Whale Watching at Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull, Newfoundland)
One windy weekend this past summer we took a trip to the Bonavista Peninsula. In 1497 John Cabot landed at Cape Bonavista and discovered this New Founde Land. After a look around the lighthouse, we watched as minke and humpback whales surfaced less than 100 meters off shore. Excited shouts of, Theres a whale! echoed every time one broke the surface and then the cameras started shooting. The other statement overheard more than once was, The batteries in my camera are dead! Be sure to bring extra batteries for your camera as there is too much to capture on one set.
Just as amazing as the whales were the gannets diving into the water after fish. Their aerial bombardment of the ocean followed by their bobbing back up to the surface brought looks of amazement followed by smiles every time. After a few hours at the Cape and a look at The Dungeon we headed into the town of Bonavista to visit the Matthew Legacy Museum. Matthew was the ship Cabot sailed over 500 years ago. Both the history of the Matthew and the workmanship that went into building the replica make it a worthwhile visit.
From the Matthew we went to the Ryan Premises National Historic Site. This museum is housed in restored fish merchant buildings and tells the story of the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery. And quite a story it is! We were fortunate that while at the Premises local musicians Fergus OByrne and Jim Payne gave a concert. In keeping with the sites fishing theme, their songs and stories revolved around the sea. One song rendered was a favorite of mine - Old Polina. The song is about whaling ships racing to Newfoundland. With so many visitors coming to Newfoundland and Labrador to watch whales, it seemed a fitting song to end their set and our visit to Bonavista.
