How to listen to lakes?
Have you ever tried to convert your data to a sound? Joonatan Ala-Könni from University of Helsinki analyzes the temperature profiles of lakes for his research. Temperature profile of lake Kuivajärvi, for which Joonatan did the data interpretation, was measured for about four months.
Sound is just vibrations. So Joonatan thought to present the vibrations in temperature profile of Kuivajärvi lake as vibrations in the air to create a soundtrack. He speeded up the vibrations in temperature 100 000 times and turned it into a sound that you can hear in the video.
As it turns out, every lake has it's unique temperature oscillation pattern. In this sense, every lake is a bell with its own soundtrack.
Finland is the country of thousands of lakes. Perhaps, one day you will buy an album of thousands of soundtracks of Finnish lakes, every each of them would be unique. --------- Joonatan Ala-Könni played this soundtrack and explained his research in the talk How To Listen To Lakes for #NightOfTheArts2017 #TAITEIDENYÖ2017 event When Science Meets Art organized by The Science Basement
