Stockholm Walks: Sigtuna historic center to the medeival ruin (natural sound)
Stadsvandring i Sigtuna. Virtual walk a rainy day in charming Sigtuna, about an hour from Stockholm. Founded in 970 it claims to be Sweden’s oldest city. It was home to the first Christian king and the most important city for a long time. Loaded with history, on lake Mälaren and close to Stockholm, this is a popular place to visit. This walk will take you through the main street, where I think most of the buildings are from the 1700´s, (the café we step by are from 1600´s though), on to the ruin of St Olof Church (1100´s), take a look into Maria Church (1230) and end by one of Sigtunas many rune stones.

SIGTUNA - RUNES of the OLDEST TOWN in SWEDEN
I took a trip up north to visit Sigtuna, oldest town in Sweden and once the ancient capitol.
We took a train from Central station to Marsta then switched to a bus (#575). We exited right near the ruins of St. Olaf's church.

Top 8 Beautiful Towns And Villages To Visit in Sweden
Top 8 Beautiful Towns And Villages To Visit in Sweden.
The likes of the big cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg are great but for a truly intimate Swedish experience, these 8 towns and villages are definitely worth spending the time to explore when you visit Sweden.
1.) Ystad.
Located in the South of Sweden, Ystad not only boasts a 12th-century monastery that is one of the best-preserved in Sweden, but it’s also known for its pretty cobblestone lanes and pastel-colored houses. It’s also the town where Henning Mankell based his famous Kurt Wallander novels in.
2.) Visby.
If you travel to Gotland, Visby will automatically be on your itinerary, which is a good thing – the whole town is so picturesque your camera trigger-finger will probably end up aching from all the photos you’ll take. Visby still looks like it's in the Middle Ages and is understandably a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
3.) Sigtuna.
Sigtuna prides itself with being the oldest town in Sweden. Founded in the year 980, Sigtuna still has a lot of historical sites, like the ruins of St Lars Church and St Olof’s Church. If you decide to go on a more nature-based experience, the beautiful Lake Mälaren awaits to be explored by boat.
4.) Mölle.
Mölle has a very nice-looking harbor but the real draw to this village is definitely Kullaberg Nature Reserve. It’s a bird watcher's haven and pretty fantastic for hikers. The area also has a lot of archaeological sites (like ancient stone circles that date back to the Stone Age).
5.) Kiruna.
The northernmost town of Sweden is located in the Swedish part of Lapland and therefore very popular with winter sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. The Kiruna church was voted the prettiest building of Sweden – even more, a reason to visit this remote gem in the middle of lakes, forest and mountains.
6.) Kalmar.
If you thought only Central Europe has Renaissance Castles, you will not believe your eyes in Kalmar. The castle of Kalmar is a breathtaking view, and only one of the many cool things to see and explore here.
7.) Östersund.
Östersund is home to the Swedish version of the Loch Ness monster. Located on the shore of Lake Storsjön, it has an entire museum dedicated to the history and strange sightings of the monster. The biggest drawcard is the Jamtli Open Air Museum, though – here, you can explore a village full of people reenacting Swedish life in the 19th century.
8.) Rättvik.
Rättvik is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sweden. It’s the center of Swedish Folk music and hosts the annual Musik vid Siljan Festival. Also, you can walk out onto the lake on the 625-meter long pier. Just come prepared for stunning scenery and don’t forget your camera.

Leopold - Sigtuna - October 2019
Last weekend my family went to see Leopold, my dear first cousin once removed, when he was baptised in Mariakyrkan – St. Mary’s church in Sigtuna, Sweden. Dominican friars built the brick church in the mid-13th century, making it one of the oldest brick buildings in the Lake Mälaren valley.

Solen sken vi åt sallad i parken, och en god mjukglass.
Sigtuna är en av de lästa städerna i landet, det finns hus från 1600 talet. Tant brun´s cafe är från 1600 talet, huset är så gammalt.

Hej Sigtuna, Sweden
Join me for a walk in late autumn of last year to the lovely little Swedish village of Sigtuna (founded c. 980, around 49 km from Stockholm). The path into town from my hotel in rural outskirts followed shore of Lake Mälaren. The day was bitterly cold and rainy, which did not deter flotillas of ducks, or the residents of Sigtuna from going energetically about their business. The beautiful graveyard shown is situated near the ruins of St. Olafs church, which dates from the 12th century, and the newer, (14th c.) still active Mariakyrkan or St. Mary's. In town I stopped for reviving hot latte and pastry, later a pizza ( the national culinary passion of Sweden!). Twilight was falling on walk back to the hotel, woodsmoke in air, lights burning cozily in snug houses along the way.

Världsarvsresenären / The World Heritage Traveler: Stockholm (Birka/Drottningholm/Skogskyrkogården)
As World Heritage Traveller I have visited over 250 UNESCO-sites in the world. But in my hometown there are also 3 sites to see, that tells the story of three historic periods in Swedens capital Stockholm. From the Viking Age in Birka, to the world-famous Drottningholm Castle up to the Woodland Cemetary (Skogskyrkogården).
Skallsjö kyrkoruin 2011
Skallsjö church was built in the 13th century at a place then centrally situated. In 1686 it was enlarged by about nine meters to the east. It was built of granite, had a shingled roof and was plastered on the in- and outsides. There were family graves in the church for the Örnevinge and Trana families. An altar-piece was donated in 1758 by C W von Döbeln. In 1774 the church was restored, and the ceiling was vaulted and painted. The western entrance was pulled down, probably in the 19th century. In 1863 the medieval church was abandoned after a new, more centrally situated church had been built. The old church then decayed rapidly.
