WHITE CLIFFS & LIME KILN, RYE
Presenting White Cliffs and the Limeburners' Kiln at Rye in Melbourne, Australia.

From around 1840 till the early to mid 20th century, limestone was collected near ground level in the area of Rye and its surrounds. Local kilns were established and used to fire the limestone, so that it would break down into lime. The lime would be bagged and then transported by sea-vessel to the growing centre of Melbourne to be used in mortar for the building industry. The local vegetation that was used in the kilns was exhausted and deliveries of wood then needed to arrive on returning vessels. The ti-trees we see today grew to replace the she oaks, banksias and swamp gums that once flourished in the area. The Limeburners' Kiln at Rye was a reconstruction project undertaken and funded in 1989 by the Lions and Rotary Service Clubs of Rye with some additional financial assistance from the Bicentennial Authority and the Shire of Flinders.

1 cube sugar
1½ ounces (35ml) Sazerac Rye Whiskey or Buffalo Trace Bourbon
¼ ounce Herbsaint
3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters

In 1838, Antoine Amedie Peychaud, owner of a New Orleans apothecary, treated his friends to brandy toddies of his own recipe, including his Peychaud's Bitters, made from a secret family recipe. The toddies were made using a double-ended egg cup as a measuring cup or jigger, then known as a coquetier (pronounced ko-k-tay), from which the word cocktail was derived. Thus, the world's first cocktail was born!

A spherical goldfish bowl filled with water.
Several dry but unfired pots relating to the timeline of the history of pottery making are lined up. These pots are facsimiles of ones on show in the museum which were all made or found in the Southend area.
Each day one pot is immersed in the bowl and allowed to dissolve back into mud.
Each pot contains 'treasure' (kept in bank cash bags) which is revealed as the pot breaks down.
Each successive pot represents a later time period, and may be in a different clay colour to result in stratification of the sediment.
I will record the process in photographs and on video.

Betchworth Lime Kilns
The Dorking Greystone Lime Co.Ltd. was founded at Betchworth in 1865 by brothers Eustace and Charles Townsend Hook of Snodland paperworks, Kent. The works were managed by the engineer William Finlay and in 1866, Finlay installed the first continuous Hoffman kilns in England there, in 1867 six conical flare kilns were erected in what became the southern battery, producing white lime, joined later by another six kilns of the same type forming the eastern battery. In 1887 - 1897 the southern battery was partly replaced by two pairs of Dietzsch kilns, followed by a new crushing and hydrator plant immediately to the southeast.
Finally, around 1900 a large Smidth type-kiln was built to the north of the works yard, completing the development of kilns at the site.
For reasons unknown this was abandoned during construction and was never fired. The works were linked to the main line at Betchworth Station by a standard-gauge works railway that descended by means of a steep switchback arrangement, while a separate narrow gauge tramway linked the quarry with the kilns. The works had several locomotives between During 1900-01, an aerial ropeway was installed by the Ropeways Syndicate Ltd of London to transport limestone to a gantry placed above the Dietzsch kilns. As well as lime for agricultural and building use, the works produced white lime for gas purification and sewage treatment. Also, until 1945, lump hearthstone was quarried underground at the site with the main entrance to the mine being behind the east kiln battery. After this, the tunnels were sealed and only surface seams were quarried until 1950 when work ceased altogether. At the end of 1959, Dorking Greystone Lime ceased trading and the works became the property of the Dorking Lime Co. Apart from the narrow gauge line that served the hydrator, rail workings ended in 1960 and many of the locos and rolling stock were bought by preservationists. After lime working ceased in the 1970s, the quarries were used for landfill and the works area is now used as a haulage depot. Betchworth Limeworks are Grade two Listed (except work sheds) very interesting explore in a beautiful peaceful setting.

On sale 17th April 2019.
A Chinese bronze incense burner / censer, late Ming / early Qing dynasty, relief cast dragon mask handles, with 16 character seal mark under base, on original separate stand, rim diameter 15.5cm, height 10cm.
This incense burner has come from a local private estate in Rye, it has been polished in recent years so has lost its original dark patina. There is a shallow dent in one side which has left a very thin line mark, but there are no repairs or holes. The lion mask handles are lightly rubbed on the high points. The inside surface of the bowl is untouched with the original patina. The 16character seal mark under the base is clear and not rubbed. The stand is the same colour, and fits perfectly but does not have a impressed mark.
We found an almost identical incense burner sold by Sotheby's Hong Kong on 3rd December 2015 (Lot 1) which was slightly smaller and had no stand.
Main incense burner weight is 1295grams.
Stand weighs 630grams.
Total weight 1929grams.
