Sacramento, capital of the U.S. state of California, lies at the confluence of the Sacramento River and American River. The district of Old Sacramento harkens back to the city’s Gold Rush era, with wooden sidewalks and wagon rides. One of several museums in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum depicts the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, one of the country’s earliest technological feats.
Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in California, settled between the confluences of the Sacramento and American rivers. It was founded in 1849 and there are many reminders of the history of the city including Sutter's Fort, Old Sacramento, and remnants of the original ground level of Sacramento. It experienced explosive growth when gold was discovered in 1848 in nearby Coloma, and the gold rush that followed was the largest human migration in history. Currently it has a population of 490,000 in the city and over two million in the metropolitan area.
The pace of life is somewhat slower than in other large Californian cities, and the people are generally warm and friendly. The city is generally viewed as being affordable for being a large California city. Once a thriving riverfront pioneer town, Old Sacramento now primarily exists as living historic district. The boardwalk style sidewalks and horse-drawn stagecoaches give this small section of town a unique flavor. Old Sacramento contains several museums, restaurants, and the usual assortment of souvenir shops all within walking distance of each other. Best of all, it's a five minute walk from the Amtrak station. It's best visited in late afternoon and early evening. Parking can be scarce, so be sure to utilize the reasonably priced parking structures in the K Street Mall. There's a nice, short, safe walkway between K Street Mall and Old Sacramento.
Sacramento is fairly easy to navigate due to the numbered and lettered streets, especially in the central district which is laid out in a grid. Numbered streets run north and south while lettered streets run east and west. South of the city center (bounded by Broadway, Front Street, and Alhambra Boulevard), the streets are named Avenue when the lettered streets run out.

Old Sacramento - California [4K]
Old Sacramento is the riverfront historic district, with Gold Rush-era buildings, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s home to numerous museums, including the Sacramento History Museum and the state Railroad Museum, which offers excursion train rides. Souvenir shops sell T-shirts, movie memorabilia, and antiques, and there are several upscale restaurants and a few bars popular with the college crowd.

First Train on the Zoo Line, SSRR
Since I became a part of the Sacramento Southern Railroad MoW, I had been working out on our line rebuilding tracks from our current end of line, to Sutterville Road. Right at Sutterville Road is the Sacramento Zoo, and our tracks on this line end right behind it. On Saturday the 20th, we ran the first train onto these tracks. This was the first train to go over those tracks in over 15 years, other than MoW equipment. We started out the morning watching the train crew set up the train, and watching a cat that found a home on one of the Santa Fe steam engines on exhibit, as well as finish eating our doughnuts. Our train was SW8 2030, and a MKT coach, which we used as a crew car for the day. We got the train to the end of the line, and we all got out of the coach, and onto the locomotive as we uncoupled from the coach. We all then rode slowly down the new tracks, waving to kids out on a baseball field nearby the tracks. These kids were exited to see a train rolling down these tracks, and they were cheering us on. We got down to the end of the line, where our photographer was waiting. We all got off and got into position for our group photo. After the group picture, we continued to run the engine back and forth along the new line to settle ballast, and watch for any defects or soft spots in the ballast as this locomotive is the first train, other than MoW equipment, to roll down the line, and it’s about 76 tons as opposed to 2-5 tons. On the last run, we coupled onto the MKT coach, and ran it down the line because someone said it wouldn’t make it around the curve by the bridge, well it ran just fine through the curve without any problem, and those tracks are nice and smooth. We then went back into town for lunch. After lunch we didn’t get much accomplished. The work took a long few months to get to this point, and required a whole lot of work to be done. Some of the work done includes re-gauging the tracks from narrow gauge to standard gauge, changing out nearly 400 ties, ballast work, and tamping. This was a job well done by all who worked on it.
Thank you guys for watching.

Old Sacramento Waterfront (November 2018)
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
Due to past and current efforts by the State of California, private and public museums, individuals, business, the City and County of Sacramento, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundations, scores of volunteers, and many others, Old Sacramento lives on as thriving shopping and entertainment district as well as a global tourist destination.
