St. Kuriakose Elias, Mannanam Churh and Pilgrim Centre, Kottayam
Mar Kuriakose Elias Chavara is a Syrian Catholic saint and social reformer from the Indian state of Kerala. He is the first canonised male saint of Indian origin and belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church of the Saint Thomas Christian community founded by St. Thomas the Apostle in the first century. He was the co-founder and first Prior General of the first congregation for men in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, now known as the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (C.M.I.), and of a similar one for women, the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (C.M.C.).

The church is an important pilgrimage center for followers of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara. The church was commissioned by him on May 11, 1831 and completed in 1837. It was subsequently renovated in 1955 and 1996. The church compound also houses the residential unit used by the saint. In 2014, when Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was canonized as a saint, 60000 people attended the thanksgiving mass at the church complex which was celebrated by 100 priests.

St. Kuriakose also started the first printing press in Kottayam in the church complex in 1846. The printing press was used to bring out the first Malayalam daily Nasrani Deepika. When St. Kuriakose died in 1871, he was buried at St. Philomina's Church, Koonammavu. His mortal remains were later transferred to the St. Joseph Church in 1889.

Mannanam was the first house of the CMI Congregation (Mother House) of which the foundation stone was laid on 11 May 1831 by Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, Fr. Thomas Palackal and Fr. Thomas Porukkara.
Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10th february 1805 in Kainakary. After Seminary Education he was ordained priest in 1829 November29 at Arthunkal St. Andrew’s Church. Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara the first Indian who took vows in 1855 at Mannanam and start the first Indegenous Congregation in India (CMI) and became the First Prior General of that congregation. In 1855 ten other priests also made their first vows before him. Mannanam was not merely the birthplace of the indigenous religious congregation it was also the birth place of many other firsts: the first indigenous seminary of the Malabar Church (1833), the first Catholic Sanskrit School in Kerala (1846), the first Catholic Printing Press in Kerala (1846)

Blessed Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara is closely associated with the foundation of the first indigenous Religious Congregation of India in the year 1831.
On 8 December 1855, the religious community at Mannanam was recognised canonically with the profession of vows of eleven priests headed by Father Chavara, the first prior of the congregation. The original name of the group was the Congregation of the Servants of Mary Immaculate of Mount Carmel. In 1860, this congregation was affiliated to the Carmelite Order and its members began to use the postnominal initials of T.O.C.D. (Third Order of Discalced Carmelites).
