Ruins of the Viljandi Order Castle, Estonia
The stone castle started to appear on the place of the former Estonian stronghold in 1224. The fortress got its final shape and size in the beginning of the 16th century and was one of the distinguished fortresses in Estonia and Latvia. Due to wars between Sweden, Poland and Russia all that is left from the entire order castle today are just a few stone walls.
Already in the beginning of the last century the ruins of the fortress and the park around it turned into a recreational area for the residents of Viljandi. In order to access the castle hills from town a rope bridge was build from the Kaeuvumägi hill over the 13 meters deep trench in 1931. From the ruins you have the most beautiful view over the lake of Viljandi.

Viljandi castle park. Estonia.
The park is located on the slope of the ancient valley and is named after the ruins of the order castle. When the town started to grow in the second half of the 19th century the need for a recreational zone arose. In 1863 the right to use the castle hills was received from the manor. The works were initiated in 1893.
In 1925 the Varese sild (Crow bridge) was finished and connected the town with the park. Interesting to know: · the works where initially carried out by convicts. These were people who were bearing liability in the house of detention for whatever reason and were thereby able to shorten their sentence. A main component of the landscape of the park is the relief, the proximity of a body of water is also important.visitestonia.com

Toolse castle and Rakvere castle, Estonia
Toolse castle ruins and Rakvere castle (fortress), Vihula, Estonia 2001
Toolse castle (German: Tolsburg) was a crusader castle belonging to the Teutonic Order. It was completed in 1471. At one point, it was the northernmost outpost of the Holy Roman Empire. In fact, Estonia was never part of that state.
Rakvere Castle offers many exciting activities for both children and grown-ups! You can try your hand at shooting a bow or a crossbow, sword fight and pike battle, forging, pottery, minting your own castle coins, and many other things. There's an exposition of the castle's history, historical weapons, and a torture chamber.

In the 12th century, a permanent settlement emerged around the stronghold of Viljandi, which also became the economic centre of the ancient Sakala district. In place of the Sakala wooden stronghold a powerful Order Centre was started in 1224. The following year the Grand Master Volquin led the construction of the Viljandi Castle at the site of the former hillfort. The Viljandi (Fellin) castle was one of the largest in the Baltic region. It was a major fortification of the Livonian Order and was appointed a commander from 1248. The fortress was continually rebuilt and modernized over the next two-hundred years.
The town is situated on the north-western shore of Lake Viljandi, which lies in the primeval valley. Green zones cover 27% of the town area. Viljandi is sometimes called the cultural capital of Estonia, partly due to the Viljandi Culture Academy being located there. Viljandi Folk Music Festival a music festival with a focus on European folk music. It is traditionally held in the end of July.
