Firing Class 12AR Locomotive in Germiston, South Africa
The Class 12A/12AR 4-8-2 was the final locomotive design by D.A. Hendrie, Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the South African Railways (SAR) from 1910 to 1922, and one of his finest. It was an improved and larger version of his Class 12 locomotive, with larger diameter cylinders to increase tractive effort and a redesigned boiler.
Between 1919 and 1929, altogether 67 of them were built on five orders, 48 by the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) in Scotland and 19 by Henschel and Son in Kassel, Germany.

South African Steam Safari 1989 Kei Explorer
Here are a few clips taken aboard the 16 day 1989 steam safari around South Africa. Many different locomotives were used and enthusiasts from all over the world flew out to SA to travel on this train. These trains were to become a massive tourist attraction in the 1990s but sadly died due to lack of interest in the 21st century due to lack of interest from the now South African Railway system. One thing that was always great on these tours was the last evening dinner where the staff would sit down and the passengers would serve them dinner. It was a massive party with loads of banter etc as will be seen in the clip.

Kruger National Park voller Löwen | SAFARI Tag 3
Seht selbst ;)

Class 12AR Locomotive leaving Magaliesburg, South Africa
The South African Railways Class 12A 4-8-2 of 1919 was a steam locomotive.
Between 1919 and 1929, the South African Railways placed 67 Class 12A steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain type wheel arrangement in service. Between 1947 and 1953, eight were also built for industrial use.
Vale John Gilberthorpe - Germiston 89
In 1989 I spent some weeks in South Africa, with every spare minute chasing steam with my 'video 8' camera. On a weekday afternoon I walked into Germiston depot and within minutes was in the cab of a 15f with John Gilberthorpe and Richard Niven. What an amazing pair of engine men and what a grand time it was riding on their footplate!
This clip is of three opportunities I had to ride with them around Germiston on various shunts (unedited). Gotta love John's 'hat'...
Class 25NC thrashes through the Witteberge, Eastern Free State, South Africa
Class 25NC locomotive was one of the most successful South African Railways locomotives. Between 1953 and 1955, the South African Railways placed fifty Class 25NC steam locomotives with a 4-8-4 Northern type wheel arrangement in service. The Class 25NC was the non-condensing version of the Class 25 condensing locomotive, of which ninety were placed in service at the same time. Between 1973 and 1980, all but three of the condensing locomotives were converted to non-condensing and also designated Class 25NC. THIS ONE WAS ONE OF THEM!
The Class 25NC initially served on the unelectrified mainlines from De Aar via Kimberley to Welverdiend. They were pooled from their introduction and were run through from De Aar to Welverdiend and vice versa, recoaling at Warrenton. After electrification was extended from Welverdiend to Klerksdorp, they ran from there to De Aar, still recoaling at Warrenton. Later they also worked from Kimberley via Bloemfontein to Harrismith in the Free State while some joined the Class 25 condensers on the line from De Aar via Beaufort West to Touws River.[3][11]
When the line south from De Aar was dieselised between 1973 and 1974, the Class 25 condensers working there were moved north to work the section from De Aar to Kimberley, where they replaced twenty-two Class 25NCs which were then relocated to Bethlehem in the Free State (this video is on the Bethlehem-Bloemfontein line). From 1982, Class 25NCs also replaced Class 19Ds and Class GMAM Garratts on the line from Warrenton via Vryburg to Mafeking.

South Africa Locomotives: Country's steam train tourism sector slowly growing
Driven by nostalgia, the steam train tourism sector in South Africa is slowly growing. Visitors and enthusiasts get to enjoy the South African landscape, quite literally, in the slow lane. One particular business uses old steam engines to send farm produce to Cape Town harbour, as CGTN's Alexandria Majalla, now explains.
