Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy - Italy Tourist Guide
The nine Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains) of northern Italy are groups of chapels and other architectural features created in the late 16th and 17th centuries and dedicated to different aspects of the Christian faith. In addition to their symbolic spiritual meaning, they are of great beauty by virtue of the skill with which they have been integrated into the surrounding natural landscape of hills, forests and lakes. They also house much important artistic material in the form of wall paintings and statuary. (from Unesco.org)

Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Sacri Monti, or Sacred Mountains, located in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions of northern Italy. These mountains were a Renaissance concept, so that locals could go on local pilgrimages rather than making dangerous journeys to the Holy Land. There are nine in total on the World Heritage List, unfortunately we only had time to visit the mountains in Varese and Ossuccio.

They also house much important artistic material in the form of wall paintings and statuary. In 2003, they were inscribed as a World Heritage Site.
Sacro Monte di Varallo
Gaudenzio Ferrari, Statue of Christ on the Road to Calvary, Polychrome wood, ca. 1510
The model of the Sacred Mountain is a Christian creation dating from the late fifteenth century, that during the Counter-Reformation spread from Italy to Europe and the New World. A Sacred Mountain is a devotional complex standing on the slopes of a mountain, with a series of chapels or kiosks containing scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary or the Saints, in the form of painting or sculptures.
As a re-evocation of the New Jerusalem, Sacred Mountains offered pilgrims an opportunity to visit the Holy Places by conjuring up, on a smaller scale, the buildings in which Christ's Passion took place. The Sacred Mountains stand on high ground, at some distance from the town centre, in a more natural setting. They are usually reached by pilgrimage. The itinerary leading up to the Sacred Mountain often re-evokes the Via Dolorosa, the road leading from Jerusalem to Calvary along which Christ carried the Cross.
The nine Sacri Monti are:
* The Sacro Monte or Nuova Gerusalemme (New Jerusalem) of Varallo Sesia (1486), Varallo Sesia, province of Vercelli
* The Sacro Monte of Santa Maria Assunta, Serralunga di Crea (1589), province of Alessandria
* The Sacro Monte of San Francesco, Orta San Giulio (1590), province of Novara
* The Sacro Monte of the Rosary, Varese (1598)
* The Sacro Monte of the Blessed Virgin, Oropa (1617), province of Biella
* The Sacro Monte of the Blessed Virgin of Succour, Ossuccio (1635), province of Como
* The Sacro Monte of the Holy Trinity, Ghiffa (1591), province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola
* The Sacro Monte and Calvary, Domodossola (1657), province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola
* The Sacro Monte of Belmonte, Valperga (1712), province of Turin

Sacro Monte di Varese - ITALY
SACRO MONTE DI VARESE
The Sacro Monte of Varese is part of the nine Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy Pre-Alps in 2003 included in UNESCO's World Heritage.
It consists of fourteen chapels, dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, that serves as the fifteenth chapel which also retains an organ of the neoclassical 1831, by Luigi Maroni Biroldi, restored in 1871 by Peter Talamona and Vincenzo Mascioni in 1989. Work began in 1604, along two miles of a large cobblestone path.
Thanks to munificent donations, the building was much more rapid than that of other sacred mountains, and thirteen of the chapels were finished by 1623. In 1698 the works were completed in their present form. As in the Rosary, the chapels are divided in groups of five. The architectural style of the chapels, the triumphal arches and fountains is diverse, inspired by the ways of the stylistic mannerisms. The statues and frescoes that decorate the chapels are in their highly complex testimony of sacred art in seventeenth-century Milan area.
The village of Santa Maria del Monte, where the shrine is connected to the rest of the city, as well as through a city bus line, through a historic cable car recently brought back into operation.
It seems that the Italians can not watch a high place without wanting to put something on top, and the few times they did so more happily than the Sacro Monte of Varese»
The Sacro Monte of Varese fully respects the idea that the proposal for a Sacred Mountain were placed in a natural landscape of great interest, on a hill where it existed before a secular tradition of pilgrimage and testimonies of faith.

Sacro Monte Calvario Of Domodossola Italy
The Sacred Mount Calvary of Domodossola(also known as Sacro Monte Calvario) is a Roman Catholic sanctuary on the Mattarella Hill, overlooking Domodossola (Piedmont, northern Italy). It is one of the nine Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
It was built in 1657 in response to the wishes of the Capuchin friars, Gioacchino da Cassano and Andrea da Rho. The chapels, dedicated to the Via Crucis, are positioned along a devotional route which starts on the outskirts of Domodossola and ends at the summit of Mount Mattarella. The sanctuaryon the summit was consecrated in 1690 and in 1828 the philosopher priest, Antonio Rosmini, founded the Institute of Charity. Over the centuries the Sacred Mountain has undergone various modifications, rebuilding and restoration
