6 a.m. onsen furo; 7 a.m. breakfast. Today is moving to Shingu day. Another 1600-yen cab ride to the train station where I had a 2-hour wait. I should have checked the train schedule. I got to the station just as a train to Shingu came in. Since it took a few minutes to get my ticket and climb over to the next track over, I missed that one! Hence the long wait. Lots of Panda related material around, I’m not sure why. When trains leave, the station workers put on a panda head glove on and wave the panda to departing trains! Wish I thought fast enough to get a video of that. I snoozed, I “loozed”. Kekekeke : ) Finally, the next train came and I had a nice 90+ minute train ride to Shingu. I have gone from the western shores of the Kii peninsular, Shirahama, to the eastern shores, Shingu. Lots of great scenery along the way as well as the regular common city/town and forest sights which I left in the video. I was going to take them out but I figure I’d give y’all the real picture of this train ride. That is, there is this mixture of regular sights and nice sceneries. There are three famous Shrines in this eastern area. The Hayatama Taisha, Nachi Taisha and Hongu Taisha shrines. These shrines have long histories and have been mentioned going back to Japanese mythological times. Of course the actual buildings we see today have been renovated many times over the years. This whole area has been a heavily trod pilgrimage site with trails connecting the shrines along with shrines/temples in Mount Koya, Ominesan and Yoshino. All the shrines, treasures, trails, etc have been designated part of a UNESCO designated world heritage site. This whole area has plenty scenic spots and onsens as well and it is recommended one rent a car to see the most. I have an international driver’s license but I don’t feel like driving cars with steering on the wrong side of the car on this trip. So I’ll try to get as much as I can on train, foot and bus.
Shingu, on the video map is where Hayatama Taisha and where I picked as my base for my BURA-BURA i.e., exploration activities which is played daily by “ear”. I dropped off my junks at the hotel and since it was too early to check in, went BURA-BURA. After a few minutes, I said to myself, hmmmmmm, everything looks familiar. Yep, I went in a circle and I don’t know where I made that turn. Anyways, good exercise! I finally made it to Hayatama Taisha. Then ran into castle ruins so I had to explore that! I think it was called Tankaku Castle 丹鶴城. Lot’s of stone ankle-twisting steps leading up the where a castle used to be. This castle was leveled during the Meiji restoration. Was about 3 p.m. so I went to the hotel to check in. Checked the internet for a bit then went downstairs in the lobby to what looked like a hotel izakaya for a dinner snack. No English menu, the lady didn’t speak English and I don’t speak much Japanese but I got something ordered. And then called it a day.
