River Canoe and Safari in Livingstone, Zambia
Day 197 of It's my Life 365 and I'm still in Livingstone, Zambia. I've started to get really comfortable in Livingstone and it's actually a little bit hard to leave these days. I think I probably have a week left here before I really have to move on south and get myself to Cape Town.
On this episode, I start off the day with a river canoe trip down the Zambezi River which was absolutely phenomenal. It was relaxed and a great way to spend the morning. In the afternoon, I went on a bit of a safari in one of the small national parks just outside of Livingstone. In the evening, it was another booze cruise, and some late night partying in Livingstone. This town is amazing, and I'm going to have a hard time leaving it.

Safari in Zambia’s South Luangwa
South Luangwa is Zambia’s premier wildlife destination, is home to some of Africa’s best walking safaris, and can easily be combined with a trip to Victoria Falls.
Most safari lodges in South Luangwa National Park are located on the banks of the abundant Luangwa River and there is a range of accommodation types to choose from. Whether you prefer to be in the lap of luxury at a permanent lodge, go on a mobile camping adventure, or combine the two, you will be well cared for by highly skilled game rangers and welcoming hosts. You will also be able to experience the wide range of activities on offer in South Luangwa including traditional 4x4 game drives, water-based game viewing on kayaks and boats, fishing and of course, thrilling walking safaris.
Mobile camps in South Luangwa comprise fully-furnished safari tents set up in remote locations. You may have to forgo some modern luxuries like Wi-Fi and air conditioning, but you will be rewarded with one of the most authentic experiences Africa has to offer.
After a night or two on a mobile camping adventure, check into a permanent luxury lodge like those featured in the video:
Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp – part of the prestigious Sanctuary Retreats Collection, this comfortable lodge is eco-friendly and offers beautiful views over the floodplains
Nkwali – this lodge has a prime game viewing location which means that elephants and other wildlife are frequently spotted from the comfort of camp.
Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge – formerly a presidential hideaway, this lodge offers beautiful views of the South Luangwa and charming Victorian-style cottages.
Kaingo Camp – an owner-run and down-to-earth lodge that offers three safari activities each day, as well as an opportunity of visiting wildlife hides, and even sleeping out in their elephant hide.
Mfuwe Lodge – well-known for the elephants who often walk through the reception hall of the lodge! (This video also features an adorable elephant calf climbing up a small flight of stairs for the first time!)

Walking Lions in Livingstone, Zambia
The adventure continues in Livingstone, Zambia here again. Today's mission was to go walking some lions at what they call the lion encounter here in Zambia. Basically, at this program in Livingstone, they raise orphaned lions and train them to be a part of a pride. Part of that process is walking the lions, to make them feel a part of a pride, even if it's an unnatural one.
Though there are some contentions to the ethics of the lion encounters, with certain animal rights people saying that these lions are essentially just trained to be moved into wildlife reserves where they are often hunted for game, the process does seem legit. Regardless, walking lions is a powerful experience. You see just how beautiful these animals are in person. You also see how powerful they are. Even though the lions we walk are just cubs, I'm positive they could rip us to shreds if they wanted to.
If you're interested in doing the lion encounter in Livingstone, Zambia contact the people at Jollyboys, they will hook you up.

Kafue National Park - Zambia Tourism
Found in the centre of western Zambia, Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest of Zambia’s national parks. It covers a massive 22,400 km2.
First established as a National Park in the 1950’s by the legendary Norman Carr, Kafue is one of the largest national parks in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location only two hours drive from Livingstone, it remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched. Thanks to its size and variety of habitat types the Kafue holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife.
In recent years the Park has seen a well-managed growth in the number of Safari Camps and Lodges that operate in and around the Park. This new interest has brought with it more visitors and investment to the area, notably in infrastructure with a number of well-graded roads and airstrips.
As a consequence of the increasing interest and benefits in terms of investment this brings, the wildlife is beginning to enjoy an increased level of protection by the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), always aided and supported by the operators in and adjoining the park.

10 Awesome Things to Do in ZAMBIA
The country of Zambia in the southern region of Africa is the perfect destination for nature lovers. If you want to venture off to a place that has everything, from a rich history to friendly villagers and diverse wildlife, Zambia has you covered. Here are 10 things to Do in Zambia.
1. Visit Victoria Falls
Mosi-oa-Tunya, also known as Victoria Falls, is a stunning waterfall that’s located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border. It is one of the largest waterfalls in the world with over 500 million liters of water.
2. Take a Walking Safari
South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking tours and the one place where you’ll be most likely to come in contact with a lion. When the tour is finished, grab and tent and enjoy some restful and peaceful sleep in the middle of the wilderness.
3. Visit a Traditional Village
Zambia has over 73 tribes. And, a tour of the Kawaza Village near South Luangwa includes helping the villagers to harvest crops and draw water from their wells before enjoying a traditional feast. ,
4. Volunteer at the Lion Conservation
This center is home to a number of lions that have been orphaned, abandoned, or abused. The sanctuary allows visitors to take care of them, prepare their meals, feed them, clean their enclosures, and assist them with veterinary care.
5. Go on a Game Drive
Along the Luangwa River, jeep tours will get you up close and personal to some of Zambia’s dazzling wildlife. On these game drives, the vehicles make it easier to get closer to a higher density of animals.
6. Visit Chobe National Park
It's along the border of Zambia. Guided tours are available via vehicle. Open-air trucks will take you to the park’s river where you can witness elephants swimming, playing, and bathing together, or you can book a boat ride through the park.
7. Enjoy High Tea
Enjoy high tea with an amazing view at the luxurious Royal Livingstone Hotel. This five-star accommodation overlooks the Zambezi river where hippopotamuses and zebras frequently graze in the distance.
8. Canoe Ride in Lower Zambezi National Park
This Park is known for its fish eagles, elephants, and buffalo, but it’s also a great spot to go for a relaxing canoe ride. The river is lined with fig trees and if you’re lucky, you might even see a leopard taking a drink on the edge of the river as you paddle by!
9. Swim in Devil’s Pool
During the dry season, the levels of the Zambezi River drop low enough for you to walk to the lip of the falls. Fearless travelers get pushed to the edge by the force of the river, but the rock lip prevents them from going over the edge.
10. View Rare Species in Bangweulu Wetlands
If you really want to take pictures that will amaze all of your friends and family back home, you’ll definitely want to head out to the Bangweulu Wetlands. This community-owned wetland has over 433 different bird species, including the rare shoebill.
