is a picturesque place. It i also where the tsunami hit. A beautiful place that is worth seeing. A must visit if you are in Rameswaram.

According to Hindu mythology, this is the place from where the Hindu god Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from her abductor Ravana. The Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva is located at the centre of the town and is closely associated with Rama.
