Retiring in Thailand, Interview with Bernard 'Buck' O'Brien at Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2019

Semi-retired in Phuket, but originally from the outback of Australia, Bernard 'Buck' O'Brien sat down with Steven Howard of TravelNewsAsia.com on Saturday 20 July 2019 to talk to him about the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2019, his love for Thailand, and why he has chosen to retire there.

In this interview, filmed at the Cape Panwa Hotel, Buck shares his thoughts on this year's Phuket Raceweek, the type of boat he is racing, and how many crew he is sailing with.

Buck tells us about his experience of sailing in Thailand, what sailors can expect and which areas of the country he recommends people to visit.

Steven asks what made him to choose Thailand for retirement, what it is about the country that appeals to him, which Thai food he loves the most, and Buck shares some tips for those considering moving to Thailand.

Cape Sienna hotel in Kamala Beach, Phuket, Thailand. Hotel seems more quiet than it actually is because it has been shot at times when there are no people. And may is out of more crowded seadon. Very nice hotel. And Kamala is awesome place.

2014 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, pt1

This year's Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek saw entrants from 26 countries racing in seven classes off Phuket's east coast. Bill Bremner, skipper of the racing class winner Foxy Lady VI, talks to Phuket Today about taking on - and winning - his first Phuket Raceweek.

Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2015

Despite some challenging wind conditions, this year's Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek ended with a great many happy sailors, content that they had raced their best despite the weather.

46 yachts took part in the four days of racing and over 500 participants enjoyed fun, food and drink at the regatta village spread across the beachfront lawns of Cape Panwa Hotel.

It was also a great week for local sailing star, Ging Buranrom, who co-skippered his crew aboard Sansiri Windstar to their first Cruising Class victory.

John Newnham's Twin Sharks won the Firefly 850 one design class, while it was Alan Carwadine's Asia Catamarans Hurricane, that took the trophy for the Racing Cat class.

The Corsair Pulse 600's were the standout one-design class at this year's Raceweek. Sailing their first regatta, these sprightly trimarans put on some of Raceweek's most exciting racing, with Andrew DeBruin and Zam Bevan's SuDu 1 victorious, winning their final race by just 3 seconds.

IRC 2 saw some hot competition between Fujin, Foo 4 and Jessandra II, but it was Roland Dane's Corby 36 that eventually took the class.

IRC Racing 1 was more or less a one-design match race between the two big TP 52s, with Peter Ahern's Oi! holding off Ben Copley's Kodo for the win.

In the Charter/bareboat class, Ian Lodewitz and Keith O'Donnell's crew aboard Venture managed to hold off Philip Grove's Uhuru.

And that wrapped up Raceweek for another year, but just before the final night's party kicked off at the Cape Panwa Hotel, organizer Byron Jones had some big news...
