Saijo Inari - our first GOSHUIN of REIWA
Saijo Inari is where Arisa and I went to get our first goshuin (temple seal) of the new era, Reiwa.
Saijo Inari is located in Okayama, Japan and is one of the top 3 Inari Shrine/Temples in Japan. It is a bit unique because it has a Torii gate, which is usually reserved for shrines, but it is a temple.
I usually go here every first of the year as well and it really is a special place to me and Arisa.

▼What is Saijo Inari Temple?
The official name of the temple is “Saijo Inari-san Myokyo-ji.” Because torii are symbols of shrines, the torii at Saijo Inari makes this temple a rare example of the religions of ancient Japan. Every year about 3 million people visit this temple, where “Saijoi Kyo-o Daibosatsu,” believed responsible for prosperity in business and good harvests, is worshipped.

4K 初詣 2020 最上稲荷 岡山 New Year’s visit to a Saijo Inari shrine in Okayama
It is customary for Japanese to visit a shrine at the beginning of the year to pray for the happiness of a year.

Welcome to Saijou Inari Shrine
Em and Sumako-chan give a light tour of Saijou Inari Shrine in Ibara, containing the largest Torii gates in the world, bonzai azaleas, and the chanting of the monks in session. This vid was for a Performance Studies class, using religion as a cultural performance.
The audio is all the actual chanting of the monks while we were there. COOL!

Why I love Japanese Goshuin
Goshuin [御朱印] are really cool stamps you can find at many temples and shrines in Japan. They are usually collected in a Goshuincho book [御朱印帳]. Here's why I love them.
To see all of the pages, here is a video of me flipping through:

Also, I'm at a new filming location, so the video and audio quality should be better starting now.

Okayama Shrines and Temples: Omoto Shrine (Goshuin Adventures)
The first of our Okayama Shrines and Temples (Goshuin Adventures). Today we went to Omoto Shrine. It is a fairly decent sized shrine in Okayama City and also holds the honor of being the starting point of Goshinko.
Goshinko is a 1 kilometer march to Okayama Castle and Korakuen Park. People dress in old period costumes, blow conch shell horns, and do dances. It happens on the 1st Sunday of April. Check it out!

How to Get a Goshuin Stamp at a Temple or Shrine in Japan
A goshuincho is a small notebook used specifically for temple and shrine visits. When you visit a shrine or a temple you can get a stamp and calligraphy text for that specific place for a small fee. In this short video, we show you how to get a stamp for your goshuincho.

Japan Travel | My Best Wishes for You 2020 | First Visit to Shinto Shrine in New Year
I visited Saijo Inari (最上稲荷) in Okayama, Japan and made my wish for your happiness and joy for the New Year.
The sound of the big bell has had healing effects on me.
Hatsumōde (初詣, hatsumōde) is the first Shinto shrine (or Buddhist temple) visit of the Japanese New Year. Shinto and Buddhism are often amalgamated as seen in Saijo Inari.
Enjoy.

▼What is Okayama Korakuen?
In 1687, Ikeda Tsunamasa, daimyo (feudal lord) ordered his vassal Tsuda Nagatada to begin construction of Okayama Korakuen. It was completed in 1700, and it has retained its original appearance from the Edo Period up to the present day, except for a few changes by various daimyo. Korakuen is one of the few Daimyo gardens in the provinces where historical change can be observed, thanks to the many Edo Period paintings and Ikeda Family records and documents left behind.
