CRAZY MONKEY FOREST UBUD BALI - SACRED RABIES? | Indonesia Travel Vlog 139, 2018
The sacred monkey forest in Ubud Bali is one of the top things to do in Indonesia despite the rabies reports! ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
The Ubud monkey forest is one of the main attractions in Bali, it seems like almost everyone that goes to Ubud (or wants to visit) comes across the monkey forest at some stage. It's known as the sacred forest but the risk is the reports of rabies and monkey bites.
We had to see this for ourselves and make a video - we couldn't leave Bali or Indonesia without experiencing it for ourselves in 2018. To the credit of the Ubud monkey forest it was actually pretty cool and the only people at risk of a bite were the ones dumb enough to get close to the monkeys at risk their own rabies encounters haha.

Ubud Monkey Forest: The Sacred Monkey Sanctuary in Bali
A tour around the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud Bali in 2019. Ubud Monkey Forest is found on the perimeter of the popular cultural capital of Ubud in Bali. (Real name: Mandala Suci Wenara Wana). In the forest, monkeys (long-tailed macaques) roam free and wild in troops with monkeys of all ages. So there are many baby monkeys being carried and taught by the mother monkeys. The monkeys are surprisingly friendly these days (2019) as they have designated feeding areas and all you can eat buffets meaning they no longer pester tourists and visitors for snacks etc. Which otherwise was a problem where they would grab at people and steal loose items when visiting the Ubud Monkey Forest.

Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud Bali ???????? Indonesia
This is the monkey forest in Ubud, Bali. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is home to over 600 monkeys. I had to visit and see for myself. Because so many tourists visit this forest and feed the monkeys, they're known to jump on people and steal their belongings. While nothing of mine was stolen, I did witness hungry monkeys.

The Sacred Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction in Ubud, and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month. The forest comprises approximately a tenth of a square kilometer (approximately 27 acres) and contains at least 115 different species of trees. The Monkey Forest contains the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal temple as well as a Holy Spring bathing temple and another temple used for cremation ceremonies. The Monkey Forest is owned by the village of Padangtegal and village members serve on the Monkey Forest's governing council. The Padangtegal Wenara Wana Foundation manages the Monkey Forest and serves to maintain its sacred integrity and to promote the sacred site as a destination for visitors.
There are 3 temples within its compound. The closest one to the entrance gate is Pura Prajapati which is used for cremation ceremony for the deceased. A little walk further will bring you to the staircase that leads you down to the Holy Bathing Temple at the nearby stream. The most important temple is probably the Pura Dalem Agung which is a local temple for Padangtegal villagers.

BALI Monkey Forest | Sacred Sanctuary | Ubud | Bali | Indonesia
The Monkey Forest - a sacred sanctuary just outside the centre of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. Wander through the shady forest along the pathways and see the monkeys playing and going about their business. There are monuments, temples and market stalls to browse and a cafeteria in the main building for refreshments when the heat is too much. A great attraction in beautiful Ubud.
Ubud Monkey Forest in Bali, Indonesia
Hey friends, while in Ubud, Bali we made our way over to Ubud Monkey Forest also known as Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary where we had monkeys jump on our heads and even try to steal our bags. There is a ton of space and lots of Macaque monkeys ranging from adults down to tiny babies. You can buy bananas to feed the monkeys which is a good opportunity to get a photo with one on your shoulder. There are many cheeky monkeys doing monkey business and they will take off with anything that is not held on to.
There is an entrance fee of 30,000Rp per person which is equivalent to $3 USD.
Some monkeys were very gentle where others were a a bit crazy. We even met a family who said the monkey bit their son on the leg.
Ubud Monkey Forest is located at Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia near the Ubud centre.

Alas Suci Wanara Wana and its contents, one of its applications is the Otonan Jero Gede Tradition carried out at Tumpek Kandang or also known as Tumpek Uye which is a ceremony of our respect as human beings for the contents of nature, animals, and of course this tradition is still maintained today.
