St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, First church erected for the Polish immigrants of Pittsburgh
On a beautiful sunny afternoon in June, 2012, I had the opportunity to document the outside of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, which was the first parish erected for Polish immigrants to the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
As the Polish people are so devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is fitting that the parish was erected on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption.
The interior of the Church is visible in this video through the vestibule glass demonstrating classic Catholic art elements; the raised preaching pulpit, the beautiful statuary, along with the gorgeous baldacchino (canopy) which serves as protection and honor over the tabernacle of the High Altar, where Jesus Christ is present, body, blood, soul and divinity.
There can be no doublt that this church was erected to say that Tridentine Latin Mass and the three Latin inscriptions in the church interior reinforce the truths of our religion which the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass demonstrate in action:
On the front of old main altar:
Se Nascens Deditsocium By his birth He offers himself as a companion
On the altar canopy:
Se Moriens In Praetium Dying, he offers himself as victim.
On the window over the altar canopy:
Se Regnans Dat In Praemium Reigning, He offers himself as a reward.
On the Christ the King center window above the crown, in Christ's hand is a banner which reads:
Qui Vicerit Dabei Sedere, Mecum In Throno Meo He who has conquered will grant you to sit with me on my throne
Saint Stanislaus Kostka's architectural style is a blend of Romanesque and Baroque, with Byzantine influences. Construction of the present Saint Stanislaus Kostka church was started in April of 1891. On July 31st, 1892, this church was consecrated to the greater glory of God. A.M.D.G.
The church is a one story brick edifice covering an area of 8,337 square feet. The church is built on the ground surface, and there is no basement. The walls are from 17 to 21 inches thick. The church measures 67 feet wide and 105 feet deep and stands 150 feet high. In 1936 the church endured flood and explosion damage.
In the twin towers are seven bells. The right tower holds the St. Michel bell -2,500 Ibs., the St. Barbara bell 1,200 Ibs. and the St. Anthony bell-750 Ibs. The left tower holds the St. Casimer bell -1,800 Ibs., the St. Joseph bell -1,000 Ibs., the St. Rosa bell -750 Ibs. and the St. Stanislaus bell -550 Ibs. Five bells were electrified in 1956.
The church was designed by Frederick C. Sauer. While at Technical School in Wittenberg, Germany he worked as a stone cutter, brick layer arid carpenter. After graduation in 1879 he came to Pittsburgh at the age of 19. Sauer closely followed the desires of the Pastor, Holy Ghost Father, the Reverend Anthony Jaworski, C. S. Sp. and gave the Polish immigrants a church reminiscent of their native land and where they could feel at home. Sauer also designed Saint Stephen, Hazelwood; Saint Mary Magdalen, Homestead; Saint Mary of the Mount, Mount Washington; Saint Joseph, North Side; Saint Nicholas, Troy Hill; Saint Coleman, Turtle Creek. Sauer was also architect for the Latimer School on the Northside and the fantastic hillside colony of homes off of Center Street in Aspinwall.
The stained glass figure windows were produced in Munich, Germany, at the Royal Bavarian Art Institute at a cost of $27,672 -a major expenditure for that time. Compared with today's dollar value it would cost almost $538,000. According to experts, the windows in the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church are some of the best period Munich style stained glass in the United States.
Munich Style Stained Glass were produced in the Royal Bavarian Stained Glass Manufactory, Munich, in the mid-19th century. This glassworks was established by King Ludwig I in 1827, and continued to produce glass of high quality well into the early 20th century, under the guidance of F.X. Zettler. Together with his major' competitor, Franz Mayer of the Royal Art Institute, these stained-glass artists developed the so-called Munich style of expert painting on relatively large glass panels (as opposed to the medieval technique of smaller pieces of colored glass held in a leaded framework, later adapted and modified by the great American designer L.C. Tiffany). Around 1862 the Franz Mayer of Munich company started with stained glass paintings influenced by Royal Bavarian Stained Glass Establishment. Their tendency was to create a picture like composition similar to late gothic paintings and renaissance altars. The paintings were detailed. The style by Mayer and Zettler became known as Munich Style and went back to the traditional roots. Small colored glass pieces were coated with overlay color, tracing lines and melting colors before being fired and leaded. The work by Peter Hemel v. Andlau or Hans Holbein the Elder set the standard for Mayer and Zettler and became the base of their work.
St Anthony's Nose 1928 Easton - Forks township Pa
Some people climb onto a rock structure that is known as Saint Anthony's Nose just along the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River, about 5 miles North of Easton, in Forks Township. Route 611 is still a dirt road here. The home-movie film was very rough, but still well enough to see the view. Enjoy!

These are the histories of five of them: a church with ties to the Underground Railroad; a church built by the hands of factory workers; a church that joined the fight for civil rights; a small congregation refusing to give up; and a church known for its glorious music.

The Hauntings At Gen. Anthony Wayne's Tomb and Blockhouse
Come with us as we Explore The Hauntings At Gen. Anthony Wayne's Tomb and Blockhouse in Erie, Pa Paranormal Pursuit. The place where Gen. Anthony Wayne's Flesh is kept in his tomb. His body was boiled and bones transported per his sons request but his flesh remains at this location.
Gen. Anthony Wayne suffered a serious gout attack. There were no physicians at the fort so calls for doctors were rushed to Pittsburgh and the Army hospitals. As his health worsened he developed intense stomach pains. Unfortunately, the doctors only arrived on the same day as his death, December 15, 1796. He was buried in a plain coffin, his initials and date of death driven into the wood using round-headed brass tacks, at the foot of the blockhouse's flagstaff on garrison hill.
Twelve years later, Isaac, Gen. Wayne's son, rode to Erie in a small, two-wheeled carriage called a sulky. His sister, Peggy, had begged him to bring their father's remains back to be buried in the family plot at St. David's Church, Radnor, PA. Isaac met Dr. John Wallace. He was the same physician from Pittsburgh who had been called to the dying Wayne's side.
When Dr Wallace opened Wayne's coffin, he found Wayne's corpse almost perfectly preserved. It was the consistency of chalk & only one leg was decayed. But Isaac had only space to bring his father's bones in his horse-drawn sulky.
Dr. Wallace used a custom common to American Indians to solve the dilemma. He dismembered the body and boiled it in a large iron kettle until the flesh dropped off. He cleaned the bones and packed them into Isaac's boxes. The task was so distasteful that Dr. Wallace threw the remaining flesh and his instruments back into the coffin and closed the grave.
In 1853, the abandoned blockhouse was burned down and the land around it leveled. The gravesite was lost until 1878. The coffin lid with the brass tacks, remnants of clothing and the dissection instruments were recovered. These items are on display at the Erie county historical society. The rest was reburied in a reconstructed Wayne's Blockhouse monument located on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home.
