S Pulse Dream Plaza, Shizuoka Prefecture monkey show
Sarumawashi, or monkey performances, dating back to over 1000 years, are one of the most traditional performing arts in Japan and is inherited and passed on from father to child. Trainers would walk around the town playing a hand drum announcing that the performance was about to begin. Sacred dances were performed in front of horse stables with monkey trainers for the purpose of protecting horses going into battle and it is believed that it is the origin of monkey training. During the time of war, regional lords covered their quivers with monkey hide as a way of transferring the protective power of the monkey to their horses. They were seen as divine messengers between this world and the next. They were known to protect children against diseases and dispelling evil. Macaques have been, according to folklore, used to protect communities from epidemics. Statues of these monkeys can be seen in some shrines and temples.
Suo no Sarumawashi, as the art is called, consisted of trainers who came from the lower classes of Japanese society, similar to that of the untouchables in India. That system no longer exists and like in the past, the trainers and monkeys still share a life-long bond. The monkeys take years to train and over that time form a strong relationship with their human companions. These acts usually contain acrobatic stunts and comedy performed by these highly trained macaque monkeys and their trainers. The difference between a highly trained macaque and an amateur is immediately evident. There is a natural, seamless flow, no shouting, hitting, pushing or pulling on the rope attached to the monkey is necessary. The monkey looks at ease and all too happy to be doing its days work, which is bringing smiles and laughter to people. The rope is simply for us humans....to give us a sense of security, just as we keep our dogs on leashes when we take them outside for a walk. In a phone interview with the trainer's interpreter after the show I was told that the macaque was a rescue monkey who was over 3 years old and they had been together since it was a newborn.
This is a spiritual act, combining compassion, patience, love and devotion for God's creatures. It trains the trainer to look at his own weaknesses. I filmed this act because this is what I saw. This is what I felt coming from both trainer and monkey. It brought me joy. I saw it in the faces of the children and adults alike.
This was filmed at Shizuoka's S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a commercial complex in Shimizu Port, 13-15 Irifune-cho, Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka-shi, Shizuoka-ken, Japan., famous for its tuna.

There are three main reasons why Kunozan Toshogu is a national treasure:
1.The foundations, nearly 400 years old, remain almost intact;
2. Master's craftsman Nakai Masakiyo created many buildings that are designated as national treasures, of which Kunozan Toshogu is the last;
3.The Kunozan Toshogu is the original Gongen-Zukuri style of shrine architecture, which is differentiated by the Ishi-no-ma between the main shrine and the worship hall.

２０１５年も終わろうとする「ドリプラ」のネオン演出です。鮮やかなイルミネーションが目的ではなかったのですが、気まぐれで撮影。何故か寂しい雰囲気の様な？動画になってしまった。なので、ついでに思いっ切り悲しめのサウンドを加えてみました。しみじみとした雰囲気が、妙に印象に残ります。

Chibi Maruko-chan is an enormously popular comic and television character. The television series originally aired during the early 90's though it remains very popular today. The show is set in the early 70's and centers around the lives of Maruko and her family. The family lives in the city of Shimizu which is now a part of Shizuoka (where we live). The original manga was authored by Momoko Sakura who grew up in Shimizu.

The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
