Christiansborg Slotskirken - The Royal Palace Chapel - Copenhagen
As seen through the lenses of my old HP Pocket Cam, iPhone, iPad Mini and old Canon Cam
Like the bird Phoenix, Christiansborg Slotskirken rose many times from its own ashes, last time after it burned down in 1992.
Like the bird Phoenix, the Christ himself also rose from his grave to find his throne in Heaven!
Phoenix, that bird from Phoenicia, today's Lebanon!
Inaugurated in 1826, the 1000th anniversary of the introduction of the Christian Faith in Denmark, replacing the 800 years old Medieval Palace Chapel, which was ravaged by the fire of Copenhagen in 1794, and the British Bombardments of Copenhagen in the Napoleonic wars, 1807.
One of those famous Neo Classical buildings, of the 1st half of the 19th C, by architect C.F. Hansen, the same one who designed and stood for, among others, the Court House, Our Lady's Cathedral, the 2nd Christiansborg Palace, in Copenhagen, and other cities. i.a. in Altona, west part of Hamburg, later lost to the Germans in the wars of 1864 and 1871.
C. F. Hansen redesigned the older Chapel in the Neo Classical style, and to the porch, entrance hall, he added a 4 ionians colonnade. The interior is rectangular, the center of which covered by a large and high dome reminiscent of a Roman Rotunda, more likely inspired by Hadrian's Roman Pantheon, Rome, with an oculus, opening to the sky.
Hardly seen from outside, this coffered high dome may represent the sky, or Heaven, with the Oculus representing the Sun, and its rays!
The large windows, more than adding light, contribute to the open and welcoming impressions one gets when entering, and standing inside the Chapel.
The Chapel was saved from the fire that devastated the 2nd Christiansborg Palace in 1884, but was hit by a runaway Festival fire cracker in 1992, and the dome fell down and the interior was near completely ruined.
Miraculously, the angels frieze, at the base of the dome, by sculptor B. Thorvadsen (DA 1770-1844), the 4 relief angels at the 4 penditives, the triangular segments that support the dome, by sculptor H.W.Bissen, (DA 1798-1868), the statues of the 4 Evangelists, and the Cross were saved.
Successfully restored, the Chapel was (re)inaugurated in January 1997 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of H.M. Queen Margrethes reign. It is used for royal funeral decorations (castra doloris) and royal baptisms! The 1st Tuesday in October, a service is held to commemorate the opening of the Danish Parliament!
Besides its function as the royal palace's chapel, it is daily used by students of the Royal Music Conservatory, and public concerts are often held here.
The Niche at the Altar, flanked by 2 Corinthian Pillars, replicated at the entrance wall that frame the Royal balcony, was originally planned to house Bertel Thorvaldsen's Christ sculpture, which now can be seen at Vor Frue Kirke, the Copenhagen Cathedral. Instead a large Cross was erected in its place, also saved from the 1992 fire.
Each of he 4 Evangelists occupies an arched niche at each corner of the nave, the main hall, each with his symbol, likewise represented as an angel, or a winged putto, in a circular medallion, higher up above on the wall.
- Matthew, symbolized by a winged man, or an angel, represents Jesus' human nature. by Sculptor Th. Stein (DA 1829-1901).
- Mark, symbolized by a winged lion – represents Jesus' as a King and his resurrection., by H. Conradsen (DA 1817-1905).
- Luke, symbolized by a winged ox or bull – a figure of sacrifice, service and strength. represents Jesus' sacrifice in His Passion and Crucifixion., by H.E. Freund (DA 1786-1840).
- John, symbolized by an eagle – a figure of the sky, it represents Jesus' Ascension, and Christ's divine nature. by C.C. Peters (DA 1822-1899).
I personally wonder if these evangelists symbols were not inspired by Persian, Babylonian and Egyptian myths, adopted by the Catholic Church to attract more adepts and convert those who stayed loyal to the pagan rites of the time. To name a few:
- the Babylonian LION of Ishtar, or the Persian symbol of power and majesty, also the LION of Zeus, as KING or as the SOLAR sign!.
- the Egyptian Sun God Rah as a Hawk, also the EAGLE, the sacred animal, of Zeus, or any other AIR totem, Lord of the skies, as a symbol of light.
- the Egyptian BULL Apis, as a manifestation of the Pharaoe's heart, courage etc...the sacred or sacrificial BULL of Mithra, or the Persian BULL as the guardian of the gates of Persepolis, or again Zeus as a BULL kidnapping Europa, or the Constellation Taurus.
- the Egyptian messengers and representatives of gods as a man with the wings and the head of a hawk, falcon, Ibis, raven, or vulture, also the winged Greek Hermes and ditto Latin Mercury as Messengers of god.
Re the candelabres, notice the Egyptian Lotus, symbol of re-birth or resurrection and the solar winged (angels) symbols of the Egyptian god Ptah who created the World by speaking his WORD!
Hope you enjoy your visit!

Copenhagen كوبنهاغن | What I Eat #67
I spent a week in Copenhagen in April, and we got to see some fantastic museums, sites and eat some great food -- but I've taken my time putting it up because I wanted the Ramadan vlogs to go up at the right time. Here they are though, and there's another coming next week!
I'll also try to create a 'where to eat/go' guide for the website and I'll link it here when I do.
Places we went on this day:
Christiansborg Palace:
I'd recommend just seeing the Tower (free) and Royal Reception Rooms + The Ruins (paid), I'd skip the rest.
Illum:
Skagen Fiskerestaurant for food, and Original Coffee for coffee, both on the rooftop

(14) Party at Christiansborg Palace
Christiansborg Palace, on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, is the seat of the Folketing (the Danish parliament), the Danish Prime Minister's Office and the Danish Supreme Court. Also, several parts of the palace are used by the monarchy, including the Royal Reception Rooms, the palace chapel and the royal stables.
The present building is the last in a series of successive castles and palaces constructed in the same site since the erection of the first castle in 1167. Beneath the present Christiansborg Palace lie the ruins of Bishop Absalon's Castle and Copenhagen Castle. When the foundations of the present Christiansborg Palace were being cast, workers came across ruins of several buildings and parts of a curtain wall.
The ruins beneath the palace square were excavated in 1917 and a cover was also built over them. The ruins have been open to the public since 1924. The Ruins Exhibition was renovated during the period 1974-77 and has remained more or less untouched since then.
Denmark: Entertainment in the Castle
You never thought that a hall in the castle would be a so serene where kings and queens walk, but here I found a good, I guess, once-in-a-while event situated in the hallway itself.

Destination Denmark
NOVASOL holiday homes in Denmark are furnished in an individual way and offer a special and distinctive holiday experience. Denmark grants you opportunities to go on an interesting city holiday in a NOVASOL apartment or simply a relaxing holiday on the countryside or even a holiday by the beaches where you can de-stress. Everything is possible with a NOVASOL holiday home. The NOVASOL holiday homes offer you the opportunity to spend your holiday in a quiet way where you can forget the stress and worries of your everyday life. Here you, and every other member of your family, has enough space to do whatever he or she wants and is able to enjoy the holiday. The southern coast has many very long sandy beaches and because of this the coast becomes more powerful and fascinating than ever. At the coast in the north there is a spectacular natural highlight, because in this area the stream of the Skagerrak and the stream of the Kattegat crash into each other and this creates an unusual break of waves. On the biggest Island of Denmark, Zealand, is the capital Copenhagen with many attractions such as numerous museums, the Royal Danish Theater, sculptures and buildings made in different eras and architecturally interesting buildings. For example the Castle of Christiansborg or Rosenborg Slot can be visited. Another possibility is to do a picnic in one of the parks where you can experience Copenhagen's lifestyle. Also the night life invites you to go out and enjoy the numerous bars and clubs in and around the city. The Island called Bornholm in the east of Denmark impresses with its rich and varying nature. The coastal lines here with beaches and places to enjoy the view invite you to go hiking or biking. For those who do not fear the fresh water of the Baltic Sea there is possibility to go for a swim. Also cultural aspects can be visited on this special island. The ruins of Hammershus, the Østerlars Church or the amusement park, called Brændesgårdhaven are worth a visit. Another highlight in your holiday might be one of the glass making manufacturers or one of the art galleries. The reason for this high amount of artists on Bornholm is the especially silent atmosphere, the light and the beauty of the landscape that the island houses. Of course there are culinary highlights as well. One of them is the so called Sun of Bornholm. This is a golden-yellow shining smoked herring served with egg yolk. You really should try it because it is delicious. The NOVASOL holiday homes in Denmark can be found all over in several great locations - book yours today. Novasol website:
Koldinghus Castle Kolding Denmark - Museum Review
A Quick Video Tour of Koldinghus Castle, a Danish Royal Castle at Kolding, Jutland, Denmark.
Koldinghus is a Danish royal castle in the town of Kolding on the south central part of the Jutland peninsula. The castle was founded in the 13th century and was expanded since with many functions ranging from fortress, royal residency, ruin, museum, and the location of numerous wartime negotiations.
The castle was originally founded by Christoffer I in 1268 but the oldest remaining part of buildings is the north side facing the castle lake originally built by king Christoffer III (1441–1448). The western side was later built by king Christian I (1448–1481). King Christian III built the south side and the small towers in the courtyard.
Today the restored castle functions as a museum containing collections of furniture from the 16th century to present, Roman and Gothic church culture, older Danish paintings, crafts focused on ceramics and silver and shifting themed exhibitions.

Sights of Copenhagen: Gråbrødretorv
This square with buildings dating back as far as 1730 used to be called Ulfeldts square after the Lord Chancellor Corfitz Ulfeldt. After his treason against his brother-in-law Frederik III, a monument of infamy was raised to him in the middle of the square, and in 1841 the square's name was changed to Gråbrødretorv.
Europe 2013 - 10 Copenhagen
Copenhagen – Sunday 14 July
We had a slow start but then walked for five and a half hours, firstly towards Tivoli Gardens, then along the longest shopping street in the world (Stroget), to the Amalienborg Palace, the Nyhavn harbour, and along the waterfront back to the hotel. The harbour and waterfront are very old but much of it is being renovated/restored, especially along the canal waterfront where pedestrian and bicycle ways are being installed.
Copenhagen – Monday 15 July
Today’s walk was a marathon compared with the previous day, even ‘though we walked a shorter time! Our trek was wider in search of some we missed yesterday (Hans), and some new sights (The Little Mermaid). We caught a taxi from Langelinie to Nyhavn where we took a canal cruise.
The weather was briefly warmer than Sunday reaching 22c, but the breeze picked up.
After returning to Nyhavn, we had an early dinner (fish & chips along with a well-deserved beer) then walked back to the hotel.
The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue depicting a mermaid. Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. It has become a popular target for defacement by vandals and political activists.
The statue sits on a rock in the harbour off Langelinie promenade. It has a height of 1.25 metres (4.1 ft)[1] and weighs 175 kilograms (385 lb).
Copenhagen – Tuesday 16 July
Another walk on this our final day of sightseeing in Copenhagen. We have searched and asked what else we should do and short of a day trip to the country, there is little else. We could have visited some museums rather than passing by, but still we have been very satisfied with our visit to this city. It is a city steeped in history and historic buildings, that is now converting its industrial waterfront for greater use by the community (we haven’t seen anyone playing water volley ball in the four enclosures opposite; we are also curious about what looks like a skate ramp down to a dead-end in the canal side re-development).
Today we walked up to the Royal Library and ducked behind it into the Christiansborg Palace grounds. Admittedly that was the rear entrance, as opposed to the main entry, but visitor friendly signs were distinctly absent. We had the benefit of a map we photographed as we ducked behind the library, so after trying one entrance to the palace, we went looking for the Royal Stables. All was quiet, a sign showed we were in the right place but nothing about opening hours (if any). What’s more the Riding Ground was being dug up. Eventually, we spoke to a worker who informed us that the stables would open at 1330 but all the horses had been sent north. She recommended visiting the Palace and Chapel, and showed us the way.
So we inspected the Royal Reception Rooms but the Parliament only had one guided tour a day in English and the ruins were closed. Very impressive rooms.
We then found our way to the Palace Chapel under the ‘Secret Passage’ (allowing the family to keep dry to/from the chapel).
A coffee in Hojbro Plads then a walk up to Kongens Nytorv (the State Theatre area) for some retail therapy. We returned down Laeerstraede (retail and restaurants; parallel to, but less crowded than Stroget) to Vester Voldgade (more restaurants), past the National Museum, and so back to the hotel.
Another great day in Copenhagen.
