Sahasralinga: 1000's of Shivalingam on Shalmala river, Sirsi, Uttarkanada, Karnataka. India
Follow Instagram:
In 2015, due to dry weather, the water level of the #Shalmala river in Karnataka receded, revealing the presence of thousands of Shiva Lingas carved throughout the #river bed. Because of these uncountable carvings, the place gets the name #Sahasralinga (thousand Shiva Lingas).
During #Shivratri, thousands of pilgrims visit this place and offer pujas, a perfect time when the water level in the river is low and most of the Lingas are visible. Each Linga also has an individual bull carved facing towards them.
No one really knows when or who carved these Lingas but it is speculated that the King of Sirsi, Sadashivaraya may have ordered their construction during his reign from 1678 to 1718. #mahadev_shiv_shambo
It is believed that the 1001 #Shivalinga's are carved by the King #Sadhashivaraya, who was childless for many years. He was worshipper of #LordShiva. He had made a vow to carve 1001 Shivalingas. Hence the name Sahasralinga was originated and 1001 lingas were created on the bank of Shalmali river.
It is located in the midst of the heavenly lavish green nature, near to Sirsi, #Uttarakannada district, Karnataka and you shouldn't miss out visiting here.
Sahasralinga near Sirsi, Uttara Kannada District
A forest brook flows by stones carved into Lingas.......accesible by road via Ellapur/ Sirsi. Very serene. There is a hanging bridge from where one can't see the Lingas; if one climbs down a few uneven steps, one can reach the water near the lingas. Copyright of the songs selected rests with the respective companies. Hope this motivates you to visit the place!

Sahasra Linga near Swadi, Sirsi
This is a river where a thousand Lingas are carved out of Rocks lying on the river bed. If not really a thousand, i could see a lot of them in a small stretch. They say such carved rocks are present over a bigger area and may amount to a thousand of them.
This was in April, mid of summer, so the water level and flow is on the lower side. During monsoon, the river level raises leaving only the Lingas and Basavanna in front of it visible above the water surface and makes a prettier picture.
