Manawatu Gorge New Zealand ????????
First look at the Manawatū Gorge replacement route
The NZ Transport Agency has released a computer generated look at the indicative route for the new State Highway 3 replacement for the Manawatū Gorge.
While a final design hasn’t been confirmed, Project Manager Lonnie Dalzell says the indicative route sees the new road run from near the western entry of the closed SH3 gorge route, cross the Ruahine Ranges north of the Gorge, and reconnect to SH3 at Woodville.
“It provides a visualisation which gives people an idea where the road will go over the Ruahine Ranges and a feel for what it might look like,” Mr Dalzell says.
“Great progress is being made on the new road, as well as this sneak peek, the project team has recently completed geotechnical investigations along the proposed corridor of the replacement route.”
“A total of 15 boreholes (the deepest being 50 metres) yielded 530 metres of core samples which have now been sent to the lab for testing. The ground core samples will provide further understanding of the area and key information for the project as we refine our knowledge and continue the investigation of the proposed corridor.”
Mr Dalzell also says the project’s full name, Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Gorge Replacement Route Project, recognises the spiritual, cultural and historical significance of the land near where work has been taking place high in the Ruahine Ranges.
The new road is being constructed due to the closure of SH3 through the Manawatū Gorge. Continued instability at the Kerry’s Wall site has closed the Manawatū Gorge indefinitely and there is still a high-risk of further slips.
Te Apiti Wind Farm & Manawatu Gorge - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 67: Today we are visiting Te Apiti Wind Farm before doing a hike in Manawatu Gorge – just more activities during our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand!

Tomorrow – Day 68 – Check in tomorrow! We post new videos every day!
About this video:
It’s Day 67 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we’re doing 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand and today we are first of all, visiting the Te Apiti Wind Farm. We drive up to Te Apiti Wind Farm near Palmerston North to see giant wind turbines at work. The Te Apiti Wind Farm is a free activity to do near Palmerston North.
After that, we drive back down the hill to Manawatu Gorge. Manawatu Gorge has a number of walks in the area and we opt for Tawa Loop Track in the Manawatu Gorge.
The forest of the Manawatu Gorge is simply stunning with ancient forests, flowing rivers and Maori sculptures along the way. There are loads of information panels along the Tawa Loop Track of the Manawatu Gorge so you can learn more about New Zealand native forests as you hike.
After an amazing hike in the Manawatu Gorge, we hit the road for our final destination tonight, Makoura Lodge.
So what do you think of the Te Apiti Wind Farm and Manawatu Gorge? Are the Te Apiti Wind Farm and Manawatu Gorge places you would stop by on a trip in New Zealand?

New Zealand's Abandoned Road The Manawatu Gorge ????
We snuck in to New Zealand's abandoned road to snap some stunning photos and footage, and to test out the new DJI Mavic Pro 2.
Myself and my buddy Geoff set out on a mission to bike and explore the Manawatu Gorge Road, closed in 2017 due to a major landslip.
a beautiful chasm that separates the Tararura and Ruihine ranges, the road has become quite a unique location for the guerrilla adventurer.
Enjoy!

Saddle Road trip
Windmills, Saddle Road Ashurst to Woodville Spring day. Major route now the Manawatu Gorge has closed. Another road is being considered to be built this will be years away. So much work has been done on the Saddle to make it better for the so many more vehicles each day that now drive it than it was ever intended for.

Takapari Road 4WD drive in Ruahines North Island late April 2019
This is an interesting drive in trip to the tops of the Ruahines starting about 20 minutes from Ashurst. Most std trucks can get up there. It is mainly loose gravel and clay pans. You end up over the Hawkes Bay side above the Wakararas and Dannevirke. If you catch a good day your views alternate between the Manawatu and the Hawkes Bay. There is a rough A frame hut a fair way along which is marked on the map. After the hut the road starts getting a lot tougher with a steep climb. It really is useful to go on a reasonable day as it's pointless if it's raining or covered in cloud. I used windy.com to accurately predict the cloud cover and wind.
