Throwing Yen Away at Motonosumi Inari Shrine (元乃隅稲成神社)
Situated on the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture is Nagato City. Home to Japan’s longest running Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and also home to 123 torii gates overlooking the Sea of Japan at Motonosumi Inari Shrine. In 1955, Motonosumi Inari Shrine split from Shimane Prefecture’s Taikodani Inari Shrine after an apparent “divine revelation” from a white fox. The shrine is such an attraction that CNN listed it as one of 31 most beautiful places in Japan. The contrast of sparkling blue water, green grass, and red torii gates stretching 100 meters will leave a lasting impression.
What is particularly unusual about this shrine, other than the breathtaking scenery, is that the offering box is located at the top of the shrine’s welcoming torii gate. Therefore, you must summon your inner Kobe Bryant to throw money into the offering box in order to make your donation to the shrine. On windy days, making it into the box can prove to be a rather difficult task. Well, that and trying to concentrate while ducking flying yen! However, if you can make your free throw donation shot, it is said that your wish will come true.
Raising Dragon Tide (Ryugu no Shiofuki) is another attraction at Motonosumi Inari Shrine and is a natural phenomenon. When approaching waves break against the cliff’s surface seawater can shoot up to a height of 30 meters. This experience has been expressed by many as witnessing a dragon beginning its journey to the heavens above.
