Oakham is the county town of Rutland in the East Midlands of England, 25 miles east of Leicester, 28 miles south-east of Nottingham and 23 miles west of Peterborough. Oakham lies to the west of Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. It is in the Vale of Catmose and is built on an incline, varying from 325 ft (99 m) to 400 ft (120 m) above sea level.
Local governance for Oakham is provided for by the single-tier unitary Rutland County Council, of which Oakham is the headquarters. Tourist attractions in Oakham include All Saints' Church and Oakham Castle. Another popular and historic feature is the open-air market held in the town's market square every Wednesday and Saturday (near the ancient octagonal Buttercross with its pyramidal roof and wooden stocks, a Grade I listed building).
The impressive spire of Oakham parish church, built during the 14th century, dominates distant views of the town for several miles in all directions. Restored in 1857–58 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the church is a Grade I listed building. Oakham Castle, in Oakham, Rutland, was constructed between 1180 and 1190 for Walchelin de Ferriers, Lord of the Manor of Oakham. The Castle is known for its collection of massive horseshoes and is also recognised as one of the best examples of domestic Norman architecture in England.
Rutland County Museum is located in Oakham, Rutland, in the old Riding School of the Rutland Fencible Cavalry which was built in 1794-95. The Birmingham to Stansted Airport railway line runs through the town, providing links to Birmingham, Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. Oakham railway station is positioned approximately halfway between Peterborough railway station and Leicester railway station
Oakham is on the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Stamford. On 10 January 2007, the A606 bypass opened diverting traffic from the town centre. The Oakham Canal connected the town to the Melton Mowbray Navigation, the River Soar and the national waterways system between 1802 and 1847.

There was huge public support for the plans. Hundreds people packed into Rutland County Museum the meeting of the Council’s development control committee was moved from the council offices because so many people had turned up.
Many had to stand amongst the farming exhibits and some even stood upstairs.
The public were very noisy, cheers and applause and annoyance that Tory Cllr Edward Baines appeared to be scared to use a microphone so people could hear him. At one stage he advised he would adjourn the meeting if the public did not keep quiet. If he had I think there would have been a riot.
The mayor of Oakham Jayne Woodcock gave a deputation on behalf of Oakham Town Council or
should I say a party political broadcast for a town council that certainly did not bare any resemblance to the Oakham Town Council I know.
Aldi’s property director for the Athestone region Ciaran Aldridge gave deputation ahead of the debate, which lasted more than an hour, urging councillors to vote in favour of the store, which Aldi claim will create up to 40 jobs. as Aldi's rep he also said they were agreeing a £100,000 developer contribution to help improve Oakham Town Centre and then continued with a commercial for the company. He was a hit with the ladies and probably a few closeted men, but fortunate for him only a few ladies offered kisses at the end.
The Planning officers’ recommended refusal. Cllr Cross the Tory Councils clown or fool, proposed members of the public should applaud council staff for their hard work. Nothing became of that
daft proposal.
Councillors also heard that there had been hundreds of letters and e-mails of support from members of the community, as well as two petitions set up in favour of the plans both containing 1000's of signature, A couple Facebook campaigns also attracted hundreds of supporters.
Members of the development control committee decided to approve the plans with 10 members voting in favour of approving the plans and one abstention. Chair of the committee Tory Cllr Edward Baines would have liked to vote against, but instead abstained describing himself as a coward

Oakham, which lies between Leicester and Peterborough (or to put it more locally, between Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and Stamford, Lincolnshire), is the county town of Rutland, the smallest county of England. The Royal Charter stipulates that only on Wednesdays and Saturdays the vendors are allowed to put their produces and products on Oakham Market, which is a centuries-old tradition.

Normanton Church, Rutland. Flooded and partially submerged by creation of Rutland Water.
Normanton Church is situated at the edge of Rutland Water, the
largest man-made lake in the UK. Originally called Empingham
Reservoir, the lake is one of many that were brought into being
since the late nineteenth century to provide water for an ever-
increasing population.
Lying near Oakham in the county of Rutland, the reservoir was
completed in 1977 and now covers an area of 3,100 acres. Rutland
Water is available for recreational purposes as well as providing
water for domestic and industrial use.
To make Rutland Water it was necessary to flood a large part of the
parish of Empingham. Sadly, this meant the destruction of some local
communities. Both the village of Nether Hambleton and Middle
Hambleton were cleared. The river Gwash and several others were
diverted to provide the water needed to fill the reservoir.
The valley had to be cleared and so Normanton Church was
deconsecrated and scheduled for demolition, but the general public
had other ideas and their protests were successful. When it came
time to flood the area, it became obvious that the church would be
partially submerged once the high-water level was reached. This
would mean the gradual erosion of its lower walls and foundations. A
hastily formed trust was organised with the aim of rescuing the
building from a watery demise and various proposals were considered.
Finally, it was decided that the lower level of the church should be
filled with rubble and topped with concrete to create a new floor.
This would be approximately 60cm above the water level. The church
would become a small island once the reservoir was filled, and so a
causeway was built connecting it to the nearby shore of the lake and
an embankment was constructed around the building. A layer of
boulders was then put in place as a defensive breakwater.
