Dangerous Road to Rumbur Valley - Most dangerous road of Pakistan (Ramboor Valley Chitral)
The last section of the Kalash Valley Road is called Rumbur Valley Road. 4x4 recommended. The road is in dreadful condition and requires strong nerves to negotiate it. It’s certainly breathtaking and it has a fearsome reputation. It still remains an adrenaline-pumping journey and is definitely not for the faint of lungs, heart, or legs. Along the way there are some wooden bridges really scary.
The road is pretty steep, with an elevation gain of 400m, ending up at 1.923m above the sea level. Drive with care as this is a mountain road with hairpin curves and dangerous dropoffs.

Kalash people are the smallest religious as well as the ethnic minority of Pakistan. Their customs and traditions are contradictory to the Islamic and Pakistani culture. The Kalash religion is polytheist faith and the people offer sacrifices for their gods. Their culture is interlinked with their religion and based upon several festivals and celebrations. The people generally do not intermarry or cohabit regions with local Muslims but neither are they hostile towards them. The people are under legal and constitutional protection of the State of Pakistan as a scheduled tribe.

Also, I want to thank Shahid who not only saved my life but also helped others when we were hit by a land sliding and sort of a flood situation. Finally, I want to thank Tajwer Khalid, the CEO of Destida and 25 other people in the bus who made my trip extraordinary.

Dil Dil Pakistan - Rumbur | Chitral | Pakistan
Facebook :
My little Rani, I might be 3 times your age, my house would be somewhere around 800 kms away from your village, my culture is different from yours, our religions are different. Mmmmm …. maybe sometimes it’s good to be different, at least being different breaks that monotony .
Yet our love for Pakistan would always remain the same. Surrounded by the Hindukush, a little isolated, your village has always welcomed me wholeheartedly. Chitral can never be complete without the culture, hospitality, love and generosity of the Kalash. Your valley and your people definitely make Pakistan beautiful.

Chamos festival | Kalash valley | Choimus | Sherin Zada | Chitral | KP | Pakistan
Chawmos (cawmōs, ghona chawmos yat, Khowar chitrimas from cāturmāsyá, CDIAL 4742) is a festival of the Kalash people of Pakistan. It is celebrated for two weeks at winter solstice (Dec. 7-22), at the beginning of the month chawmos mastruk in two weeks.
Chawmos is celebrated without musical instruments in the Rumbur and Bumborate villages but with instruments in Birir village. Chawmos comes after the Kalash finish their fieldwork and store their cheese, fruit, vegetables and grains for the year.
Rituals
The first week of Chawmos (7-14 December) is for the Kalash people only. The Kalash girls select their bridegroom after some rituals. The entire population remains indoors. It is celebrated by feasting until the elders, who sit on a hilltop, watching the sun reaching the orbit, declare the advent of the New Year. Children go up to the mountain, where they divide into boys and girls, and respectively make a big bonfire.
In the second week of Chawmos (15-22 December), the people thank their God by dance and music. This part of festival is public. It involves much music, dancing, and the sacrifice of many goats. It is dedicated to the god Balimain who is believed to visit from the mythical homeland of the Kalash, Tsyam (Tsiyam, tsíam), for the duration of the feast. Food sacrifices are offered at the clans' Jeshtak shrines, dedicated to the ancestors.
At Chawmos, impure and uninitiated persons are not admitted; they must be purified by a waving a fire brand over women and children and by a special fire ritual for men, involving a shaman waving juniper brands over the men. The 'old rules' of the gods (Devalog, dewalōk) are no longer in force, as is typical for year-end and carnival-like rituals. The main Chaumos ritual takes place at a Tok tree, a place called Indra's place, indrunkot, or indréyin. Indrunkot is sometimes believed to belong to Balumain's brother, In(dr), lord of cattle. Ancestors, impersonated by young boys (ōnjeṣṭa 'pure') are worshipped and offered bread; they hold on to each other and form a chain (cf. the Vedic anvārambhaṇa) and snake through the village.
The men must be divided into two parties: the pure ones have to sing the well-honored songs of the past, but the impure sing wild, passionate, and obscene songs, with an altogether different rhythm. This is accompanied by a 'sex change': men dress as women, women as men (Balumain also is partly seen as female and can change between both forms at will).
During the Chawmos prayers, a procession is made to a high plateau outside the village in Balangkuru where the long night of dancing begins. The festivals continue for many more days moving on to different locations within the valleys. It is the most exciting among all the festivals. Girls dance in cold weather and snowfall and boys play various winter games in the festival. Tourists rarely visit the festival due to blockage of roads and heavy snowfall.
TRIP TO KALASH VALLEY | CHITRAL | KPK | PAKISTAN
LOCATION The Kalash valleys of Chitral are located in the southern gorges of the Hindu Kush mountain range in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The valleys share a 380 km border with Afghanistan in the north & west, and the Central Asian states of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kirghizstan are easily accessible from the area. To the east lies Gilgit, from where one can reach China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region along the legendary Karakoram Highway.
ORIGION OF KALASH
There are three theories about the origin of the Kalash. Some historians believe that the Kalash are descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great, while the second group believes that they are indigenous to Asia and came from what is now the Nuristan area of Afghanistan, and according to the third school of thought; the Kalash ancestors migrated to Afghanistan from a distant place in South Asia, which they call “Tsiyam” in their folk songs and epics. However, it is established that the Kalash migrated to Chitral from Afghanistan in the 2nd century B.C.

The Kalasha or Kalash, are a Dardic indigenous people residing in the Chitral District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. They speak the Kalasha language, from the Dardic family of the Indo-Aryan branch. They are considered unique among the peoples of Pakistan. They are also considered to be Pakistan's smallest ethnoreligious community, practising a religion which some scholars characterise as a form of animism, and other academics as a form of ancient Hinduism.
The neighbouring Nuristani people of the adjacent Nuristan (historically known as Kafiristan) province of Afghanistan once practised the faith adhered to by the Kalash. By the late 19th century, much of Nuristan had been converted to Islam, although some evidence has shown the people continued to practice their customs.According to linguist Richard Strand, the people of Chitral apparently adopted the name of the former Kafiristan Kalasha, who at some unknown time extended their influence into Chitral
The culture of the Kalash people is unique and differs in many ways from the many contemporary Islamic ethnic groups surrounding them in modern northwestern Subcontinent. They are polytheists and nature plays a highly significant and spiritual role in their daily life. As part of their religious tradition, sacrifices are offered and festivals held to give thanks for the abundant resources of their three valleys. Kalasha Desh (the three Kalash valleys) is made up of two distinct cultural areas, the valleys of Rumbur and Brumbret forming one, and Birir valley the other; Birir valley being the more traditional of the two.
Northern Pakistan, Kalash People
This video shows the daily life of the Kalash people in Northern Pakistan. It is the first part of a series of tourist videos filmed in N Pakistan in summer 2015. Please share this film.
Our holiday was booked in the UK with Travelpak UK and operated by Karakorum Nature and Discovery Pakistan.
The culture of the Kalash people is unique and differs completely from the various Islamic ethnic groups surrounding them. They are polytheists and nature plays a highly significant and spiritual role in their daily life. As part of their religious tradition, sacrifices are offered and festivals held to give thanks for the abundant resources of their three valleys. Kalasha Desh (the three Kalash valleys) is made up of two distinct cultural areas, the valleys of Rumbur and Brumbret forming one, and Birir valley the other; Birir valley being the most traditional of the two. Kalash mythology and folklore has been wrongly compared to that of ancient Greece, but they are much closer to Indo-Iranian (pre-Zoroastrian Vedic) traditions. Some of the Kalash people claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great's soldiers; however, extensive genetic testing has shown no connection. The Kalash have fascinated anthropologists due to their unique culture.
Northern Pakistan offers:
- extraordinary mountain scenery and landscapes;
- a plethora of cultures;
- surprisingly good food; and
- quality accommodation in Chitral, Skardu, Khaplu, Gilgit and Hunza, sometimes converted from historic palaces and forts.
Above all, the extraordinary friendship and hospitality of the Pakistani people will stay with you for a very long time after your visit.
