Sado Island Museum, Japan
The Sado History Museum (Sado Rekishi Dentetsukan) exhibits the cultural history of Sado Island, using intriguing displays with animatronic puppets that reenact historical events and local legends. Information in English, however, is sparse.
Many displays center around Sado's history as a place of exile and introduce three of the island's most prominent, unvoluntary visitors: the former Emperor Juntoku, the Buddhist monk Nichiren, the founder of Nichiren Shu, and Zeami, the founder of Noh.
Other exhibits depict some of Sado's local legends, while a separate corner of the museum is dedicated to the late local artist Sasaki Shodo, who was appointed a living national treasure for his invaluable skills as a metal casting artist.
A final attraction of the museum is Charles Jenkins, husband of Soga Hitomi, one of several Japanese nationals who were abducted to North Korea in the 1970s and 80s and returned to Japan in 2002. Mr. Jenkins now works in the museum gift shop

Sado Fishing Village Shukunegi
Stone roofs are one of the ways the roof was waigted and protected from winds battering the island.
Characterised by the narrowest of alleys between the houses, each protects the next from the worst of the weather.
Down in the far southwest of the island is the unusual village of Shukunegi.
This coastal community developed in the latter part of the 17th century (1661-1678) as a home to shipbuilders.
Little shrines A stone niche serves as a wayside shrine in Shukunegi.
400 years of history can be seen and life still as it was 400 years ago.

SADO - Soshin Kimura/Interview - IS JAPAN COOL? DOU (茶道 - 木村 宗慎)
IS JAPAN COOL? DOU
Sado (Chado) is a ceremony not only to make tea (tateru) but also to create a ceremony space by selecting chawan (teabowls) and kakejiku (hanging scroll) for a tokonoma (alcove), and arranging flowers in preparation for guests. S ado is a composite art.
DOU is the way of life that comes close to reaching the essence of existence in pursuit of one’s own field.
The ultimate goal of Japanese martial arts (budo) such as judo, kyudo, kendo, karatedo, iaido, etc. is not only to acquire the techniques (waza) of these martial skills, but also adhere to the way of life that constantly trains the body and the spirit in building character.
The ultimate purpose of Japanese traditional performing/fine arts (geido) such as shodo, nihon-buyo, sado, noh (nogaku), etc. is not simply to acquire the kata (forms), actions, and manners of these artistic skills, but also bring devotion to ceaseless pursuit of perfect beauty without end.
This time, we at ANA focus on introducing the ways of Japanese traditional martial arts and performing/fine arts — legacies accumulated over long eras
and inherited by many artists from ancient times to the present. We want to help pass along these intangible cultural assets to new generations in a “tangible” manner.

All about Sado in Winter | Japan Travel Guide
More information about Sado:
- Geography
Sado is located in the Sea of Japan and is a part of Niigata Prefecture. The island is 855 km2(330 mile2)in area which is bigger than the 23 wards of Tokyo(621 km2 = 240 mile2)and the country of Bahrain(758 km2 = 293 mile2)which is ranked 184th in the world. The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.
- Landmarks
Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.
- Food
The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.
- Accommodations
Accommodations around Ryotsu Port are convenient on the first day. Aikawa and Mano which are located in the center of the island are also great as starting points for sightseeing.
