Armistice Centenary: Runnymede Air Forces Memorial
On the 11th November 2018 at 11am, 100 years after the armistice was signed ending the First World War, a remembrance event was held at the Runnymede Air Forces Memorial near Egham, Surrey.
We were lucky enough to be there and produced this short film to mark the occasion.

Runnymede Memorial UK trip 1996
To most, this is 10 minutes of boring vacation video. For us, this was a visit to the Runnymede Memorial to see the name of my great-uncle Ralph Ernest Gorman from Williamsburg, PA who died in a battle during WWII somewhere (unknown) over Western Europe. Uncle Ralph was medically disqualified from joining the U.S. military, but strongly wanted to serve in the war, so he went to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was sent to Europe and flew missions over Western Europe for Britain. We believe he flew missions over Germany. Ralph and the crew were presumed lost when his plane did not return from a mission. We do not know where his plane went down...no wreckage was found...and neither was Uncle Ralph. His body was never recovered. Therefore, his name is inscribed at the Runnymede Air Forces Memorial.
The Runnymede Memorial,in Englefield Green, near Egham, Surrey, England is a memorial dedicated to some 20,456 men and women from the British Empire who were lost in operations from World War II. Those recorded have no known grave anywhere in the world, and many were lost without a trace. The name of each of these airmen and airwomen is engraved into the stone walls of the memorial, according to their country and squadron.

Runnymede - The Magna Carta, Air Forces and John F. Kennedy Memorial | European Waterwayss
Runnymede including the Magna Carta Memorial and Magna Carta Island where in 1215, King John was forced to meet the powerful barons and seal the historic document.
We visit the Runnymede Memorial near the river, commemorating the day in 1215 when King John faced the barons and was forced to put his seal on the document which became the very first Bill of Rights and from which our vessel takes its name. This charter established the principle of constitutional monarchy and affirmed the individual's right to justice and liberty. The American Constitution is based on the Magna Carta. To commemorate this the American Bar Association erected a memorial on the hillside overlooking the water meadows in 1957. Nearby on an acre of ground given to the USA by Her Majesty The Queen, a memorial to the memory of President John F. Kennedy was erected in 1965. Also at Runnymede is a memorial erected as a tribute to the men and women of the Air Forces of the British Commonwealth who lost their lives in the Second World War and who have no known grave.

This year we went to Runnymede to see the Air Forces Memorial. It is a lovely, peaceful place to visit and I wanted to see my Australian cousin's name which is engraved on the Australian panel 111. We both found it very moving to see the names of all the airmen who lost their lives in World War II and have no known grave.
If you haven't yet visited and are interested, there is a car park just across the road from the main gate. Suitable for Children and Family viewing

Runnymede and Ankerwycke
On Coopers Hill near Egham in Surrey, adjacent to the Air Forces Memorial there, there is a meeting point of ley alignments coming from the site of Edward III's Round Table building at Windsor Castle, the ancient Wraysbury church which has a circular bank which may be older, the Egham Causeway which may be part of a Roman road and the site of ancient stones, and Ankerwyke Priory ruins across the river. All these lines cross Runnymede Meadow, the traditional site of the sealing of Magna Carta by King John.

River Thames at Runnymede & 1000 years ago
The Thames meanders over time and Runnymede Fields are lower than the current course with the fossil Langham Ponds [called an ox-bow] against Cooper's Hill - probable signing place of Magna Carta in 1215 - winter flooding of the Fields shows the 'old' river route. Worth a summer visit.

SUMMARY
=======
Englefield Green is a large village in northern Surrey, England. It is home to Royal Holloway, University of London, the south eastern corner of Windsor Great Park, borders the town of Egham and more tightly-clustered village of Virginia Water. Its nearest main commercial hubs are Staines-upon-Thames (2.5 miles (4 km)) and Windsor (4 miles (6 km)). The village grew from a hamlet in Egham in the 19th century, when much of it was sold off from the Great Park in the Crown Estate, and is mostly residential. There are pretty gardens as well as some Cycle paths. The village is not bisected by trunk transport infrastructure, however it is connected to the M25 motorway by the Egham bypass of the A30 road, and is centred 1 mile (1.6 km) from Egham railway station.
It takes up two electoral wards of the United Kingdom that include the Magna Carta location of Runnymede (this remains a part of the ancient and reduced Egham ecclesiastical parish), various public greens and woodland at Cooper's Hill.
Runnymede
Runnymede is a water-meadow alongside the River Thames in the English county of Surrey, and just over 20 miles west of central London. It is notable for its association with the sealing of Magna Carta, and as a consequence is, with its adjoining hillside, the site of memorials. Runnymede Borough is named after the area, Runnymede being at its northernmost point.
