Great Canadian Parks #5- Saguenay St. Marine Park, Qc
The unusual geology of this region creates a striking system of pools and waterways that create one of the world's richest feeding grounds for whales. The area is home to fin, minke, beluga, blue and sometimes even humpback or sperm whales. Learn more about belugas from scientists who study this gentle mammal in an effort to save this endangered species.

The Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park is a National Marine Conservation Area, one of three in the Canadian national park system, located where the Saguenay River meets the Saint Lawrence River. It is the first national park in Québec to protect a purely marine environment. Whales are drawn to the rich food supply stirred up by the mixing of waters here, including a colony of belugas.
This park is co-managed by Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq) and Parks Canada.

Saguenay Fjord
The Saguenay Fjord is more than 100 km in length, extending inland from Tadoussac to the tidal estuary of the Saguenay River around Chicoutimi. Glaciers exploited an ancient fault zone and gouged a fjord with deep sides. Whales come close to shore at Tadoussac, Ocean-going ships can reach deep inland. This video rounds up footage shot over the Thanksgiving Weekend of Oct 10-14 2014 from various locations on the western end of the fjord, Including Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, La Baie des Ha! Ha!, Chicoutimi and elsewhere.

Ep2: Operation Unplugged visits Saguenay-St.Lawrence Marine Park
An area to discover in depth! Since its creation in 1998, the marine park has worked to protect and present the marine environment of a section St. Lawrence Estuary and the Saguenay Fjord. With a surface area of 1 245 km2, this large ecosystem is unique because of its sea bottom topography and its fjord . The confluence of waters of the St. Lawrence Estuary with those of the Saguenay Fjord creates exceptional oceanographic phenomena promoting significant biological diversity . Five cetacean species inhabit the waters of the marine park, including the St. Lawrence beluga, a protected species. In all, more than fifteen species of marine mammals have been reported, which bears witness to the marine park's ecological significance.
As well, the area surrounding the Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park has a long history of human inhabitation and is a place of importance in North American history. On this land, Amerindian and European civilizations came into contact, a contact that made a lasting impact.

Saguenay Fjord - Quebec travel
A beautiful cruise around the Saguenay Fjord National Park - Parc National du Fjord-du-Saguenay.
Aboriginals have inhabited the Saguenay Fjord area for thousands of years prior to the first Europeans arriving. The first European to visit the area was Jacques Cartier, in 1535. Between 1628 and 1842, the Saguenay economy was heavily dependent on the fur trade.
In 1838, settlers began moving into the Saguenay region. Between 1840 and 1920, the region had a sizable lumber industry. By the end of the 19th, much of the forests around the Saguenay River were depleted. In addition to the depletion of the forests, difficult terrain and the decline of the lumber industry led to the Saguenay area remaining mostly undeveloped into the 20th century.
Starting in 1970, the Quebec government began acquiring land around the fjord in hopes of protecting it. In 1982, the government held public on the park's design and boundaries. Saguenay National Park was officially created on June 8, 1983. In 1984, the park was twinned with France's Cévennes National Park. In 1991, facilities were added to the Baie du Moulin-à-Baude section, while in 2000, facilities were added to the Baie-Sainte-Marguerite section.
On April 20, 2011, the park changed its name from Saguenay National Park to Saguenay Fjord National Park in order to emphasize the fjord's distinctiveness of being one the most southerly fjords in the world.

Rugged Quiet Beauty: A Travel Spotlight on Saguenay, Quebec
Québec's rugged grandeur -- or what we mostly think of when it comes to Canada -- is unforgettable. Tall lumbering trees, shimmery rivers, and a quiet beauty that only nature can whisper to its visitors. Created by a glacier from the Ice Age, the Saguenay Fjord (pronounced sag-uh-nay fee-yord) is what brings you into the Saguenay region. It quickly puts you under its tranquil spell and surprises you with the warmth and friendliness of the locals who are so passionate to tell you about their hometown.
