A safari park, sometimes known as a wildlife park, is a zoo-like commercial drive-in tourist attraction where visitors can drive their own vehicles or ride in vehicles provided by the facility to observe freely roaming animals. The main attractions are frequently large animals from Sub-Saharan Africa such as giraffes, lions, rhinoceros, elephants, hippopotamus, zebras, ostriches, and antelope. A safari park is larger than a zoo and smaller than a game reserve. For example, African Lion Safari in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada is 750 acres . For comparison, Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya, is 168 square kilometres , and a typical large game reserve is Tsavo East, also in Kenya, which encompasses 11,747 square kilometres . Safari parks often have other associated tourist attractions: golf courses, carnival rides, cafes/restaurants, ridable miniature railways, and gift shops.

Located in the Great Rift Valley, Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake where both lesser and flamingos can be found in vast numbers, sometimes literally turning the water pink.
The lake varies in size from five to 30 square kilometres – depending on rainfall – and is rich in birdlife; there are 400 resident species on the lake and in the surrounding national park. Thousands of little grebes and white-winged black terns are frequently seen, as are black-winged stilts, pelicans, cormorants, avocets, ducks and – in the European winter – many migrant waders.

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park.

The lake's abundance of algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. Other birds also flourish in the area, as do warthogs, baboons and other large mammals. Eastern black rhinos and southern white rhinos have also been introduced.

The lake's level dropped dramatically in the early 1990s but has since largely recovered. In 2013, the lake received an alarming increase in the water levels that led to the migration of flamingos to Lake Bogoria in search for food supply.

Nakuru means Dust or Dusty Place in the Maasai language. Lake Nakuru National Park, close to Nakuru town, was established in 1961. It started off small, only encompassing the famous lake and the surrounding mountainous vicinity, but has since been extended to include a large part of the savannahs.

Your safari begins at Amboseli National Park. With its views of stunning Mt. Kilimanjaro, the park’s big game of lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo are all yours to explore. The multiple game drives here will bring you in the vicinity of impala, giraffe, wildebeest and possibly cheetah.

Moving on to the great Rift Valley, you’ll enter Lake Naivasha. Here you’ll take a water safari, sailing past hippos and enjoying views of the abundant birdlife populating this freshwater lake. Look out for the giraffe and zebra on the nearby shore.

Then, at nearby Crescent Island, you’ll be treated to a guided walking safari. Casually hike by impala, giraffe, zebra and other small game as they graze.

If you wish you may take an optional bicycle safari at Hell’s Gate National Park,. Have fun pedaling by the grazing gazelle, antelope and giraffe. This is definitely a story you can take back home!

Then we’re off to Lake Nakuru National Park where we’ll encounter black & white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffe, hippo, and look out for lions and leopards. This is a beautiful park adorned with swaths of acacia trees. There is plentiful birdlife here as well. And sightings of flamingos are not uncommon. So get your camera ready!

The big finale of your adventure tour is at the king of safari destinations – the Masai Mara. The world-famous Mara is rich with a vast display of wildlife. You’ll enjoy numerous game drives during your days here to view the Big Five as well as smaller game.

The Mara is a stunning eco-system with its vast savannah, accented with acacia trees. If you wish, as a special addition, you can arrange with your guide to visit a Masai village and meet the people still living their traditional lifestyle. The wildlife of Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

The park is famous for the large population of flamingos that gather on the lake (see my other film on birdlife) but also because it provides sanctuary to both black and white rhino.

There were a few filming firsts for me on this trip – a male lion in a tree, rhino fighting, dung beetles doing their stuff and me playing hide and seek with baboons. A stand out moment was witnessing for the first time, and filming, male Rothschild’s giraffe “necking”. This is a ritual among male bull giraffes where they swing their heads in wide arches to try to hit one another with the hard bony ossicles - bumps - on the tops of their heads.

This footage was captured three years before my hero the great DA included similar in the series Africa for the BBC ☺

Our safari continues to Lake Nakuru National Park. This is a jewel in Kenya’s park system with lions, leopards, hippos and rare Rothschild’s giraffes. It’s also home to flamingos, pelicans and innumerable bird species.

There are even more flamingos to be seen at Lake Bogoria and we’ll visit there if you wish.

But perhaps the most unique attraction at Lake Nakuru Park are the endangered black & white rhinos. During your visit here, you are guaranteed viewings of both species.

We’ve saved the biggest for last. Our final safari stop is at world-renowned Masai Mara game reserve. The Mara is a place of vast grasslands, dotted with signature acacia trees. Here you’ll find thousands of wildebeests, zebras and many other species marching across this famous plain.

There will be lots of game drives for you to spot the Big Five, plus many other wildlife, during your 4 days and 3 night stay here.

This was a clip which was taken in Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya. We saw millions of flamingo's around the lake. Lake Nakuru National park is one of the few lakes that is home to different species of Birds but the dominants are Lesser and Greater flamingos. The park also has animals including the White rhino, buffaloes, water backs and many more. The game was done by Claude.

Dik-Dik And The Python, Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

In May, 2011, we were on safari in Kenya. While at Lake Nakuru National Park, near Baboon Hill Outlook, we saw a Dik-Dik, the smallest antelope, acting very strangely. We saw movement in the grass near the Dik-Dik and finally saw what had the animal so agitated - a 2 meter long python. The encounter was one of the strangest animal encounters we've ever seen.(Sorry, I say 2 foot long python on the video - my mistake!)
