Most Comfortable Gangasagar Trip by Launch - Howrah to Sagar Island - West Bengal Pilgrim Tourism
The most comfortable trip to Gangasagar mela is organized by Hooghly Nadi Jalapath Paribahan Samabay Samity Limited by launch from Howrah Station Jetty to Sagar Island. The pilgrims going with them are given VIP treatment. Their launch is anchored at seperate jetty namely R C Jetty at Kachuberai. Seperate bus arrangements are
provided for the pilgrims. A special camp is set up for these pilgrims for the night stay. Cost of this package is only rupee 3500/= (rupees three thousand five hundred only as of 2016). The package includes fooding and drinking water also.Pilgrims come every year at the Ganga Sagar Mela which considered the largest fair of West Bengal. Nearly 5 lakh pilgrims from all over India arrive here at the Sagar Island on or before Makar Sankranti or Poush Sankranti (The last day of the Bengali month Poush which is mid of January) to take holy bathing at the confluence of the Ganges River and Bay of Bengal. The fair actually takes place at the Sagar Dweep (Dweep means Island) of North 24 Pargana, West Bengal, India.

Sagar island is an island in the Ganges delta, lying on the continental shelf of Bay of Bengal about 100 km (54 nautical miles) south of Kolkata.This Island under South 24 Parganas District in India State West Bengal. It belongs to the Republic of India and is governed by the State government of West Bengal. The island is large — with an area of 224.3 km², lying between 21°36’ to 21°56’ north latitude and 88°2’ to 88° 11’ east latitude.[1] It has 43 villages and a population of over 160,000.[2] The largest village is also named Ganga Sagar or Gangasagar.[1] Although Sagar island is a part of Sunderban Administration, it does not have any tiger habitation or mangrove forests or small river tributaries as is characteristic of the overall sunderban delta.
West Bengal: Six Die In ‘Stampede’ At Ganga Sagar Mela
Six elderly women died at the annual Ganga Sagar Mela — one of West Bengal’s biggest religious fairs — at Kochuberia in South 24 Parganas district on Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, the pilgrims died in a stampede at the Kochuberia jetty where a crowd was waiting to board a boat.
