Things to do in Russell, Bay of Islands
Russell is a quaint and historic town in the Bay of Islands, with lovely accommodation and an excellent range of restaurants. It is isolated on a narrow peninsula giving it an island ambience.
At the turn of the 19th century Russell then known as Kororareka was the first permanent European settlement and served as a shore station for whalers, a swashbuckling town full of whalers and sealers with a reputation as the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific’. It was renamed Russell in 1844 in honour of the British Colonial Secretary of the day.
Today Russell offers one of the most romantic holiday experiences in the country, with its range of top class restaurants and cafes, abundant fresh local produce and seafood, exquisitely restored historic buildings and excellent galleries.
TOP 3 ATTRACTIONS - Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
As you stroll round, Bay of Islands today, you’re walking back in time. The town’s original street plan and names from 1843 are still intact and feature some of New Zealand’s oldest and most significant historic buildings. Russell Kororareka was developed initially as a shore station for shipping. The European population grew, with a mixture of deserting seamen, runaway convicts, and grog sellers, as well as settlers and traders. The township thus gained a reputation as a lawless and rowdy port and the unflattering nickname “Hell Hole of the Pacific”. Many of the buildings seen in Russell Township now are dated back to these times, and during your stay, you will be able to discover more about the amazing stories that these buildings hold.

13th Jan 2018 - Pataua North to Russell New Zealand
We all went down to the beach in front of Michael and Maxine's shack at Pataua North after breakfast for a quick cast before we left to head North to our next stop over at Russell and the Bay of Islands. On the way we stopped at a nice little Art Gallery - Cafe near Helena Bay with amazing timber furniture, and all sorts of sculpture and arty-farty pieces on display. The drive along the East coast going North is spectacular and well worth it even though the road is so windy you will average well less than 50kph all the way.
We booked into the Russell Top 10 Holiday Park and set up for the next 2 nights. Great facilities and a great view from our elevated camp site...
