Surrounded by the beauty of the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forest, the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway in North Georgia winds through the valleys and the Southern Appalachian Mountains. As you continue south, you’ll find yourself in one of the more unusual towns in our region – Helen, Georgia.
Brasstown Bald - The highest natural point in Georgia
Brasstown Bald is the highest natural point in the state of Georgia. The mountain is known to the native Cherokee people as Enotah.[2] It is named for the former Cherokee village of Brasstown, Georgia, located along the upper Brasstown Creek. Across the North Carolina state line, immediately to its north, is Brasstown, North Carolina, in the Brasstown township of Clay County, North Carolina.
Brasstown Bald is partly in Towns and partly in Union counties, the peak being divided by the county line. The mountain is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian Mountains), and within the borders of the Blue Ridge Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The mountain is mostly made up of soapstone and dunite.
On a clear day, it is possible to see the tall buildings of Atlanta from the summit. The U.S. Forest Service has webcams atop the observation tower, and a RAWS weather station further down the mountain. The public can drive to the top via Georgia state route 180 Spur.

Day Trip to the North Georgia Mtns in 1989
A visit to Brasstown Bald, the highest point in the state of Georgia. From atop the fire lookout tower base there is a 360 degree observation platform that on a clear day you can see quite a bit. But being so close to Smoky Mountain Natl Park, there tends to be frequent haze that will be visible in this video. Also, the camcorder was a full size Magnavox VHS unit that lacks the resolution of today's digital camcorders.
The second half of this video takes us to Dukes Creek Falls off of Hwy 348, the Richard B Russell Scenic Highway. This water fall has two creeks (Dukes Creek and Davis Creek) meeting at two different altitudes and cascading down the rock face. Dukes Creek falls 150 feet down the face while Davis Creek is the lower cascade. This waterfall is near Raven Cliff Scenic Area and Raven Cliff Falls. This video was made before the observation deck was built.
