Ozato Gusuku, Nanjo Shi, Okinawa, Japan - April 7, 2019
My GoPro hat cam turned out to be too choppy despite my best efforts to walk slowly and carefully. Next time I go out I'm taking along - and using - the gimbal.
THE STORY:
Shimashi Ozato Gusuku is in the Ozato district of Okinawa.
Designated as an historical site in 2003 by Nanjo City. This castle was built for Lord Shimashi Ozato, the Aji, who controlled the Shimajiri region around the 14th century.
Shimashi Ozato Gusuku's construction, with its back to a cliff and its strong walls, skillfully makes use of the natural landscape.
Ōzato Castle (大里城 Ōzato jō, Okinawan: Ufuzatu Gushiku), officially Shimasoe-Ōzato Castle (島添大里城 Shimasoe-Ōzato jō, Okinawan: Shimashii-Ufuzatu Gushiku),
is a Ryukyuan gusuku built in Nanzan and used until 1429. It, and the village of Ōzato, are named after the Ōzato Dynasty of Nanzan. It is in ruins.
Nanzan was established in 1314 when the Lord of Shimajiri-Ōzato, Ōzato Ofusato, broke away from the chieftain Tamagusuku at Urasoe Castle. The castle was built in
the 14th century West of the farming village of Ōzato, and became the seat of the Aji of Ōzato Magiri. It fell into disuse after the capture of Nanzan Castle in 1429.
During an excavation of the site, Chinese ceramics were found, showing the extensive trade that Nanzan had done with Ming China. In 2012, Ōzato castle became an officially designated historical site on Okinawa Island.
The gusuku is 200 meters east-to-west, and 100 meters north-to-south with an area more than 20,000 sq meters and one of largest in the prefecture.
A true temple built on a platform one step higher and a garden in front It is in a flat configuration. The foundation stone to support the pillar was confirmed from several places by past investigators.
The area of residence of Osato Shimazoe is about 22 meters x 13 meters and it is believed that a reconstruction was carried out several times.
Some of the castle walls remain in various places and an excavation survey has confirmed the foundation that has escaped quarrying.
Excavated artifacts include pottery, Kamuyaki, Chinese ceramics and other Asian-made ceramics, Japanese-made ceramics, ironware, stoneware, and ornaments. Many historical items such as coins, and natural relics have been identified.

Japanese Countryside Shrine - Konpiragu Shrine Fujieda
In the countryside town of Fujieda in Shizuoka Prefecture I visited a hilltop shrine in the shadow of Mt. Fuji. It's a Konpiragu Shrine also known as Kotohira-gu which originates from Shikoku and the main deity is Omononushi-no-Mikoto a patron deity of sailors, travelers, and maritime businessmen. It's a picturesque shrine with interesting legends of the area about giant snakes and glowing Buddhist statues in the sea.
The shrine was built in the late 12th Century at the end of the Heian Period and the beginning of the Kamakura Period. It was burned down during the civil war period of the Sengoku Era in 1578 possibly in the time when Tokugawa Ieyasu was attacking nearby Tanaka Castle which was held by the Takeda clan. The shrine was later rebuilt in 1613.
The shrine sets behind the house of jvloggers Mully&Tomoko of Warmoth Strat and their dog Opie. Thanks to Tomoko for translating the signs!

Panoramic view on Fukuoka city. Fukuoka is a gourmet paradise... providing you're not vegetarian, say travelers on our Fukuoka forum! It's right on Genkai Sea, and the seafood is fresh and abundant. So is Fukuoka-style ramen, which you can find at the city's famous yatai (outdoor stalls) as well as modern restaurants. Walk off your meal at Ohori Park and the nearby Fukuoka Castle ruins.

Japan Trip 2013 Tokyo Edo Castle Stone walls Gardens 130
Edo Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edo Castle (江戸城 Edo-jō), also known as Chiyoda Castle (千代田城 Chiyoda-jō), is a flatland castle that was built in 1457 by Ōta Dōkan. It is located in Chiyoda in Tokyo, then known as Edo, Toshima District, Musashi Province. Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa shogunate here. It was the residence of the shogun and location of the shogunate, and also functioned as the military capital during the Edo period of Japanese history. After the vacation of the shogun and the Meiji Restoration, it became the Tokyo Imperial Palace. Some moats, walls and ramparts of the castle survive to this day. However, the grounds were more extensive during the Edo period, with Tokyo Station and the Marunouchi section of the city lying within the outermost moat. It also encompassed Kitanomaru Park, the Nippon Budokan Hall and other landmarks of the surrounding area.

Japan Trip: Castle Ruins and City Views at Dogo Park, Matsuyama, Japan 17 Moopon
Close to world famous Dogo Onsen, a natural hot springs bath in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture is easy, breezy Dogo Park. Originally the grounds for the Yuzuki Castle, the residence of Shugo Kono, all that remains today are the moats and barely noticeable castle ruins.
However, with Dogo Park being located on a hill with numerous cherry trees, this park is a popular cherry blossom viewing (hanami) spot in the spring. From the observation deck, visitors have great views of Matsuyama Castle, the city and the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can also visit the small museum to learn about the city’s history. A replica of a samurai complex has been constructed here as well

■TripNotes
Spot1:Ruins of Takeda Castle
The ruins of Takeda Castle are located at the peak of Mt. Kojo in the city of Asago. On particularly foggy mornings, the base of the mountain becomes invisible and the castle seems to be floating in air. This mystical scene is where the nickname Castle in the Sky comes from and it has also appeared in the movie Kagemusha directed by Akira Kurosawa.
If you're lucky, you may be able to see the ruins floating in a sea of mist from the Ritsuunkyo viewing deck at the time of sunrise in the months of October and November.
Spot2:Arima Hot Springs
Arima Hot Springs are accessible from Kobe and Osaka city centers and are known as one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan. Experience the scene of traditional wooden buildings lined along the narrow streets and peaceful ambiance of the hot spring town. There are hot springs that you can visit on a day-return trip, but why not stay for a night and have a stroll through the town?
Climb the nearby Mount Rokko with the ropeway and take a nature walk in the sky.
Food:Kobe Beef
Hyogo is where the world-famous Japanese beef brand, Kobe Beef comes from.
Kobe Beef ranks among the top of many Japanese beef brands. Kobe Beef steak is highly recommended. Enjoy the beautifully presented, soft and finely textured meat that melts in your mouth.

Japan Trip: Blessing for a Happy Marriage at Yashima Temple, Yashima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan
【★023★Kagawa Takamatsu Yashima】
Subscribe link :
Located outside Takamatsu city, Kagawa Prefecture, is Yashima (屋島), a flat topped mountain. The Kanji characters for Yashima literally translates to “roof island”, but there is more to this mountain than its shape. Historically Yashima played an important role as the site for the battle between Taira and Minamoto Clans during the Gempei War. In addition, Yashima Temple and the New Yashima Aquarium are sites of interest for visitors.
Visitors can find many areas on Yashima displaying its historic heritage. As mentioned before, in the 12th century, the Taira Clan and Minamoto clan fought here during the Gempei War. The Taira Clan was defeated here and it is said that this battle was the last battle before the Taira Clan’s final destruction. Visitors can find the Chinoike, which literally translates to “blood pond” on Yashima’s summit. It is said that Minamoto Clan members washed their swords here after the victory, turning the lake red with blood. Other monuments and historical displays can be found on the summit.
Also on the summit, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of Takamatsu and the Seto Inland Sea. Special souvenirs can be purchased here. Small clay discs are purchased and thrown off the mountain for good luck. The clay discs symbolize the headpieces the Minamoto warriors threw off after defeating the Taira Clan.
Visitors can also visit the Yashima Temple located near the summit’s parking area. Yashima Temple is number 84 in the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. There are quite a few temple buildings, each reflecting a different era. There is a modern museum here as well, featuring artifacts from Yashima’s history.
Yashima Temple Museum
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: Temple Grounds: Free
Temple Museum: 500 yen
Visitors may wish to visit the New Yashima Aquarium, which is located about 5 minutes on foot away from the summit. Though small, the aquarium does have dolphin and seal shows.
New Yashima Aquarium
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry is 16:30)
Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: 1200 yen
And near the base of the mountain is Shikoku Mura. Shikoku Mura is an open air museum. Traditional indoor artwork is displayed in addition to the outdoor displays of farmhouses, bridges and so on. Pieces are collected from throughout Shikoku to be featured here.

Tokushima Digitized City Art Nights
teamLab: Luminous Forest and River
Dec 16 - Dec 25, 2016
Tokushima-shi center, Tokushima, Japan
Tokushima City is a city of water that is nurtured in the Yoshino River and flows through 138 rivers.
In the castle ruins of Tokushima Castle, in the center of town, there is the Shiroyama primary forest (a forest untouched by human hands). Areas of virgin forest such as this are very rare in Japan. Also located in the central area of town there is a very unusual and vast green belt, with a “dragon king” camphor tree that is 600 years of age, and 80 kinds of wild birds survive in the area.
Taking advantage of Tokushima City's natural beauty, we use light, sound, and digital technology, to transform the river and the forest in the center of the city into a digital art space that changes according to the existence of people.
There rural areas with wonderful geographical characteristics, places of historical interest, and places with unique cultures. Whilst these places are attractive to those with knowledge of them, they can be somewhat obscure for people without prior knowledge. There are aspects to them that may be considered boring for people of the modern age. However, if we can make use of the characteristics of these places, add new value and extend or expand them in some way, we think that such places have the potential to become as attractive as big cities. This is the concept behind the project called Digitized Nature, Digitized City.
・Nature as it is becomes art, the city as it is becomes art.
Digital technologies that react to their surroundings and are networked are non-material, and like light and sound, they have no physical impact. By using digital technologies, nature can be turned into art without destroying nature. Furthermore, cities can be turned into art without changing anything physical, maintaining the infrastructure of the city.
No longer does art need to be exhibited in nature; rather nature itself becomes art.
Similarly art need not be exhibited in the city, but parts of the city itself can become art. We can then expand this concept, with an entire city becoming a huge artistic space without disruption to its normal functions.
teamLab uses digital art to influence the relationships between people in a space. By turning a city into digital art, it may be possible to stimulate positive relationships between people in the city.
徳島ライトシティアートナイト
チームラボ 光る川と光る森
Dec 16 - Dec 25, 2016
Another Day — Another Hill
This morning I took the bus out to Ichinomiya, at the western edge of Tokushima City. I've been to Ichinomiya Shrine and Dainichiji, Temple 13, many times. (They're on opposite sides of the road.) But I'd never before taken the trail up to the ruins of Ichinomiya Castle, which was abandoned 400 years ago when the Shogun declared that there could be only one castle in each province. The local daimyo (feudal ruler) Lord Hachisuka, lived in the newly-completed Tokushima Castle.
The trail up was mostly concrete steps. On top of the ruined tower, there's a grassy area that looks like a fabulous spot for a star party this summer, except for the sometime-rough trail, wild boar in the forest, and the lack of water and toilets on top.
I took a different path down — several paths, actually. It was a steep, rough trail, but with beauty all the way.
