SS Yongala July 2015 morning dive
The SS Yongala went down off the cost of Townsville during a cyclone in 1911, Tragically all 122 on board died. The wreck wasn't found until 1958, in the middle of a sea of sand. It has therefore become an awesome artificial reef and spectacular dive site.
This is from the first dive of the day, in the morning, diving with Yongala Dive out of Alva Beach. Shot on a GoPro Hero 4 Black with a red filter and no additional lighting.

The much better HD version here:
Footage from two dives on February 3, 2013 at the S.S. Yongala Wreck from Alva Beach, Australia, with the Yongala Dive Company. yongaladive.com.au/
All footage captured with GoPro Hero3 Black edition with two Sola video lights and SRP URpro CY filter.
The Yongala wreck site consistently ranks among the top 10 best dives sites in the world. It's been under water since 1911 and has become a fantastic artificial reef. I only spent a day diving here but I plan to stay longer the next time I'm back.
AUSTRALIA BEST DIVE (S.S.YONGALA)
Over 100 years ago the Steam Ship Yongala sank in a cyclone in the Great Barrier Reef marine Park (that’s 1 year before the Titanic ! ) One of the most tragic maritime disasters in Australia, now the Yongala lives on in harmony with the marine environment.
Located just 12 nautical miles from Alva Beach (near Cape Bowling Green) the wreck lies on its starboard side, 14 metres deep on the top and 28 metres on the sand. It’s the largest, most intact historic shipwreck in Australian Waters – 109 metres long and home to mega marine life.

The S.S. YONGALA sank in a cyclone on the 23rd March 1911 (over 100 years ago) and remained undiscovered for almost 50 years, not being positively identified until 1958. The wreck now lies on its starboard side in 14-28 metres of water and at 109m long is the largest and most intact, historic shipwreck in Australian waters.

SS YONGALA: The BEST wreck dive in the WORLD!
Dived in august 2016 with Yongala Dive from Ayr, Alva Beach.
What a incredible prestine dive site, full of life! From Queensland Groupers, giant turtles, Bull shark, Olive sea snakes, eagle and cowtail rays, dolphins, whales, maori wrasses, GTs and a ton of small fish!
History: The Yongala is a shipwreck in Queensland, Australia. She sank during a cyclone in 1911 killing 122 people, a racehorse called Moonshine and a red Lincolnshire bull. She had no telegraph facilities and so could not be warned of the weather ahead. In 1981 the Yongala was given official protection under the Historic Shipwrecks Act. The ship is 90 km southeast of Townsville, 10 km away form Cape Bowling Green. She is arguably the best dive in the world.

GroPro Video Best Dive in Australia. Yongala Ship Wreck
The Yongala Ship Wreck is an incredible dive, better than the Great Barrier Reef, best dive in Australia. Lots of fish, small medium and large, turtles, Rays, snakes. We saw a Moray eel out in the open. Humpback Whale sounds 2 minutes in. We saw the Humpbacks breaching on the way home in the boat. I went with Yongala Dive out of Alva Beach.
S.S.Yongala Australia
S.S.Yongala sank in 1911 all 122 passengers were lost, she lay undisturbed for over 50 years before being found 11 miles of the coast of Cape Bowling Green Queensland. We dived her a few day's after the cyclone of February 2011. The Yongala which used to be covered with coral looks as if it has been sandblasted clean in places by the cyclone, The viability was not brilliant as the water had not yet settled. Don't be put off by this the Yongala is still a good dive, and at times so many fish that it's impossible to see the wreck
