Saamis Tepee and Police Point Park - Medicine Hat, AB, Canada
My first 19 slides are from the Saamis Tepee and the surrounding area. The last 18 are of Police Point Park in Medicine Hat.
About the SAAMIS TEPEE
~~Saamis Tepee is a very recognizable landmark located easily in the community of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
Towering at just over 65 metres (215 feet) the giant steel tepee looms over the Seven Persons Creek river valley and its coulees.
The Saamis Tepee was built in 1988 for the Calgary Winter Olympics by Steve Illes. The tepee once housed the famous Olympic flame during the ceremonies.
The tepee was meant as a symbol of the First Nation people during the Olympics. The colors of the tepee rings have significance. The white ring is said to represent purity, the red represents the sun and the blue means water.
After the Olympics, the giant tepee was disassembled and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Today, it sits on a ridge, easily viewed from Highway #1 when coming and going from Medicine Hat.
Inside the Saamis Tepee are a series of 10 historic story boards detailing the lives of the First Nation people. There are giant murals, beautifully done - each with information billboards.
From the Saamis Tepee there is a recreation trail leading north which connects to the Kin Coulee Park and the Heritage Trail System.~~
About POLICE POINT PARK
~~Police Point Park is a wilderness park and recreation destination situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in the community of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
The 98 hectare ( 242 acre) park is a wildlife nature reserve heavily decorated in a forest of cottonwood trees with open fields of prairie grasslands. It is a popular destination for walking, sightseeing and birdwatching.
This Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada park is part of a flood plain and is identified as a riparian area with a sensitive eco system. At one time the parkland was a NWMP (North West Mounted Police) outpost monitoring the fur trade and policing whisky.
Today, it is a wilderness park with very little human intervention located away from city sights and sounds. The lack of noise and high people traffic combined with the high volume of trees and the rich river environment - the park attracts many birds to the area.
The Police Point Park is one of the more popular birdwatching destinations in Medicine Hat for viewing song birds and waterfowl.
Some of the bird sightings may include the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, Fox Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, ,American Tree Sparrows, American Kestrel, Juncos, Red-breasted Nuthatch, House Finches and Black-capped Chickadees.
Connecting to the park is a paved trail and exploring the park is a series of red rock gravel, dirt and sand trails. The paved trail connects the city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada to Police Point Park via the Heritage Trail System.
The side trails in the Police Point Park explore the forested park and the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. Many of the trails are loop routes. Most are very easy going, short and level paths.
The main gravel pathway leads visitors out to the bend in the South Saskatchewan River where the mighty river meets the Rose and Seven Persons Creeks.
Along the trails are information signs, lookout viewing platforms and some sightseeing benches providing some of the best views in the community of the river.
At the entrance of the park is the Police Point Nature Centre. Here they provide washrooms, interpretive guides and more information signs.~~

Winter at Strathcona Island Park in Medicine Hat (4K) | Journey Alberta
While visiting family over the winter season in my hometown of Medicine Hat, my mom and I venture down to Strathcona Island Park to walk around on a more mild winter day. We walk near the interpretive center, and on our walk see a berm constructed to aid in diverting flood waters when the South Saskatchewan River floods again. We also see a tree that had been chewed down by a beaver!
I use the following equipment to make videos:
A Panasonic G7 at 4K/30fps, a GoPro Hero 4, and a DJI Phantom 3 4K.
Stabilized using a Glidecam XR1000, with camera mounted to a Manfrotto quick release plate
Audio Recorded Using a Rode Video Mic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System
Tripod used is a Manfrotto with a fluid head

Worlds Tallest Teepee in 360 Video
According to the City of Medicine Hat, the Saamis Teepee was originally constructed for the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics and is a tribute to Canada’s indigenous peoples heritage. After being moved to Medicine Hat, erection and assembly of the major structural elements of the Saamis Tepee began October 20th, 1991, and was completed in less than one week.
It was built entirely of steel with a concrete foundation, the tepee is ringed with 10 large circular story-boards depicting aspects of native culture and history. The Saamis Tepee has a foundation weight of 800 metric tons, and the dead load of the structure is 200 metric tons. The main masts of the Tepee measure 215 feet (equivalent to a 20 story building!) and the diameter of the Tepee is 160 feet. There are 960 bolts holding the Tepee together.
The Tepee is located along the Trans-Canada Highway in Medicine Hat.

Riverside Veterans' Park, Medicine Hat | Journey Alberta
While in Medicine Hat for the holidays, I journeyed out to Riverside Veterans' Memorial Park. There are monuments there dedicated to people from Medicine Hat who fought in wars, such as the Korean War. There's also a Sherman Tank in the back part of the park, donated in memorial of those lost during World War II. After exploring the park I enjoyed the view of Finlay Bridge, and saw a train crossing down the river across the train bridge. From there I headed across the street and briefly looked at the beautiful architecture of the Medicine Hat City Hall. I had a great time checking out my hometown, and for this video I aimed for a more cinematic look. I didn't shoot it with my GoPro as usual, and opted to use a Nikon DSLR at 24 frames per second, and set the camera color to a flat image so I could color it the way it looks in this final video. Enjoy!

In this episode of Big Things Small Towns, Tamarra revisits a giant landmark that left quite an impact on her as a child and it's just as impressive and towering to her today, even though she's grown a bit since then: Medicine Hat's massive Sammis Tepee. Sammis in Sammis Tepee comes from the Blackfoot word for medicine and was originally constructed for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. Because of the structure's unique stress points, building the tepee was no simple task. It ended up being a greater engineering challenge than the Eiffel Tower! Its final form now is completely different than what it originally looked like at the Olympics — just the two main trusses remain, and the rest was all engineered and manufactured in Medicine Hat.
About Big Things Small Towns
At one time, the largest things spreading across the Canadian prairies were grain elevators and Ukrainian church domes, but in the 1990s, citizens of small towns began building their own roadside giants. Some relevant to the times, some questionably random and some still popping up today.
On Big Things Small Towns we visit six of Alberta's most legendary locations:
- Drumheller! The World's Largest Dinosaur takes you back to prehistoric times. Plus, you can see how it and many other dinos are made.
- Falher! You'll celebrate the World's Largest Bee in more ways than one (including witnessing Tamarra facing one of her biggest fears by participating in their annual bee beard spectacle.
- Vegreville! You'll find out why the World's Largest Pysanka (or painted egg) is truly unique from creation to design.
- Glendon! Tamarra's headed to take a bite out of its world-famous perogy and discover how the monument may have saved the town itself.
- Donalda! The World's Largest Oil Lamp has been lighting the way for tourists to discover the beauty within the walls of the town.
- Medicine Hat! This town celebrates Indigenous art and identity with the spectacular Saamis Tepee that celebrates culture, history and the legacy of the Edmonton Olympics.
You get to see these objects and the diverse Alberta landscape through the lens of spectacular drone visuals while you learn about Alberta's rich history and, more importantly, start planning your own road trip. Check back for more Big Things Small Towns over the next few weeks.

This may be the largest collection of lamps in the world
On this episode of Big Things Small Towns, Tamarra heads to Donalda, Alberta, one of the prairies best kept secrets but perhaps not for long.

Donalda, Alta. is full of colour and culture despite it's shrinking population. We meet with the original lamp committee and hear why the creation of an oil lamp gave its citizens purpose and faith that kept the town alive for generations to come.
All across small town Alberta, these objects are lighting the way for tourists and citizens alike to come appreciate life on the prairies... even if only for a moment to see the breathtaking view the giant lamp provides of the edge of Alberta's badlands.
