Come for a stroll along my home: the Tyrone, Whitecliffs and Rye Beach foreshore on the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, Australia. We found a Sea Cucumber and a Jellyfish (I think it was an egg-sac of some kind) while the sun was setting.
Port Phillip Bay or simply 'The Bay' is full of biodiversity, with many species endemic to the area; not found anywhere else in the world.
This biodiversity has, of course, many threats, like pollution and introduced pests like the Northern Pacific Seastar.
Between 2008 and 2009, nearly 23million cubic metres of sand and sediment was dredged from the bay to deepen shipping channels servicing the Port of Melbourne.
Official reports might suggest that the environmental impact of the channel deepening project has been minimal; that higher tides, stronger currents and beach erosion are all occurring at normal rates. Some locals might tell you otherwise.
In reality, it will be years before we can determine the true impact the dredging may have had.
