Ryhope Engines Museum The finest single industrial monument in the north-east
Ryhope Engines Museum Open day
Ryhope Opens it's doors to a steaming weekend - complete with new lift and disabled access to all areas of the museum. Come along to the historic steam powered pumping station on one the steaming days set up throughout the year and witness some marvellous victorian engineering for yourself.
Ryhope Pumping Station
The Ryhope Engines Museum is based on the Ryhope Pumping Station which was built in 1868 to supply water to the Sunderland area. The station ceased operation in 1967 - after 100 years of continuous use.
The Museum is now regarded as one of the finest industrial monuments in the North East of England, and is in a Grade II (starred) listed building. Although the station no longer pumps water, the two 100 horsepower beam engines are kept in working order by volunteer members of the Ryhope Engines Trust, and 'steamed' periodically for the benefit of our visitors.

The City of Sunderland is a local government district of Tyne and Wear, in North East England, with the status of a city and metropolitan borough. Sunderland is named after its largest settlement, Sunderland, but covers a far larger area which includes the towns of Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton-le-Spring, Washington, and a range of suburban villages.
Sunderland was formed in 1974, titled the Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland, as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972 and is an amalgamation of four former local government districts of County Durham. Sunderland was granted city status in 1992, the 40th anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth II's accession.
The only professional sporting team in Sunderland is the football team, Sunderland A.F.C., which was formed in 1879, and plays home games at the 49,000 seat capacity Stadium of Light. Sunderland is home to a Nissan car manufacturing plant. Over recent years Sunderland city centre has seen a re-development of the Sunniside area taking place, with new bars, cafes and retailers opening their doors on the Eastern side of the city. The Sunniside area now includes an Empire Cinema, Gala Casino and many surrounding eateries.

Hope Hill and former Ryhope Colliery
This is a short video of the former site of Ryhope Colliery which closed in 1965, and in the late '70s the site was cleaned up and a nature reserve was set up between the Colliery and Hope Hill (Tunstall Hills). The track that I am standing on was the train tracks. The first shot is of Tunstall Hill or known locally Hope Hill, when I pan round to the left is the site of the old Colliery,

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station
Britain's most complete example of a Victorian sewage pumping station.
From 1885 to 1971 this site dealt with the effluent from Burton upon Trent's brewing industry. Among its many treasures is the oldest working
steam driven dynamo in the country.
