Saijo Brewery Street, the Birthplace of Japanese Sake
The neighborhood of Saijo Station in Higashi Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture contains several breweries, and is called the birthplace of Japanese rice wine. The breweries are concentrated on Saijo Brewery Street, and it is a popular spot for visitors from both Japan and overseas. You can actually sample the Japanese rice wines produced here.

Kamotsuru Shuzo Brewery in Saijo, Higashi Hiroshima CIty
Kamotsuru Shuzo Brewery is the largest leading Hiroshima sake brewery in the home of Japanese sake, Saijo city. This brewery was established in 1873 is known as one of the first breweries to brew Daiginjo in Japan. Daiginjo is a type of sake brewed with white rice whose polishing ratio is over 50 %. Finely polished rice increases the portion of lees and creates bright fruity aroma.
This brewery has introduced advanced technologies since its foundation and continued traditional sake brewing.
西条 酒祭り Saijo Sake Festival JAPAN
Every year for just one weekend the town of Saijo comes alive for its famous sake festival. Saijo, a well known brewery town since around 1650, has 10 traditional breweries.
Festival weekend sees the road from the station lined with food stalls leading to Chuo park which is split into East and West. The East side has stalls, food, stages and performances with free entry. The West side of the park is where you can get to taste over 900 different types of Japan?s finest sake. Entrance requires a ticket . On entry you are handed your own sake cup which can be refill at any of the stands for up to 9 hours.
The relaxed and lighthearted atmosphere of the festival is almost as good as the sake itself and makes a great day out.
Within the narrow streets of the Sakagura Dori area near JR Saijō Station are the Namako wall (white-lattice walled) and Sekishu Gawara (red-roof tile) roofs of nine well-known sake breweries; Fukubijin 福美人酒造株式会社, Hakubotan 白牡丹酒造株式会社, Kamoki 賀茂輝酒造株式会社, Kamoizumi 賀茂泉酒造株式会社, Kamotsuru 賀茂鶴酒造株式会社, Kirei 亀齢酒造株式会社, Saijotsuru 西條鶴醸造株式会社, Sakurafubuki 金光酒造合資会社, and Sanyotsuru 山 陽鶴酒造株式会社.
