Island-Hopping Day 3: St. Maarten
Day 3
June 27, 2018
Come with us to beautiful St. Maarten. This is Part 3 of a 5-part video series. On Day 3, we started the day with some time on the beach at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina, then our family enjoyed a free bus trip into Philipsburg, sponsored by ama Jewelers, St. Maarten.
In this video, we take you along as we splash at the beach; encourage my 3-year-old as he writes the alphabet in the sand, despite the water repeatedly taking it away; we stroll through Philipsburg and catch a glimpse of cruise ships in port, feeding my inner cruise geek; we see the real-life Yoda Guy; visit the Guavaberry shop and treat ourselves to Guavaberry Coladas; and enjoy easygoing St. Maarten.
I know that this video does not share every single moment of our trip, and that’s because I truly do believe in the full experience of getting away and spending time with my family, so videotaping any at all is a stretch for me… which means that I will not always have a camera rolling. That being said, I hope that what we have captured and what we share with you here is inspiring and helpful. So, go on… plan your next family vacation, and enjoy!

A Catamaran Excursion (Party) Sailing in Philipsburg St Maarten.
St Maarten/Saint Martin (French: Saint-Martin; Dutch: Sint Maarten) is an island in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km (190 mi) east of Puerto Rico. The 87-square-kilometre (34 sq mi) island is divided roughly 60/40 between France (53 km2, 20 sq mi) and the Kingdom of the Netherlands (34 km2, 13 sq mi). The two parts are roughly equal in population. It is the smallest inhabited sea island divided between two nations. The division dates to 1648. The southern Dutch part comprises Sint Maarten and is one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The northern French part comprises the Collectivité de Saint-Martin and is an overseas collectivity of France.
Philipsburg, St Maarten, is the main town and capital of the country of Sint Maarten. The town is situated on a narrow stretch of land between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond. It functions as the commercial center of the island. As of 2006, it has 1,338 inhabitants. The main shopping district, Front Street (in Duth: Voorstraat), is in the heart of the city.

2016 Carnival Cruise St. Martin - St. Maarten
Our short stop on the Dutch, Sint Maarten, and French, Saint Martin, island in the Caribbean Sea. We went on a bus tour around the island and went for a walk through town past the tourist area of the port. Everyone was kind and offered and hello as we passed by. We were noticing the state of most all the homes and businesses is not optimal. It seemed as though they relied heavily on tourist income and use it to center the island around that. Beautiful, rain soaked hills and vibrant flowered trees filled our view.

St Maarten Island Tour
St Maarten in owned by the French and the Dutch. One of our stops during our Caribean Cruise
Maho Beach & Philipsburg, St Maarten | Must Do Travels
St Maarten is definitely open for business, and the crew at Must Do Travels had a fun time exploring this tiny, yet adventure packed island.
We walked all over Philipsburg, and hired a taxi to take us around the island. We eventually stopped at the world famous Maho Beach and hung out for hours watching the planes come in to land at the Princess Juliana International Airport.
There are still some signs of damage from Hurricane Irma scattered across the island, with a lot of construction back underway. Almost all of the tourist facilities have been repaired, and are back in working order. Now is a great time to go, as there are slightly less tourists there than usual, and the locals are among the friendliest people you could meet in the entire world.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. St. Martin is the smallest island in the world divided between two countries, France and the Netherlands. The northern French part of the island is known as St. Martin and is an overseas collectivity of France. The land mass of St. Martin is split roughly 60/40 with the larger French side covering about 20 square miles. There is no physical border between the two countries.
2. In 1493, explorer Christopher Columbus embarked on his second voyage to the New World on behalf of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I of Spain. At Columbus' time, St. Martin was populated, if at all, by Carib amerindians. The Caribs' territory was not completely conquered until the mid-17th century when most of them perished in the struggle between the French, British, Dutch, Danes and Spanish for control of the West Indies islands around the Caribbean Sea. A massive influx of African slaves took place in the 18th century with the development of sugarcane plantations by the French and Dutch. On some of their territories the British imported Chinese and South Asians to take the place of slaves. Thus, St. Martin and the other islands are populated by a mixture of Amerindian, European, African, Indian and Asian peoples.
3. The division of the island between the Netherlands and France dates to March 23, 1648, under the Treaty of Concordia. Local folklore indicates that the division of land began with walking contest between a Frenchman and a Dutchman. Before they started, the Frenchman drank wine while the Dutchman drank the stronger jenever (Dutch gin), allowing the Frenchman to cover more territory and claim more land.
4. Marigot is the capital of the French side of Saint Martin.
5. Pic Paradis is the highest point (424m) on the island and affords a breathtaking view of the island. You can head to Loterie Farm where you can pick up a map or schedule a private, guided tour and hike your way to the top. The hike takes about 1.5 hours, after which you can relax by their beautiful spring-fed pool. If you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the green monkeys that live in the forest there!
6. St.Maarten – St.Martin is 37 square miles of tropical paradise, and it also boasts 37 beaches! St. Martin's Dutch side is known for its festive nightlife, beaches, jewellery, drinks made with native rum-based guavaberry liquors, and casinos. The island's French side is known for its nude beaches, clothes, shopping (including outdoor markets), and French and Indian Caribbean cuisine. Shopping on St Maarten and Saint Martin offers duty-free goods in numerous boutiques. Most often the designer goods are offered at significant discounts, often up to 40% lower than EU retail prices.
7. The island is served by many major airlines that daily bring in large jet aircraft, including Boeing 747s and Airbus A340s carrying tourists from across the world. The short main runway at Princess Juliana International Airport, and its position between a large hill and a beach, causes some spectacular approaches. Aviation photographers flock to the airport to capture pictures of large jets just a few metres above sunbathers on Maho Beach. There is a small airport on the French side of the island at Grand Case, L'Espérance Airport for small aircraft serving neighbouring Caribbean islands.
