Evac to Zama
The history of U.S. Army Hospital Camp Zama, which was located in Sagami-ono, about 25 miles southwest of Tokyo. Officially designated a general hospital in 1965, the 700-bed facility was the primary Army hospital in Japan and treated an estimated 31,500 wounded soldiers during the Vietnam War. The sprawling complex closed in November 1979 and was replaced by a huge department store, municipal park and apartment buildings.

USARJ Band Sagami Groove Concert
The U.S. Army Japan Band’s Sagami Groove and Kanto Jazz groups put on a concert Jan. 29 for the local community at Sagamihara Minami Civic Hall near Camp Zama.
Sagami General Depot - The War Years
Rare archival film of Sagami General Depot through a turbulent half-century. Located 25 miles southwest of Tokyo in the city of Sagamihara, Sagami General Depot occupies a former Japanese Imperial Army installation called Sagami Army Arsenal, which served as a principal tank and munitions factory since 1938. During World War II, the factory produced more than 1,500 battle tanks. In September 1945, Sagami was occupied by the U.S. Army's 5th Cavalry Regiment. After the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 it was designated Yokohama Engineer Depot as part of U.S. Army Garrison Japan at Camp Zama, and the still-standing factory was used to refurbish battle-damaged tanks and vehicles for return to service in Korea. That mission continued throughout the Vietnam War when it was redesignated Sagami Supply & Maintenance Depot and eventually Sagami General Depot. Sagami General Depot became a flashpoint for numerous anti-war protests until war's end in 1975. The depot continues to serve as a logistical and supply depot as well as a training center. It also serves as a ballistic missile defense command base, prompting renewed protests. In 2015, the U.S. Army returned approximately 42 acres of Sagami General Depot's 550 acres, including a small housing area, with a commitment to return an additional 86 acres for joint use. The Japanese government and city of Sagamihara have designated the reverted land for urban development, a sprawling sports complex, a new train terminal for the Odakyu Tama Line, and open space.

Our Initial Outfitting and Transition (IO&T) Program at the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville provides transition support with services that can provide everything needed to meet the mission on first patient day — the equipment and, just as important, the complete clinical operation planning to ensure smooth processes to support the patient delivery model in a world-class facility for the war fighters and their families.
Japan Women's Association
Members of the Japan Women's Association recently visited Camp Zama to bestow a gift of thousands of origami cranes to U.S. Army Japan representatives. The gesture was done in appreciation of USARJ's efforts during Operation Tomodachi.

First U.S.-Japan joint field drill 2019
Emergency services personnel from the Kanagawa Prefecture Police, South Kanto Defense Bureau, Kanagawa Prefectural Government, Zama City, and U.S. Army Garrison Japan recently conducted the first ever U.S.-Japan Joint field drill, based on U.S.-Japan guidelines regarding off-base U.S. military aircraft accidents in Japan, at the bed of the Sagami River near Camp Zama.

History of Camp Zama
Camp Zama is known today as the home of U.S. Army Japan and I Corps Forward. But the installation was also the former site of the Japanese Imperial Army officers’ school. Retired Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Lt. Gen. Masao Horie was among the 426 cadets of the first class to graduate in 1937. Horie tells us about school life as he walk with us the installation.
