This painting will be sold to aid the plight of the Palestinian people.

I chose to paint this building because of the peaceful blue from the pool, from which the madrasa gets its name. A peace that dates back to the age of an empire of wealth, knowledge, and coexistence throughout the Muslim world.

A peace that many yearn for today.

My name is Aatif Syed, I'm 17, and am studying my A-levels in Birmingham, UK. I don't paint often, but when I do, its for auction, so forgive any lapses in skill.

Fez • within the maze •

The Medina in Fes, it dates back to the year 859 and there are no cars allowed inside the city walls – it is also the only Medina that isn’t flat – it’s shaped like a bowl – so you need to be prepared for some very steep hills around the edges.

It is, as you would expect, beautiful. As much as I love to take pictures, this is the kind of place that you need to use all of your senses in .

Centuries-old colleges once again taking students

Previously abandoned institutions in central Fes are being given a new lease of life.
These places of learning, called madrasas, have begun taking in students from the world's oldest university.
STORYLINE:
Intricate plasterwork greets visitors at the entrance to this madrasa.
It is one of the centuries-old religious schools in Fes which are thriving once again.
Their renaissance is an integral part of a large-scale restoration of the city's ancient medina.
Most of these schools were founded in late 13th century to teach Islamic studies, Arabic literature, astronomy and mathematics.
But with the establishment of modern universities, they gradually lost their place, and many of them were closed.
But now five prestigious institutions are being given a new lease of life.
The schools will provide a total of 105 beds for undergraduates coming from other cities in Morocco as well as from abroad.
Mohamed Mahmoud Diallo from Senegal is a 28 year-old student following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who both studied at Al Qarawiyine University.
My ancestors graduated from this university, he explains.
I managed to follow in their footsteps and when I arrived here, I found the conditions to be as perfect as we'd heard, he says.
Teaching here is different from modern universities because we follow the old system, he adds.
More than four million US dollars have gone into restoring these schools, under the instruction of King Mohammed VI.
Out of the five restored madrasas, three of them will accommodate students of Al Qarawiyine University, which is considered by UNESCO as the oldest continuously operating degree-granting university in the world.
It was founded in 859 AD by a devout Muslim woman called Fatima Al-Fihriya.
For centuries it has attracted scholars and students from the Arab world and from sub-Saharan Muslim countries as well as students from all over Morocco.
Mustapha Bekkali Hraiki is a 27 year-old student from Chefchaouen studying for the Al Alimiya, the equivalent of a Masters degree in Islamic Studies.
He studies and lives in the Mohammedia Madrasa.
My choice for these particular studies was dictated by this venerable institution that offers excellent scientific teachings, he explains.
I chose this discipline to achieve my ambition of combining religious studies with modern ones, he says.
Funded by charitable endowments, madrasas offer their students free tuition and dormitories.
Students receive free accommodation and a monthly grant of 200 US dollars.
23 year-old Abderrahman Boughnaim from Tangier is on the same course as Mustapha Bekkali Hraiki.
The teaching conditions are excellent, he explains.
There is a mix of modernity and authenticity, he says.
As far as my future is concerned, I expect the best with the help of Allah, he adds.
Abdellatif El Alami runs the Mohammedia madrasa.
For him, providing a broad education is a central mission of the school.
These students have six hours of French and six hours of English on top of some ancient languages such as Latin and Greek, he explains.
The aim is to have an open-minded scholar able to address the world, he says.
According to the Royal instructions, two of the restored schools, the Sbaiyyine and the Sahrij Madrasas, have been reserved for students enrolled in the Moroccan Calligraphy Department of Al Qarawiyin.
In this peaceful setting, students can practise the ancient writing art.

Medersa Bou Inania à Meknès

C’est sous le règne du sultan Abû Hasan de la dynastie des Mérinides, que débutèrent les travaux de la Medersa Bou Inania à Meknès en 1331. La construction ne sera achevée qu’en 1351, sous le règne de Abû Inân Fâris al-Mutawakkil. Ecole coranique, dotée de vingt-six chambres ou “cellules” d’étudiants, elle fût utilisée jusqu’en 1964. Elle se situe au centre de la Médina de Meknès.
Symbole d’élégance orientale, la Médersa Bou Inania est finement décorée de mosaïques de faïences émaillées et de gypse, de calligraphies de stuc et de bois, sans oublier de somptueux plafonds en bois de cèdre sculpté.
Sa cour centrale, avec vue sur le premier étage, et notamment, sur les minuscules petites portes de bois des chambres, contraste beaucoup avec la beauté grandiose et gigantesque du reste des lieux… Une petite particularité pour cet édifice, la place de l’Imam a été creusée dans le mur. Il est possible d’accéder au toit, duquel vous pourrez admirer les tuiles vertes du minaret de la grande mosquée et une vue panoramique sur la Médina de Meknès…

#04 Meknes & Volubilis

Visiting Morocco is a once in a lifetime experience!

Mekness has great architectural heritage on display in its medina, ancient granaries, beautiful mausoleum and palaces. Volubilis, near Meknes, is the biggest archaeological site in Morocco. It has some well preserved mosaics, columns and statues from the Roman period. In Ouarzazate, one visit to the studios and you’ll be convinced why it has become such a great spot for film production. In Dades, Todra and Ziz valleys, you can truly experience the “oasis” and walk among the apple, pomegranate and date palm orchards.

The Meknes medina, garnished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, holds many treasures within its walls. The first one can be admired even before you enter the imperial city: Bab Mansour. This incredible gate (bab in Arabic) is not only a spectacular example of Almohad architecture but it also holds a unique story behind its construction.

Volubilis is not just a town in Morocco, but rather a set of Roman ruins situated near Moulay Idriss and outside of Meknes. The spot was probably chosen for its rich soil that would reap abundant crops, especially olives.

Volubilis is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Morocco and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997. The most interesting artifacts of Volubilis are the mosaics which have survived time.

When traveling around Meknes, a jaunt to Volubilis makes the perfect day trip. While en route, stop by the small, yet lively town of Moulay Idriss.

During an archaeological excavation of the site, it was determined the settlement was the remnants of Carthaginian traders dating to the 3rd century BC. It is still considered one of the Roman Empire’s most remote outposts. Volubilis was annexed in 40AD. It is thought that the Romans had strict control on what could or could not be produced in this North African region. The production was often based on what the empire decided they needed; part of this control contributed to the vast deforestation of the region due to the planting of wheat.

The sites at Volubilis include some of the most well known monuments in the northern section of Africa. You will need to head to Oued Fertessa first. You can then take a path from there to the residential quarter of one of the buildings. The team found olive presses buried in this area, which you can see on your tour. Next to the presses are the remains of a female skeleton. She is thought to be Muslim because she was buried facing Mecca. She is entombed in the wall and covered with an iron sheet to make sure she will remain in peace.

From this area it is possible to reach Galen’s Baths, which are next to the house of Orpheus. The baths are just ruins now, but it is fun to imagine what the baths used to look like centuries ago. It especially shows the under floor heating system that was used in Roman times. The Capitol and Basilica will just about end your tour. The capitol is indicated by the Triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. This dates back to 218. The last thing to see is the Mosaics at the house of Acrobat.
