Veliky Novgorod also known as Novgorod the Great, or Novgorod Veliky, or just Novgorod, is one of the most important historic cities in Russia. It was here, in 862, that Prince Rurik proclaimed the modern Russian state – the Rurik dynasty went on to rule Russia for more than 750 years.
At its peak during the 14th century, it was one of Europe's largest cities. The ancient settlement was a major centre for trade, democracy and the spread of Orthodoxy; its glorious Cathedral of St Sophia is the oldest church in Russia.

Here I present the first part of two sets of photographs taken at the end of the 19th century of one of the oldest shipbuilding companies in Russia, based in the Sormovo district of Nizhny Novgorod. Founded in 1849 the company Nizhny Novgorod Machine Factory and the Volga-Kama towing and imported Shipping as a diversified company responsible for ....the execution of public contracts.....

Starting with the construction of steam vessels with wooden hulls, the factory moved quickly to steamers and barges with iron plating. The demands of the plant were both for military and civilian orders.
In 1908-1913 the production of even more expanded, produced ships, ferries, Russia's first marine diesel tanker convoy for filling oil field Bibi Heybat Bay (near Baku).

The steam locomotive factory in the complex began in 1898 and 28 locomotives were produced, as well as steam engines


Following the Revolution the Factory was renamed Red Sormovo in 1922 and became one of the largest shipbuilding companies in Russia.

Hundreds of Soviet Era cars take to streets

In Russia, classic car enthusiasts have been showing off their painstakingly restored Soviet Era vehicles.
250 GAZ owners from all around world are the proud owners of cars dating from 1932 to 1988.  
STORYLINE:
On parade in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
These GAZ classic cars gleam in the spring sunshine as they are paraded through the town.
They date back as far as 1932  - when the Gorky Automobile Plant was founded here.  
More than 250 owners from around the world have been invited to the Gorky Automobile Plant by GAZ to show off their cars - all lovingly restored and preserved.
GAZ or Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod is Russia's top producer of commercial vehicles, exporting to 40 countries worldwide.
The cars on display here were produced between 1932 and 1988.
Marina Perova has come from Moscow with her 1939 GAZ.
Our car is distinguished because all its parts are original. All that is here is from 1939. The whole car is assembled with the original parts, there is nothing new in it. The vehicle is of good quality and very reliable.
One-offs include the only recreated copy of the Victory-Sport - that won the silver medal in the 1956 Union Championship and more than a dozen cars produced during the first five years of the operation of the GAZ factory.
There's even some GAZ nostalgia for the children. This pedal car was made in 1934 from waste material.
I am fond of collecting pedal cars. This is a very rare machine that has long been considered completely lost. This pedal machine was produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant, it was released in the first half of 1934, and for a long time, we knew about it only from photographs. And in an absolutely random way,  in the remote village, we found it, restored, and now we are participating in the event. says collector, Maxim Nikulin.  
Alexander Aleshin is the proud owner of a 1960's Volga.
It's 1960 end of the year production period. This car was bought originally by myself in Lipetsk in 2008. It was in a pretty good shape, it was painted but it has undergone complete cycle of restoration and most of the work was carried out by myself, he says.
This 1964 Sports Volga GAZ-21 took part in the 2018 vintage rally in Monte Carlo. Its driver, Alexei Vasilyev has been been showing it off.
This is sports steer wheel, here is the hydro booster of steer wheel, gearbox and all the other devises. Instead of the speedometer, we have a tachometer. And here is hydro hand brake that helps on the ice and here we put additional navigation instruments because navigation is the priority.
The GAZ automobile festival took place 25 - 26 May 2019.

This group of talented drone pilots have really put the World (Cup) In Motion, having flown around every stadium in the tournament and taken stunning aerial photographs in the process.

AirPano’s works would be right at home in any modern art museum – the collection of stadium shots including everything from spherical wonders to flat, abstract works.

The group of photographers shot every host city and venue in this year's tournament – 12 stadiums overall, spread over 1,800 miles.

Abandoned nuclear bunkers from Russia's Soviet past

An abandoned nuclear shelter in the Russian city of Nizny Novgorod is a haunting reminder of a cold war era in which the shutters between the Soviets and the world outside were firmly closed.
The city, once called Gorky was completely shut off and was reputed to be one of the Soviet's most protected cities, even Russians had to produce special authorisation to visit, work, or live there.
STORYLINE:
This nuclear shelter is a memory from another generation.
It was not long after the Second World War that relations began to sour between the expanded Soviet Union and western nations.
Suspicion and paranoia on both sides of what became known as the iron curtain led to fear and mistrust which escalated with the further development of nuclear bombs.
In Nizhny Novgorod, which during the cold war was known as Gorky, security was extremely tight.
That's because arms factories and large military installations were concentrated in the area.
In 1958, fears the area could becoming infiltrated by western spies prompted the Communist Party, led by Nikita Khrushchev, to declare Gorky closed.
The decree was in force until collapse of the Soviet Union.
Retired serviceman Igor Deryanin explains: In the event of an emergency, and God forbid nuclear attack, the population must be protected and sheltered. For this reason, there are stockpiles of protective equipment that have been kept in working condition and well preserved. Such shelters always existed, but have been paid little attention due to the economic situation.
Gorky was considered a prime target for US nuclear weapons and the building of these shelters proliferated.
The city became full of these underground shelters for local munitions workers hide in and the exact number of how many were built is still unknown.
Deryanin says: Under the settlement, or factory a few metres deep is a concreted room with a ventilation system with closed entrances and multi-level doors that were hermetically sealed. There should be supplies of water, medicines, protective equipment and even food. The amount depended on size of the contingent. Inside this one around fifty, hundred or even one hundred fifty people would be able to find cover.
This once offered local people a place of safety, now it's abandoned strewn with scattered gas masks, phones and medical kits.
Suits to protect people from hazardous chemicals hang on the wall, along with some posters and photographs which aim to be educational.
But even now the sealed doors are a reliable protection against hostile strangers.
The potential for future use of the shelter is dividing opinions in Russia almost sixty years after it was built.
Some argue that funding should be made available to restore and transform the shelter into the museum of Cold War, but owners of the building are not very keen on the project.
The director of the administration for civil defence and emergency situations in Niznhy Novgorod is now Alexander Simakov.
He says: This is a federal property, it does not belong to the city, and therefore the Federal Agency should make decision what happens to it next.
For retired military men like Deryabin it's a loss of history and he argues it is sad to see the deterioration of nuclear shelters which he believes were once symbols of Soviet strength.
