Ryotsu Port Sado Island
From Niigata, Sado Kisen operates car ferries (departures every 3 hours) and high speed jetfoils (departures every 1-2 hours depending on the season) to Ryotsu on Sado Island.
The one way journey by car ferry takes 2.5 hours and costs 2,510 yen per person and around 17,900 yen for an average sized car.
By jetfoil it takes one hour and costs 6,520 yen.
Arriving in Sado was simply as if you were coming off the expressway. Simple as that.
Riding Boeing JetFoil Ferry to Sado Island (佐渡島） from Niigata, Japan
Sado Island （再度が島） is an island in Japan Sea and it is part of Japan. This island is one of the most beautiful places to visit and enjoy. The famous taiko drum band Koodo, live and practice on this Island when they are not touring.
Ryotsu is Sado Island's capital city and Ryotsu Port terminal is serviced by boat from Niigata's Sado Kisen terminal. There are regular boats that are part of this service but the most exciting (expensive too) one is to go there on a Boeing JetFoil Ferry. It takes about an hour to get to Sado Island from Niigata on the JetFoil Ferry. Other boats take about two to three hours.
JetFoil Ferry is essentially a hover craft and uses hydrofoil technology to hover above water. At the cruising speed the boat takes off about three feet above water and hovers. This creates an awesome sailing experience at a very fast speed. The speed is the result of no drag on the boat since it is flying over water. Also, the typical shake experienced on a regular boat is virtually eliminated.
The JetFoil boats are fun to watch from outside also, unfortunately I did not get a chance to take that video. But there are many videos of JetFoils flying over water in YouTube, check it out.

I had a rented car, and if you are arriving in Ryotsu port you can rent a car and this will cut the car ferry cost.
There frequent buses serving all the ports.
Ryotsu Minato, Ferry Terminal
Back at Sado Main Ferry port to return back to Niigata mainland Japan.
Ferry takes 2.30 mins for 45 KM sea journey.
Terminal is fully facilated terminal with Car rentals and comfortable modern waiting areas.
Most of terminal is completed with self serving vending machines.

The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.

Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.

The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.

＊当日は、歩くのもままならない強風とアラレでした。
強い低気圧の影響で新潟全域強風と海上は波浪でフェリーは欠航、
その為、接岸中のあかねを撮影できたように思います(本来なら出航中)。
＊大荒れの中、えちごトキめき鉄道/JR東日本 直江津駅へと川沿い(河口)をフラフラと歩くさなか
モニュメントを見つけ、この地にオーストラリア製船舶がいる事は
偶然なのか、意図的なのか、、暫し深い感慨を覚え
更に足取り重く、、、トボトボと駅に向かいました。
