RUSSIA: MUSEUM CALLED A VODKA LIBRARY OPENS
Russian/Nat
A new brand of tourist is taking Russia by storm this summer as lovers of Russia's national drink pour into the first ever specialist museum of vodka to be opened in the country.
The museum, called a vodka library has opened in the tiny medieval town of Uglich, on the banks of the Volga river.
Authorities hope hordes of vodka lovers will boost the town's flagging tourist industry, famous for its monasteries and the murder of the son of Ivan the Terrible.
All is quiet on the banks of Russia's ancient Volga river.
In Uglich, 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow, time stands still and history is all around.
Boats like the Karl Marx have seen better times, bringing in total around 200-thousand tourists to Uglich every year in Soviet times.
Now the numbers are dwindling to as little as 80-thousand annually in a town of just under 40-thousand.
But history is giving the town a helping hand again.
Passengers disembarking at Uglich can now visit Russia's first ever vodka museum.
As they knock back the region's own brand of vodka, visitors to the library are told how vodka courses through the veins of the ancient town.
Grirgory Smirnov, uncle of the founder of the famous vodka brand, was born and raised in Uglich, opening his first vodka tavern in the town in 1835.
Monks at the local monastery made bread wine from the late seventeenth century.
Now the museum houses around 500 brands of vodka from 60 distilleries spread all over Russia.
The aim, says museum founder Viktor Minyaev, is to teach Russians the pleasure of drinking vodka in a cultured manner after years of little choice and limited supplies during Soviet times.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Just because you have sex doesn't mean you get venereal disease. It's an essential part of human life. If we have such a culture, it doesn't have to lead to illness. It's the same with the cultural consumption of this drink (vodka) - it won't necessarily lead to drunkenness.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Minyaev, museum founder
As drinkers down the shots in the museum, they are watched over by an icon of St Boniface - the patron saint of drinkers they say at the vodka museum.
All over the world religious foundations were often centres of alcohol production.
And Uglich was no exception.
In the Alekseyevsky monastery, monks made bread wine from 1639 say the history books.
The present inhabitants of the now dilapidated monastery are nuns.
They need all the financial help they can get to restore their church - it was turned into an apartment block for several families in the 1920's.
Now, the nuns are thinking of how to make money.
Some people may be making money out of Uglich's alcohol history, but not them says mother superior Miropiya.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I've heard about it (the vodka museum). But I don't think it's something for women, it's men's business. So I don't think we'll be doing anything like that here. We have to do more church things, nearer to the church.
SUPER CAPTION: Mother Superior Miropiya, Alekseyevsky monastery
Back at the vodka museum there are no such qualms.
The sound of clinking glasses is heard all day as tourists like Valery Kostyev from Moscow enjoy what is a unique institution in Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There isn't even anything like this in Moscow. Not everybody wants to visit churches, or old sights. So we need new, modern, unusual things.
SUPER CAPTION: Valery Kostyev, visitor
The churches have stood in Uglich for over six hundred years.
The vodka museum has some catching up to do, but, so far, there is no shortage of visitors looking for a different kind lesson in Russian history.

Our Scenic journey sets sail in Moscow and now lands us in one of Russia's oldest towns Uglich.
Leaving the business of Moscow behind Scenic give you the chance to come and have a look at some of the smaller towns here in Russia.
Where tradition is strong the people are absolutely lovely and if you pay with cash there's some cracker deals.
Yep these are the not-so-secret locations that let you save some money and give you a chance to get to know the locals.
David: “and you love all the tourist boats coming in and all the tourists from around the world coming to visit you?”
Tatiana: “I love all the tourists you see and just we even just happy when we see foreigners and when I hear the words oh I have got what I was looking for you see that is the best”
David: “this is the place to shop”
Uglich is a pretty town, with a pretty dark history this was where the son of the first Russian Tsar was murdered and as you can imagine started a pretty serious uproar, the Church of St Dmitry is his legacy.
They were such hard times back then that even the bell was punished for being rung at the time of his death and it was exiled to Siberia for three centuries.. well I guess it won't do that again.
Just a stone’s throw up the Volga River is the world heritage-listed Yaroslavl; an open-air Museum of Russia's colourful past.
The history that surrounds some of these places you get to visit is absolutely incredible, I mean Yaroslavl has just celebrated its 1000th birthday.
The art frescoes in the Elijah cathedral are some of the best preserved in Russia and get this it's only ever been washed once but somehow it's kept its magic, possibly a bit of divine intervention?
This little town is named after Yaroslavl the wise now he's very educated man that's a given but what he was really smart at is that he married his three daughters of to the French the Norwegian and the Hungarian Kings. Now that is how you make some pretty serious allies..
Allies to protect you and your town for centuries.
While we're cruising between ports Scenic give you the chance to try some of the more traditional crafts like matryoshka dolls and these are meant to be our masterpiece, Billy yours is looking alright
Are you happy with that?
I would be concerned I’m the only woman in this
Not woman
I'll tell you now the matryoshka doll competition is not for the faint-hearted.. too much?
The Scenic Tsar is your home away from home while you’re here in Russia and this boat was specifically designed for this kind of cruising.
This technology you and I wouldn't even understand its luxuriously appointed for the more sophisticated among us.
And your private deck is well.. private.
This is one of the newest vessels in Russia so expect the bes, comfort is everything and you can even check in on the captain to make sure it's smooth sailing all the way to St. Petersburg.
St Petersburg Trevor Shoots Russian Vodka
When in Russia. This is me shooting pure Russian Vodka. It's a shot of 50mls and cost 60 rubbles, about 1euro50 and damn it was good. It's true you don't taste the alcohol!

UPDATE 2015: Shot a few years ago, this video by Don Dulmadge is still a superb way to give you an upfront view of culture, georgeous scenery and excitement you can expect from our Russian Cruises! While we may change vessels - the sights and stunning beauty remain the same!
Check out all the details on our website:
Russia is the largest country in the world, home to 150 million people and spanning 11 time zones. Over a thousand years of culture, history, intrigue, and mystery. Ornate palaces, giant squares, magical fountains, the first man in space, world-renowned literature, art, and music. Since 1991, when Perestroika opened Russia to the world, millions of visitors have poured into Moscow to marvel at the Red Square, the unique onion domes of Saint Basil's Cathedral, and the vast Kremlin grounds adorned with giant bells and cannons. Millions have come to St. Petersburg to view the incomparable wealth of the Hermitage Museum, the grandeur of Pavlovsk and Catherine Palaces, and the magic of Peterhof Fountains, where water is propelled by ingenious design and gravity, not by modern pumps or technology. But Russia is not just Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia is also Goritza, a typical riverside peasant village, where you can break bread with an authentic local family. Russia's Uglich, Yaroslavl, and Kizhi, but most all of all, Russia is its people, old and young alike, who will impress you with their hospitality, humor, and generous spirit, their curiosity, intelligence, and their Slavic duše, or soul.
The ship, refurbished in 2006, holds a maximum of 240 passengers, along with 100 crew members. Her cabins are clean and comfortable, featuring all lower berths, private bathrooms with showers, refrigerators, air conditioning and opening windows. Aboard all our ships, meals are served in our spacious panorama restaurants and night bars, and are complimented with a number of additional feasts and surprises. Blini and caviar tasting, tea parties, and vodka and champagne galore. After a full day of sightseeing, you can rest and relax in one of our elegant lounges, where a talented team of classical musicians, folklore dancers, and our live dance band will entertain you until the wee hours of the morning.
After another day of sightseeing, the time will come to bid St. Petersburg goodbye, as you set sail on your Volga adventure. Enjoy our welcome cocktails and dinner, and then party away as our on-board entertainers enthrall you with their playing, singing, and dancing. Your first stop downstream will be at the delightful green station of Mondraga, where a typical 19th-century Russian village has been recreated. Here, you will see artisans at work and be able to purchase their creations. You will also have a chance to see the unique Vodka Museum, featuring over 2,500 versions of Russia's national drink. Then it's time to enjoy an authentic riverside barbecue with shashlik, wine, and special entertainment.
Kizhi Island, one of the 1,650 island dotting the immense Lake Onega, is reminiscent of a fairy tale. The structures found on the island are authentic examples of traditional Russian wooden architecture from the turn of the century. The most spectacular is the Church of Transfiguration, whose 22 cupolas were constructed by Master Nestor without the use of a single nail. Back on board, it's time to take in one of our many cultural and entertainment activities. Enjoy a lecture on Russian history or Russian arts and souvenirs. Then, sit back and enjoy an on-board concert performed by our fabulous folklore ensemble.
In the typical riverside village of Goritza, you will visit an authentic peasant house, where you will be welcomed and served delicious homemade food. The day will end with another treat, our on-board caviar and champagne party. Founded in 1010 by Prince Yaroslavl the Wise, Yaroslavl is one of Russia's oldest cities. During the Middle Ages, it was a main training center and one of three Golden Ring Cities. Today, the Church of Elijah the Prophet boasts of some of the oldest original icons, dating back as far as the 13th century. It is also home to one of the most renowned a cappella choirs in all of Russia.
The town of Uglich is closely linked to the darker side of Russian history. It is here that the 10-year-old crown Prince Dmitri, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered, which brought Boris Godunov to the throne and turmoil to the country. The day will end with a classic concert, preformed by two of Russia's most renowned classical musicians, who will fill the evening with romance and raw emotion. As you continue sailing towards Moscow, the evening is reserved for our Captain's Gala Dinner, featuring vodka, champagne, and entertainment. Then it's time for some silly fun and laughter at our talent show, where both passengers and staff get to strut their stuff.

Welcome to the space race, it was the nineteen-fifties and the USA and USSR were in battle to become the first to explore the great unknown.. Of course the Russians got there first so the Americans had some catching up to do.
Scenic have landed us in Moscow at ground zero, no trip to Russia would be complete without a little stop off in Space. That's one small step for man.
The cosmonaut museum gives an insight into the incredible feats of the scientists and astronauts who decided to take on the universe.
In this amazing space race of course the true legends were Belka and Strelka because they were the first living things to return from space and of course came back to a rock star reception.. Well not quite but they did get their photo in the paper.
Moscow’s riches don't just lie in her space program and Scenic send you deep inside the infamous Kremlin to a building known as the armory.
Some of the most expensive gifts and jewels in all of Russia are here in this museum and if you don't think the credit card can handle one of these there's always the gift shop.
The Armory's big draw card are some very expensive-looking eggs designed and crafted by the Fabergé family, the imperial eggs were designed for royalty and this is the best collection anywhere in the world.
If all the jewels and riches are getting you in the mood to spend, Tverskaya street is dangerously close.
This was one of the very first streets in the city and has kilometers of retail therapy and cafes to keep you busy.
There is so much to do here in Moscow and thankfully Scenic Tours give you a little bit of downtime, now not enough to get yourself in trouble but just enough to sample some of the local way of life and if you like the best coffee in Moscow come and see my friends at Cyactbe.
Yes the language is a little difficult to pick up but that's half the fun.
I know that you only want to come to Russia if you get to do it in style so with a little help my friends may I introduce the Scenic Tsar.
Patron: “Martini, shaken not stirred”
Waiter: “Excuse me sir I believe that this is yours”
David: “Wow impressive”

Our last stop on our Scenic Tours Russian adventure is here in St. Petersburg and what a city to wrap things up.
There's one man who you are going to fall in love with when you come here and that is Peter the Great.
No it's not because of his incredible architecture or phenomenal monuments, it's because of the vision he had for St. Petersburg
Peter the Great wanted this city to shine like no other and with a soft spot for the European lifestyle he brought elegance to Russia, the canals and grand palaces play a starring role in this masterpiece.
Peter did have a good sense of humor though, he would sit his guests down and unbeknownst to them the fountain would go off.
One of Peter’s finest moments was Peterhof Palace, it's 1,000 hectares of fountains and gardens have been used throughout the ages to impress not only royalty but also Scenic guests.
Imagine having this as your backyard.
Catherine the great as her name suggests was also a mover and shaker in the city's history and enjoyed the finer things.
I think you're gonna be waiting a little while for Catherine's palace to come on the market but to give you an idea of value in here there are pieces of amber that are as rare as most unique diamonds on earth so this room alone is priceless.
Once stolen by the Nazis the famous amber room and the Grand Hall of this residence are just some of your Scenic
highlights here in St. Petersburg.
The exquisite beauty and class of Catherine's Palace can only stretch so far as you could imagine with all the royalty and riches of the 18th century artwork was a highly sought-after possession.
I'm pretty confident saying that the Hermitage is one of the very best museums that you will ever see in your life but if you think there's any chance that you're going to see all 3 million exhibits think again it would take you close to 11 years.
The Hermitage is one of the most prestigious museums in the world you'll be happy to know that they're expanding because the current 10 buildings can’t hold all the incredible works.
St. Petersburg is rich in culture and its European lifestyle but it also knows how to party.
Well this morning when I woke up I didn't think I'd be sitting at one of president Putin's favourite restaurants but hey, its Scenic Tours. Cheers!
That water is very strong.
With a mix of tradition, entertainment and special performances setup exclusively for us, I think even Peter the great would be a very happy man.
This trip has really changed my perspective on this country, I was expecting a highly strung more repressive kind of place but it is simply been the total opposite.
The people are very warm and welcoming and there is so much that you need to checkout so from Russia, Privet.
