Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, England. Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. Bedford Castle was built by Henry I, although it was destroyed in 1224.
Bedford was granted borough status in 1165 and has been represented in Parliament since 1265. It is well known for its large population of Italian descent. Bedford is on the Midland Main Line, with stopping services to London and Brighton operated by Thameslink, and express services to London and the East Midlands operated by East Midlands Trains.
The town of Kempston is adjacent to Bedford, as are the villages of Elstow, Renhold and Ravensden. Wixams is a new town which is being developed to the south of Bedford. Villages in the Borough of Bedford with populations of more than 2,000 as of 2005 were Biddenham, Bromham, Clapham, Elstow, Oakley, Sharnbrook, Shortstown, Wilstead, and Wootton. There are also many smaller villages in the borough. The villages in the borough are popular with commuters to Bedford, and also with people who commute to Milton Keynes, London and towns in Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire.
Transport in Bedford provides links between the town and other parts of England. Road access to the town is provided by the A6 road. Bedford bus station serves the town of Bedford, The bus station is part owned by the Stagecoach in Bedford and Bedford Borough Council and is situated in the town centre on All Hallows just off Greyfriars.

London Russell Square and Hotel Russell- rrz518 visits London April 2013
The square is named after the surname of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford, who developed the family's London landholdings in the 17th and 18th centuries, beginning with Covent Garden (Bedford Street). Russell Square was formed when new streets were laid out by the Duke on the site of the gardens of his former home Bedford House, their London house. Other local street names relating to the Duke of Bedford include Bedford Square, Bedford Place, Bedford Avenue, Bedford Row and Bedford Way; Woburn Square and Woburn Place (from Woburn Abbey); Tavistock Square, Tavistock Place and Tavistock Street (Marquess of Tavistock), and Thornhaugh Street (after a subsidiary title Baron of Thornhaugh). The street lamps around this area carry the Bedford Arms.
The square contained large terraced houses aimed mainly at upper-middle-class families. A number of the original houses survive, especially on the southern and western sides. Those to the west are occupied by the University of London, and there is a blue plaque on one at the north west corner commemorating that T. S. Eliot worked there for many years when he was poetry editor of Faber & Faber: a building now used by the School of Oriental and African Studies (a college of the University of London). Thomas Lawrence had a studio at number 67 (1805--1830). On the eastern side the Hotel Russell, built in 1898 to a design by Charles Fitzroy Doll, dominates (its builders were connected with the company which created RMS Titanic). Other past residents include the famous 19th Century architectural partnership of father and son, Philip and Philip Charles Hardwick who lived at number 60. Since 2004, the two buildings on the southern side, at numbers 46 and 47, have been occupied by the Huron University USA in London (now the London campus of Hult International Business School).
In 1998, the London Mathematical Society moved from rooms in Burlington House to De Morgan House, at 57--58 Russell Square, in order to accommodate staff expansion. A near neighbour, at 52-53 Russell Square, is the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, which moved there in 2009
London walk: Russell Square, Charles Dickens Museum, British Museum, Oxford Street, Covent Garden
London walk from Russell Square to Oxford Street and Covent Garden
Join me for this walk through Bloomsbury – an area of London that Charles Dickens knew well – as we walk from the Charles Dickens Museum, through Russell Square and onto the British Museum, from where we take two separate walks, one to Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street via Great Russell Street and Bedford Square, the other from the British Museum along Shaftesbury Avenue and through Seven Dials to Covent Garden.
This walk divides into four sections:
Part one is Russell Square Underground Station to the Charles Dickens Museum, via Brunswick Square and Great Ormond Street Hospital, circling back to Russell Square Underground Station. 25 minutes circular walk
Part two is Russell Square Station to Russell Square and onto the British Museum. 12 minutes
Part three is the British Museum to Tottenham Court Road avoiding New Oxford Street. 18 minutes
Part four is the British Museum to Covent Garden via Shaftesbury Avenue and Seven Dials. 16 minutes
The Charles Dickens Museum part of the walk is taken from Nicola Perry’s book 33 Walks in London You Shouldn’t Miss.
This walk was requested by Tina Kampouroglou who is bringing a group of students from Athens to London in April and is staying in the Russell Square area.
