Goodbye Paradise ???? Hello Blue Lagoon! || Sailing from Rarotonga to Aitutaki
It's hard to say goodbye to Rarotonga, but the Worlds Most Beautiful Lagoon awaits. It's just an overnight sail to Aitutaki & we'll be enjoying the Bora Bora of the Cook Islands.

After some seriously amazing experiences in Rarotonga we're finally picking up the anchor and sailing away from this little slice of paradise. All the locals told us we needed to point our catamaran north, to experience Aitutaki.

Remote Island Life on Aitutaki, Cook Islands || COUCHSAILORS Sailing Journal #18
This week we learned the in's and out's of living the remote island life. They say that cruising is really just doing boat projects in beautiful places and that sure is the truth. While trying to hunt down outboard engine parts, we got to see how Aitutaki's 2000 inhabitants supply their island, from apples to SUVs, and even witnessed a WHALE SHOW right from our cockpit!
Enjoy!

COUCHSAILORS:
We are a couple sailing around the world. We saved up, bought a Beneteau 423 sailboat and said goodbye to life behind a desk in corporate America. We've sailed the coast of California, explored the Sea of Cortez, crossed the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia, hopped the islands of Tonga and Fiji to New Zealand. The ultimate goal? A complete world circumnavigation! We hope to inspire you to jump off your couch and start your own adventure, too!

Aitutaki, Cook Islands, 2018
Catching up on my editing.
From sailing last year (2018). A difficult edit this one with the passing of Bob.
Surprise stop in Aitutaki Vlog 81
After a hair raising exit from the pass in Maupiti we finally left French Polynesia headed for Palmerston Atoll. Two days into our passage we realised the beautiful Cook Island, Aitutaki was not far off our course so we decided to divert and explore what Aitutaki had to offer. Even though it was tricky to find a sandy spot to anchor outside the reef (the passage into the lagoon is only 1.5m deep, our boat is 2m draft so no way were we attempting that) once settled we were free to explore the wonders of Aituitaki - famous for having one of the largest and most beautiful lagoons in the world! We were not disappointed, not only is Aitutaki stunningly beautiful it also has strong links with NZ meaning we could finally buy some of our favourite foods - pies, sausage rolls, jelly tip ice cream and Whittakers chocolate just to name a few! We were also treated to nightly visits from whales in our anchorage and had the most amazing dive directly below our boat - incredible! This unexpected stop turned out to be one of the Pacific's highlights for the Nikau crew.
We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau.
We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day!
We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand.
We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures!
We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have?
Thanks and enjoy.
This is Our Meditation || Sailing Cook Islands
We have BIG plans for adventures in Aitutaki but the strong winds are saying Relax, enjoy the calm side of this tiny island paradise!

This is Aitutaki, the honeymooners island, the Bora Bora of Cook Islands and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from sailing, it’s to go with the flow. We wanted to paddle on the SUP, hike to the highest peak, snorkel and SCUBA the pass. But with 30 knots of wind blowing our plans had to change.
That's when we decided we should do a little island meditation.

Strong winds and a letter of warning in the Cook Islands
Our feelings about the Cook Islands are a bit torn.
Aitutaki was beautiful! So was Rarotonga, but because of all the bureaucracy we did not see much and basically just wanted to sail away from that port as fast as possible. We even got a letter of warning, since we did not send an email before we arrived..
It is not always easy to sail around the world (all sailors do not have internet onboard).
We hope you will enjoy it!

TRAVEL to AITUTAKI, Cook Islands - Welcome to Paradise (Vlog Part 2)
After an amazing few days hanging out in Rarotonga (check out our first episode) it was time to explore another part of the Cook Islands, and a spot that is known for having the most beautiful lagoon in the world, Aitutaki.
We jumped on an Aitutaki day tour from Rarotonga, flying across to the island and spending a few hours on a boat cruise, drinking coconuts, snorkelling with fish and wandering around One Foot Island, home to the bluest water we have ever seen.
For the last few days checking out the best things to do in the Cook Islands, we checked out the Highland Paradise Cultural Show, went snorkelling at Black Rock and tackled the legendary Raemaru Trek right before getting on our plane home.
Travelling to Cook Islands is a fantastic experience, and our trip was one of our favourites in recent years. We can't wait to return again one day.
Aitutaki Day Tour price is NZ$ 493 per person
Highland Paradise Tour price is NZ$ 110 per person
Disclaimer - We travelled to the Cook Islands as part of a media campaign with Cook Islands Tourism, and our flights were covered by Air New Zealand.

Aitutaki to Vavau
This was mostly a boisterous sail with high winds and big swells.
Approximately 500 nm we set sail from Aitutaki where we had anchored outside of the reef. Strong winds prevailed for the first part of the passage and I did my bit running the SSB net.Tony on 'Checkmate' and Lynne and Terry on 'Resolve', two of our close cruising buddies weren't too fay away.
