Saguenay–Lac-St-Jean Route | QuébecOriginal and Go-Van
The Saguenay‒Lac-Saint-Jean region seemed like the perfect place for two Vancouver photographers to discover the great outdoors of Québec. That's what prompted Julien Roussin-Côté of the Go-Van blog to invite Kyla Trethewey and Jillian Mann of the Our Wild Abandon blog to “Bleuet” (Blueberry) Country, the nickname given to the people of the region.

Saguenay Fjord - Quebec travel
A beautiful cruise around the Saguenay Fjord National Park - Parc National du Fjord-du-Saguenay.
Aboriginals have inhabited the Saguenay Fjord area for thousands of years prior to the first Europeans arriving. The first European to visit the area was Jacques Cartier, in 1535. Between 1628 and 1842, the Saguenay economy was heavily dependent on the fur trade.
In 1838, settlers began moving into the Saguenay region. Between 1840 and 1920, the region had a sizable lumber industry. By the end of the 19th, much of the forests around the Saguenay River were depleted. In addition to the depletion of the forests, difficult terrain and the decline of the lumber industry led to the Saguenay area remaining mostly undeveloped into the 20th century.
Starting in 1970, the Quebec government began acquiring land around the fjord in hopes of protecting it. In 1982, the government held public on the park's design and boundaries. Saguenay National Park was officially created on June 8, 1983. In 1984, the park was twinned with France's Cévennes National Park. In 1991, facilities were added to the Baie du Moulin-à-Baude section, while in 2000, facilities were added to the Baie-Sainte-Marguerite section.
On April 20, 2011, the park changed its name from Saguenay National Park to Saguenay Fjord National Park in order to emphasize the fjord's distinctiveness of being one the most southerly fjords in the world.

Family Travel with Colleen Kelly - Saguenay Lac St. Jean, Canada
A short drive from Quebec City, Canada, is Saguenay-Lac-St. Jean, a beautiful region in the Quebec Province that offers majestic views and fun for the whole family. Colleen Kelly and her children start by getting up close and personal with whales, by taking a boat tour of the magical area where the St Lawrence River and the Saguenay Fjord meet. After visiting the Fjord, the whales’ “playground,” Colleen and the girls go to the Fjord Museum to literally dig in and learn more about the environment. They also go on their first hands-on sailing adventure and soar through the trees on a daring ropes course at Cap Jaseux.
The vacation continues with a step back in time at the Historic Village de Val-Jalbert, where presenters in period costumes explain what life was like in the area during the 1920’s. A behind-the-scenes experience at the Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Felicien allows Colleen and the children to be zookeepers for the day, which includes weighing a camel and preparing food for the animals. It’s a vacation full of breathtaking scenery and unique adventures for the whole family.

Saguenay Fjord
The Saguenay Fjord is more than 100 km in length, extending inland from Tadoussac to the tidal estuary of the Saguenay River around Chicoutimi. Glaciers exploited an ancient fault zone and gouged a fjord with deep sides. Whales come close to shore at Tadoussac, Ocean-going ships can reach deep inland. This video rounds up footage shot over the Thanksgiving Weekend of Oct 10-14 2014 from various locations on the western end of the fjord, Including Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, La Baie des Ha! Ha!, Chicoutimi and elsewhere.
